We need more public service announcements like this. Literally an ounce of prevention would have meant the world to so many people. I don't recall any warnings in health class, or from music directors, or at concerts, or at locations of any other loud activities. Hearing is critical to our health, but it's only after we lose it that we realize the impact.

Thanks for helping to get the word out, Dr. Cliff. The older men in my family (father, uncle, grandfathers) all had shooting and hunting-related hearing loss and wore hearing aids. I have read that one gunshot up close can do measurable damage to your hearing. The older you will thank the younger you for avoiding noise-related hearing loss!

At. 69 years of age and for at least ten years I have been suffering from moderate to severe HF loss as well as a severe lack of volume! Growing up in the 60’s we all loved to listen to loud rock bands like Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix etc etc and we also attended various festivals but sadly this has taken its toll on my Hearing! Your advice about earplugs is very valuable and I think warnings should be mandatory at all concerts and perhaps earplugs could be sold at some of them?? Great video and glad you were able to complete your service in the army!

About two years ago, I had a hearing test. I found that I have noise induced bilateral hearing loss. This was my first test since I was in grade school. I had a feeling that I would have some hearing loss as growing up in a household where everything was always loud, talking, television, radio because my dad is deaf in his left ear (had his ear drum removed due to a tumor when he was young). Although I cannot blame it all on my upbringing because I also never wore hearing protection at concerts either. Now, if I go to a concert, I have to wear hearing protection, if I don't I cannot hear for at least 3 days. I really wish that getting a hearing test was part of the recommended health maintenance appointments. I get messages saying that I need my flu shot or that I need a mammogram but nothing that says I need a hearing test. Why can't we make this more mainstream? I think it's really important and maybe hearing should be checked every 5 years?!?! I don't think that is too much to ask.

I have bilateral hearing loss also and tinnitus. They said mine was noise induced, but I think they actually think mine was from a virus because my right ear is so much worse than my left. My hair cells are damaged on the inside. I had Covid in 2021 and 2022 and had a bad virus also, had tinnitus both times with Covid just ringing and it went away. I woke up one morning and had pressure on my face by my ears. Made an appointment for ENT. That test was from 250-8,000 and it was good. My tinnitus was so bad it was buzzing-static electricity it is debilitating. They referred me to tinnitus clinic and they did a higher frequency test and the test from250-20,000. My left ear was at 16k and right ear was ultra high frequency showed no reason now to sound. My audiologist said, she thinks it was caused by a virus because my right ear was so much worse than my left ear. And with the ultra high frequency I believe that why my tinnitus is so loud in ears and head buzzing-static electricity. It’s so debilitating.

Thank you for the video Dr Cliff. I too was turned down by the military due to hearing loss caused by loud noise . The Vietnam war was still being fought at the time , I thought they could use me , the Sargent seemed happy but not the Dr on account of my hearing . Just prior to that , So as a young bloke (17) I got a job on a rock breaking gang in outback Australia . We jackhammered 8hrs a day and there was no hearing protection for us . Today and it`s still not good my hearing chart drops away about 1K both sides . By 2K my right levels a bit at 85 db and the left 95 db. I`ve been using aids for about 25 years . Now here`s a point ! Unhooking a Covid -19 facemask I lost a hearing aid . Didn`t feel it or hear it , or notice it till night time , to late ,it was miles away . I`ve also noticed the left pulls out changing eyeglasses or removing a motorcycle helmet . So it may be worth cautioning your clients how easy it is to lose a device . Another point I`ve often wondered about is the relationship between the side with most loss and the cause . You mentioned shooting . With a rifle pulled to your right shoulder your right ear would be closest to the percussion . I`m also right handed but used to lean on the jackhammer or lift it with my left arm to a wall and control the trigger with my right hand . This put the exhaust close to my left ear , my worst side for loss. I`d like to know your thoughts ?

Doc, I just came across your video, and I wish there were more of this type. I, like you am a veteran, although I served in 1973-1977. missed the war but loved to shoot and did from the time I was 8. I am also a life long big game hunter carpenter always aware of noise and hearing protection. When I left the Army there was some hearing loss, but I lived with it, and got used to it. About 40, I started to get tinnitus, first in the right then the left ear. The VA put me in aids, and I refused to wear them the sound quality, but oddly enough, not the aids, was awful. 2 years ago I was prepping to go on an Elk hunt in Wyoming, and I went to the range to shoot and secure the sighting in of my rifle. I forgot my usual muffs, and put in the foam plugs that are in every hardware store in America. 2 Shots from the guy on my right, and 3 shots from the guy on my left. 4 from my own 30-06. I am now for all intends and purposes deaf now and it only took 10 min.'s and 9 shots. I destroyed a lifetime of ear care in 10 min.'s. The stigma of ear muffs goes away quick when you can't hear your wife and kids tell you that they love you, and they don't have to yell it to the whole neighborhood. for crying out loud!!! take care or your ears!!! Nothing has changed me as deeply as hearing loss. By the by, the military saved my sorry butt, and I at 67 still have no regrets having served and appreciate all it gave and did for me.

Hi, Doc. I was in the Marine Corps from 1964 to 1968. I was stationed for a year in the 2nd Tank Battalion at Camp LeJeune. Often several of the M-48 and M-60 tanks would head to the firing range, and there my ears were treated to the massive blasts of around 20 tank cannons, and all without the benefit of ear protection. The Corps back in those days did not require or recommend ear protection. During my 4 year enlistment I was exposed to tank cannon fire, M-14 rifle noise during training missions and at the rifle range, grenade blasts, the deafening sound from firing recoilless rockets, and from firing the M-60 machine gun. Now, at the age of 73, the VA has fitted my for hearing aids, and my tinnitus is so severe that I must take Seroquel and Zoloft to curb my suicidal ideation. The ringing is so severe that I am often driven to the limits of sanity. I soon will apply to the VA for a service related disability. I'm glad that the military has awoken to the absolute necessity of ear protection.

I just got my first pair of hearing aids from the VA last week on Monday. I’ve had tinnitus for 50 years after shooting a 30 caliber rifle with the old style cup over the ears in advanced training. The high frequency ringing comes and goes so I never did anything about it while in the service or after as most of the time I could just ignore it. Over the past few years it has gotten worse and so has my ability to hear some family members (mostly the women). I can hear my wife but not my daughter and granddaughters. So I had a hearing exam at Sam’s then another one at the ENT and both results matched. I went to the VA and they tested my hearing and had a different result (about 15% better across the board). They didn’t record the tinnitus as I said but claimed it has gotten worse over the last few weeks! The hearing loss rating was a zero because of that instead of the 10% I was expecting. They issued a new set of resound 3D which are better but did not fit the right ear properly. Nor did they do the test you suggested to get them fit and function properly. I’ve made another appointment to see if they can adjust them properly. The price is great as they are free but if it hurts my right ear I don’t know how long I can wear them. Hearing my daughter for the first time in years has helped! Is their anything I can do to get them to properly fit these to my ears and complete the programming properly? Additionally, they didn’t explain how to clean them. Just turn the off by opening the battery door and put them into the box overnight. I am going to assume my follow up maintenance appointment will be better. Thank you for your service !

Hello Dr. Cliff, does the noice reduction in hearing aids act as a hearing protection?
@dukebeach1

Heart-breaking outcome for that young man. In reference to noise induced hearing loss caused by gun fire, I want to add that not only, and obviously, not wearing hearing pro can lead to permanent damage, but also you have to watch out for a more insidious issue of having inadequate hearing pro for the system you are working with. My NIHL on the right side was a result of shooting a friends AR-10 that, unbeknownst to me, had a muzzle brake installed, instead of the standard flash hider. I had electronic ear muffs on at the time, but a muzzle brake can increase the aural blast from a rifle as much as 50%, but they did not protect me. I knew after the first shot that something was wrong. Too late. Life changed. I tell all my friends who are recreational shooters/hunters this; don't go to the the range or on a hunt with the hearing protection you need for what YOU are shooting. Protect your ears to the loudest POTENTIAL blast from any system that could be used there by other people. If your range allows up to 50 BMG, then you should protect your ears to that level. I haven't been to the range since because I want to see if any of the neurons will heal a bit more in the 4-6 month window. I realize the outer hair cells are toast. They are broken forever, but maybe some neuron connectivity could reduce the perceived loudness of my tinnitus. When I do go back to the range/hunting, I will be using in-ear custom, fully occluding molds, along with 33 dB rated earmuffs. I know, too little, too late in regards to my damage, but certainly don't want to take out the hearing hair cells I have left. All shooters should spend the money to get THE BEST hearing protection they can find. Don't skimp on this step. You will be sorry. Thanks again for all the information you provide. Really glad I stumbled on your channel. Fantastic content.

I suspect some of my hearing loss was Military related. As a military photographer, I spent a lot of time on the flightline and in and around airplanes of all types. But since I wasn't ASSIGNED to the flightline, I was never given or even required to wear hearing protection. I was young and dumb and I was going to live forever! I might still live forever, but it will be with hearing aids.

Hi there, I have a question. My recent audiogram showed my right ear at 40 until 3k when it jumped to 30, and then took a dip back to 40 at 4k and shot up to 20 at 5k & 6k, would this be indicative of noise induced? I don't listen to anything loudly, and the last time I was at a place with loud music was about 7 or 8 years ago, whereas my problems have only been in the last 3 years at most (my left ear was more or less the same but there was no dip, it was 40 until 1k, went up to 30 until 4k, and then for 5k & 6k it was 20).

Dr. Cliff I do hope that guy pursued a waiver. From your descriptions his hearing loss doesn’t seem as bad as it could be compared to many infantryman and especially artillerymen I know. In fact his hearing probably isn’t as bad as mine, it was something I was born with, but yet I was still able to become an infantry officer regardless. I have two questions; the first being how do you think warfighters from the last century were able to to sustain functional hearing in the midst of much longer and more extreme exposures to combat compared to what we have today? I know weapons have gotten louder as propellants have changed and that exposures today are often in enclosed spaces rather than open air environments as found in the past. But..... what are you thoughts? Secondly; do you think hearing loss reversal technologies(such as FX-322 and others) will be the effective in the future, not only for warfighters but also those born with high frequency deficits?

Same here. I have problems with my right ear since I was a kid. They said it's because my ear canal is small. Doc, can you say something about ear canal affecting my hearing?
@DrCliffAuD

If you have an obstruction in your ear canal or an ear canal that is collapsed, it can give you a conductive hearing loss.

One of the stigma of wearing hearing protection is that you can't hear with them in. This can be dangerous. The new active technology is great, but back in the day we had cotton balls, maybe, or a couple of cigarette filters. And once you have hearing loss, wearing protection makes you effectively deaf. So, it's easily preventable in retrospect and now, but not so much then.

I have a 4000hz hearing loss due to a wax ear protector falling out of my left ear while in Army ROTC on the rifle range. I had a complete loss of hearing for 1 hour after the incident.

One single shot without hearing protection is definitely enough. I got my tinnitus from 1 9mm shot without protection. Guess one problem is Hollywood. Movies give the false impression that even big explosions don‘t have any impact on your hearing.

Absolutely. Imagine firing a pistol from inside a car! This is shown sometimes as no big deal by Hollywood. I'm sure it would cause significant instant hearing loss.

You can say that for Dragon Ball Z. Lol. Shouldn’t all characters have hearing loss?
