Great explanation! Thank you! My daughter has this hearing loss but her’s is in the severe range. It’s caused by a high frequency ventilator she was on shortly after birth.

Excellent presentation. Very passionate, but also very clear. The only question I had was when you said that noise induced hearing loss occurs because the shape of our ear which gives us the natural ability to hear high pitched sounds works against us. I was waiting for the explanation of how/why this happens and it never came (or I didn’t hear it). Thanks so much for the video. You have a new subscriber.

overtones in music have functionally infinite harmonics over the fundamental frequency. while the fundamental frequency of middle C on a piano may be 250Hz overtones in the harmonic series extend over it up to (and past) 20,000Hz

Brilliant presentation as always - however generally its always too late, people realise this after the damage has been done - 20/20 vision is always better with hindsight. Unless you have a time machine.

Glen I think Dr V is talking here about hearing protection which is pretty much adopted in most Western countries in the form of PPE. If you work in a metal press shop the constant clang of metal on metal is going to cause, over time, hearing loss. If however you wear ear protection your hearing is likely to be protected. We can all work towards preventing NIHL.

I unfortunately have almost that exact diagram of hearing loss in my left ear only, I joined the army four years ago now and before joining I had perfect hearing I can’t believe that much damage has been done in such a short space of time. And i’m only 31 thank god for now I have my right ear with perfect hearing and life left upto 2k in perfect hearing I will never let myself be exposed to loud noise again and hope I can hold unto whats left of my hearing. To be honest even with such a big notch in my left ear I can’t pick up any noticeable hearing loss

My hearing loss is the same (in both ears). They call it a cookie bite hearing loss. I thought the fact that it was the same I. Both ears meant it was genetic. Based on this presentation, it looks like it is noise induced.

Good talk but your information is a bit off. As the sound level increases by 3dB the time drops to half. You stated every 5dB the time drops to half.

Wear your earplugs, with muffs over the top. It's worth it. I didn't, and I've suffered the consequences. I can hear very low, I can hear very high still. The middle is mud. Heavy equipment, and rock and roll music has left my hearing in the middle range dead when there is background noise. No noise, I hear fine. Anything background like traffic or a party, or anything that's just incoherent noise in that range and I'm effectively deaf. All I hear is bork smarm glark gibble smak. It's just pure gibberish to me. Oddly enough, I never have trouble understanding people on the phone. That's an isolated track so it's just fine.

Dear Dr. Does this audiogram represent a loud impulse noise such as a firearm report? I am researching and trying to find out if gunfire affects the lower and midrange frequencies with acute exposure. I'm talking 15-30 gunshots from small arms.

is this immediately noticable?? I did not care about my hearing for years, listened to a lot of loud music through earbuds, and mixed music really loudly. I can hear fine now, will I suffer later if I stopped now??
@gardevoirdude74932 жыл бұрын
it's pretty difficult not to expose yourself further in everyday life and hair cells will begin to die overtime as you age. It's really hard to tell how bad it may be (or if it will be bad at all) because so many factors play into it. I wouldn't worry about it past protecting your ears from now on. Nothing you can do about it now, and most of us will lose our hearing as we age

I hear a ringing and a hum, please help
@5oClockShadows4 жыл бұрын
@Galderik Galderik honestly I don't know, loud music for the tinnitus probably, but the hum I hear is a mystery. Sometimes the hum seems to disappear for a while but not for very long. along with the hum is a odd intermittent sound like blowing into a half full bottle. maybe I am wrong but I think tinnitus doesn't hum so what is it I am hearing?
@5oClockShadows4 жыл бұрын
@Galderik Galderik several years, maybe 10 or more, I'm kinda used to it so I can almost forget its there. left ear is half deaf and does all the ringing. many years ago I used to use q-tips to clean in the ears, bad idea in hindsight. was pretty deaf in the left ear for a year or so, clogged up with wax the q-tip had pushed in. I can hear out of it now but at half volume like its plugged up still.
@5oClockShadows4 жыл бұрын
@Galderik Galderik didn't have any tests done since it was almost immediate, it felt good cleaning deep in the ear but one day it was a bad idea. went camping and a gun shot report seemed to 'pop' that ear back into life like magic though its still kinda muffled. I really wanted to know what the hum is, is it external or internal? I swear I have noticed the absence of the hum as well and that's just weird since I hear it all the time.
@5oClockShadows4 жыл бұрын
@Galderik Galderik I heard the tinnitus can be cured, I would like that so a test is probably the right thing to do next. The q-tip probably instructs to not use it like I did, I had done so for years till that one time and it was instantly clogged up. it didn't hurt, just very quiet for a year or so in one ear.
@5oClockShadows4 жыл бұрын
@Galderik Galderik left ear is at half volume since it popped back on at the camping trip, its much better than nothing. been that way for 20 years i guess. I didnt break the ear drum so loud music, ya I still listen to loud music sometimes, not often tho.
