You could use a hybrid inverter for your solar panels, these type of inverters can control if the power goes to a battery or return to the grid and you could even control when you want those things to happen
@Beeeeeeeeeee
@Beeeeeeeeeee Жыл бұрын
Yep, microinverters are really only good if you have a lot of random shade. Else it's just added failure points and they also have a crappy pfc. Which uses extra battery power when offgrid. Those microinverters sit under the panel in the baking sun all their life. Not ideal.
@kolterlarsen4731
@kolterlarsen4731 Жыл бұрын
You could add an AC coupled/grid forming inverter+storage like the Outback Mojave system between grid and micro inverters so you can make your own ac grid and still harvest solar when the grid is gone

10:10 Just in case you didn't know, there are inverters that can can actually produce AND consume power from AC to recharge a battery in what (I think) is called an 'island grid'. The Victron Multiplus for instance can do this, but I'm sure there are other systems that can, too, maybe even one from Ecoflow?. What this effectively lets you do is keep the microinverters for the grid-tie setup. If you were to transfer power to batteries, the inverter can supply the necessary AC waveform the grid-tie microinverters need to push power out from the panels, and the main battery inverter can take that energy (if its not already being consumed by another load) and push it into the batteries. This may be an better setup for you, since you can keep the grid-tie system without loosing the ability to have those same panels charge a battery.

@JerryRigEverything if you put the enphase back feed breaker in the new generator panel you hooked up they will sense the 240 volts off the eco flow in order to stay on. Just be mindful it not back feeding to the grid. Or maybe take 1 string and feed into the generator panel Main reason for the shut off and a delayed start up is you cannot be back feeding incase it’s a down wire and the utility is already stressed enough when power turns back on last thing it needs is all the solar systems kicking on and putting more load on the infrastructure.

Having a way to switch from grid solar to off grid solar would be relatively easy to do in theory. In practice though, it would probably be much harder than it's worth as you'd be constantly switching voltages since power into the grid is often different than household power from the grid... It's clear I don't have a clue what I am talking about, but even I can tell it'd be more sensible to just make another solar array.
@halflifeheroes6471
@halflifeheroes6471 Жыл бұрын
The problem comes when you have micro-inverters attached to each panel. They are amazing for grid-tie systems and make wiring a breeze, but they will not function if the grid-tie inverter goes offline. You'd have to disconnect each panel from the micro-inverters, connect them in series/parallel to optimize voltage/amperage that the battery system can handle, and then connect them to the batteries. Is it possible? In most cases absolutely with some small adapters to make it easier and non-permanent, but like mentioned in the video it would probably only be logical in an apocalyptic event where you aren't going to switch back and forth frequently. With how many panels he has on his roof that is probably a couple hours each and every time he needs to switch (if fully prepared).

Get yourself a real grid switch (an automatic one) and put that between the grid and the panel, when the grid falls away the switch automatic switches to the other input (gen/ups) or put the eco flows in between the incoming grid and the panel, so even when the grid fails everything stays up ;)

I have a similar setup (Only one of those Delta Pros for now...adding a second in spring.) but I didn't want to use a transfer switch for my house as it ties me into specific circuits I need to use. Instead I have Interlock panel. A bit more manual but it works, is cheaper, and doesn't take up any space, and allows me to pick and choose what circuits I want to turn on. I upgraded from a 1970's 20 slot 100A panel to a Leviton 42 slot 200A panel which takes up a crap ton of space. While I was upgrading I had them run a 60A line to the garage for the eventual EV I'll get. Expensive electrical work but worth it.

I'm surprised you didn't use the Ecoflow Smart Panel - automatic backup instead of this manual system. I'm in the same boat, but just have 2 Ecoflow Delta Pros to run backup manually for my house and cannot use my 2 solar arrays of power when doing so. I'm holding out for 2-3 more years to then get a house battery backup, somewhere around 20kWh and 12-20kW output with automatic backup. Tesla Powerwalls are a bit too expensive still.

I'd be strongly tempted to take the panels over the porch and connect those to the solar inputs on the Ecoflows. You'd still have most of your GT system to sell back to the utility, but you'd also have "free" power to help keep the batteries topped off. You'd just need a pair of DC breakers and a pair of cutoff switches if you need/want to take the batteries off-site.

Solar plus batteries is a game changer. Our setup allows small scale use of the solar and batteries in a power cut, though I know we could have had something added in at install to allow full off grid use. For the price we just couldn’t justify it given we rarely get power cuts in the UK.
