So relate to this. Wedding photographers start with the passion of capturing life, love, genuine moments. Burn out and physical limitations are real. Also realizing capturing those moments for others and putting your life second for those moments (which is completely satisfying and fulfilling) can absolutely cause a full stop burnout. Balancing your own life and capturing others is hard! Thank you for sharing your story. It’s nice to relate, no matter how different our end results may be. Find your spark and light up the world!

Mitch, you were fortunate to have had a Dad who actually expected you to do some hard work, some real life work. That's probably the real key to your success. Construction demands reality. You can't fake anything out very long and get away with it. I've been to several film schools. However, I noticed from the last major workshop I was in, Global Cinematography Institute, my commercial fishing experiences & pipeline welding background enabled me to direct in way which blew everyone's mind, including my own. So, I appreciate the fact that you shared 12 hour work days with us. The only difference between yours and mine, were the locations and styles. Otherwise, I'm certain pretty much the same. 😎😎

As my own father used to say, 1 percent inspiration 99 percent perspiration. Hard work actually helps develop talent and skill, which results in more inspiration. It’s a virtuous cycle, as the business gurus like to say. P.S. I have hired hundreds of people over a long career, and one thing I learned is you can’t teach work ethic. It’s in someone’s DNA or it isn’t.

Its so great to hear someone elses story that is so similar to my own. I am also a creative, started with the skateboarding, then music (learnt drums ad bass guitar along with piano), then discovered editing. Went to film school, started shooting weddings, had my own (much smaller) business but unlike you I didnt trust anyone else to help and I did it all myself. Then, BURN OUT. Got really sick with Lyme disease, had to stop filming for a few years, and now im in real estate and shooting my own videos. Just discovered your account and looking forward to diving in!

Wow... what a ride Mitch, I've been watching you for some time and I admire you, it's so cool to hear a bit of your journey and how you got here, so sweet mentioning your Mentor and how you wanna be like him ☺ and trust me you are in the right path, I have learned a lot from you, love what you do and how nice you are! I think the video turned out way better than just an ''epic video quitting my job and being successful'' kind of thing, it was honest and raw, I'm glad you didn't shy away from what you loved and I hope you don't shy away from this new project in mind either. Looking forward for what's coming!

What a powerful story. This proves even more your passion for photo and video, for creating and teaching. You walked away from guaranteed dollars to creative freedom and expression. You’re the type of person that will always be successful in whatever you choose to do in life. Very inspirational Mitch! Thanks for sharing!

Very organic story. Sometimes we forget the hard and consistent work people put in to get where they are. Living a simple, authentic and balanced life is most important to me. I've spent my time all over the place learning different crafts and starting all kinds of creative endeavours. Focus and consistent work ethics is very much the missing element for me, yet I learned things along the way you cannot learn when you're constantly busy. So I'm very thankful for those learnings. Appreciate your video!

Great story Mitch. So many little similarities to my own story currently. Grew up playing music in bands, started using a camera for a clothing business and learning photo/video and now growing my own wedding film and photo company. KZbin has always been in the back of my mind as well. I love the tech side of things. Definitely inspiring. Looking forward to continuing watching your journey mate!

I started photography about three years ago and finally decided to start turning it into a career.

Thanks for sharing your journey with us and also keeping it super real. I'm always interested to learn how creatives got to where they are, the difficult decisions you had to make, etc. Personally, I have a day job in tech and probably won't prioritize photography as my number 1 in the near future, but I've definitely thought about it as a side hustle. I've helped friends do behind the scenes for short films or food photography, and it's something everyone should experience at least once.

Brave decision to step away from your successful business (I guess two if you count your dad's) not many do it so fair play to you. If you like the buzz of a wedding day it really is a blast but the downside is it's super unsociable and can become this unstoppable train. Follow your heart is the only way man. Best of luck👏

Great story Mitch! Been following you and the lads for awhile now. I've been working professionally since March so I'm still learning loads every gig I'm doing, one thing I'm improving on is remaining calm when I get a big job, as I'm a bit of a people pleaser, sometimes I forget that I'm actually the knowledgeable person in the room, and to remain calm and not be afraid to make creatively critical decisions in the moment. Thanks for this video as it helps to give a transparent perspective from behind the scenes.

Love your story Mitch. Only got one question. Does every photographers/videographers career absolutely has to travel trough weddings?
@MitchLally
@MitchLally 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely not. However shooting weddings teaches you almost every style of photography: portraits, couples, product photography, live event photography, night/flash photography even automotive photography if you have clients who love cars (I'm thinking of certain cultures here :) ) - so it's a very popular avenue. It also pays really well and is mainly weekend work so it doesn't interfere with a regular 9-5 job. For all these reasons I highly recommend trying it for a year or two for most people getting into the industry as it's a great proving ground even if you want to eventually move onto other things. It teaches you to handle stress and to think on your feet. After 10 years of shooting weddings NOTHING stresses me out anymore :)

@@MitchLally "NOTHING stresses me out anymore," HA, HA, HA. Very funny, but I'm certain true. I've shot a few as gratis, but never for money. However, the last one was nerve racking because someone kept getting in front of the camera right at the most critical moment of all, when the couple says, "I do." After that, I said, I've had enough of weddings. A couple begged me afterwards to shoot one for them because they knew I had film school background. I said NO! That was it. So your comments about stress & weddings. Right on, brother, right on. 😎😎

Gr8 that you have been successful in this area. As i am finding not so easy to get a reputation. I am going the other way, used YT to learn photography and videography and do believe after many years i am fairly good. But my issue is getting work in the wedding industry. Customers are very reluctant to try an unknown, would rather pay big bucks than take a risk on a new wntry to the industry. I am pretty cheap (as i have a day job) but it doesn't seem to result in bookings. Any suggestions would be appreciated by watches. Cheers. 🙏🙏🙏
