I bought a J45 standard this year. Within the first few weeks I change the nut, saddle and bridge pins to bone. The pins are unslotted and I had the bridge slotted. Installed EJ17 strings on it. Also took out the stock pickup and installed a K&K Pure Mini so the under saddle is gone for a better saddle to bridge sound transfer for straight acoustic. Guitar became very responsive. Easy to dig in for the bass.

I swap out stuff all the times, particularly tuning machines and bridge pegs. I have had nuts changed as well. Almost always for upgrades rather tha aesthetics, but not always. I changed some silver to gold tuners on my Taylor.

I bought the Sheryl Crow model SJ aback in 2015. It has an Adirondack top , Waverly OB tuners and a slightly different bracing of the top. Great sound and playability . The price was great too as I gather they weren’t selling well - not sure why though. They had an option for a (very) high price pickup used by SC which I passed on for a KK pickup.

Those are great guitars! Tried searching for one a while back and they're hard to find now, didn't know they ever had issues selling when new.
@rzh34432 жыл бұрын
@@acousticmusicnthings Yes it is. Also, they used a teardrop pick guard so that wasn't an issue.The Adirondack top has no discernible headroom limit, but some think it is better suited for pick only. The saddle is an open (slide through?) style ( not sure why?) . Also the braces are all finely scalloped. I enjoy your reviews !

@@rzh3443 thank you! I have a couple with that open saddle slot and I'm not much of a fan. Other than that I think you're SJ sounds about perfect. I might pick one up if I've comes along. Although it's almost time to start rotating out some guitars haha.

Yes Amazing SJ!!! I Just commented on another one of your videos.. (AJ vs J45 custom, vs SJ) and I mentioned my love for my AJ.. but I think I'd rather have a SJ or Hummingbird.. This video is exactly why!! Man I really love a Gibson Round Shoulder, Mahogany back and sides acoustic!! Long story short lol.. I'm a Gibson guy 100% and I prefer Mahogany over Rosewood. Lol Man you're a lucky guy!! Such a beautiful and Beautiful sounding SJ!! The only thing I've done to my AJ is I ordered some new Bone Bridge Pins and on 2 of the pins I have my Initials.. lol.. M.P. I'd really love to have a SJ!! 🤘

i’d like to do the exact same things to my SJ how hard was it to get the pickguard off and did it really buff out fully? also did those golden age slide right in place of the grover’s ? thanks
@acousticmusicnthings9 ай бұрын
The Picard came off quite easily with a hairdryer and some naphtha/ lighter fluid. very easy. And I did it while my guitar was new so there wasn’t much to buff out. The tuners were an exact drop and replacement and also very easy to do.

I have a D28cw with the Hutt ugly dalmatian pick guard. I would love to change but over years have become a stickler to keep guitars original. Now in the marker for a J45 or an SJ. Like you I don't like the big pick guard. I really wish they would sell this guitar without a pick guard. Thank you for your helpful video.
@AV-lt3vp Жыл бұрын
When you swapped out the tuners did the new ones just drop in or did you need to drill new holes? Im loving my SJ original but the tuners keep bugging me because they’re not period correct. If it was an easy swap could you give a link to the tuners you installed. Thanks.

Golden age replica tuners. Super easy and no holes. Gotoh makes nicer ones. Look for the screw down post style.

Good morning from Lowell. I got mine in 2021, too. Just love it. I would really like to see how you changed the pick guard. Did you get yours from the good folks in Ft. Wayne?
@acousticmusicnthings2 жыл бұрын
I sure did get it from Sweetwater! I used naptha and a plastic scraper and just slowly worked it off. Then used a micro fiber cloth and my thumb to rub off the extra adhesive. Took maybe 15 minutes. Lots of videos and instructions on how to do it. Just take your time. Post a video of it if you haven't!

@acousticmusicnthings2 жыл бұрын
Maybe a little bit, when I had no Picard on it all I could feel a little bit more vibration from the top. But not an absolute huge tone difference, nothing that anybody would actually notice just listening in the room. Yet there was a little bit.
