You will realise one day, that n47 is a lot easier to pull out, than having to work on it inside the bonnet space. I normally unbolt box, disconnect exhaust, then drop car down, stick axle stand under the box, disconnect water pipes, boost hoses, take ecu out and leave it on top of engine with the wiring loom and pull out. Normally takes me around 1.2 hrs to pull it.

Depends what job you’re doing, for a timing chain job you’re right. Cylinder head job I prefer to do it on the car.

@@W15Garage cylinder head job involves doing the timing chain.
@W15Garage Жыл бұрын
@@nikog7133 not necessarily, if the timing chain was recently done, I’m not changing it again just because the head needs to come off

I’m about to do the chain on my F11 520d, would you recommend engine removal or gearbox removal and leave engine in? Thanks
@W15Garage Жыл бұрын
If it’s automatic I would remove the engine.If it’s manual and you have access to a proper car lift, I like to do it on the car. Easy access to clean the timing cover/oil pan surface, engine is fixed-you can torque the bolts easily, coolant, a/c remains untouched etc. Only the steering rack needs to be lowered. But Many people prefer engine out in any cases. Good luck with the job, if possible use OEM timing chains, you won’t regret it!

@@W15Garage legend thanks, it’s an auto unfortunately, 307,000miles on original engine and no history of chain! Looks like I’ll take the engine out then. I was going to assess the rod bearings as well. Thanks for the help!
@W15Garage Жыл бұрын
@@davog1946 good idea! On my x3 3.0d the rod bearings looked like new at 241000km but the main bearings took the punishment, specifically cup no 7 almost spun. New Kolbenschmidt bearings and new bolts sorted the problem.👍

I would recommend to remove the engine, as sump has to come off to do the job properly, a lot easier to pull it out rather than messing about resealing the sump from underneath the car.

Junk engines with plastic timing chains.At least the M47 had some metal.

M47 is a good engine 100%

N47 is a really good engine to tune, use and work on, problem with these is that people dont service them regulary and this is what causes chain issues, even though chain is at the back, its still a doddle to do.
