That’s weird. I grew up in a gun toting house, and we were taught never to point any sort of gun-real or imaginary-at any living thing. Yes, even our toy guns, or sticks or whatever. Mom would say, “You never even point guns in the direction of anything you don’t intend to kill.” And “Run before Gun.” And things like that. We treated them more like your Jedi lightsabers and you had to prove yourself responsible and worthy before you could even have a fake one. No joke.

I came to the comments to see if anyone else had already commented about it but DANG does she have a lot in this 😅
A lot of people are commenting that they played "guns," "war," etc as kids and that it's a perfectly fine game to play, and I agree. My brother and I had pretend battles and played with toy guns and swords and all kinds of things as children also. But there's a difference between "playing war with your friends who also want to play war" and "violently intruding on other children's peaceful games and making it about murder and death which then makes everyone else uncomfortable." So I'm definitely with Ily and the Sheriff on this one. 😛

This got me thinking of how I wanted the job of being a camp counselor at my old summer camp. It was a Christian summer camp where we talked about god at times, but it was fun. It’s split up into four programs, ranging from the youngest kids, to the oldest teenagers, so if I were to be a camp counselor there it could teach me whether or not I’m better with kids or teenagers around my age. I went there in the two oldest programs, and after I was done I thought ‘maybe I should give it a try’ but COVID hit and the camp was canceled. If I were to get the chance again, I would try to have a job here just for one summer just so I can get the feel for it

Fun fact about my days in elementary school: One time, my dad was into call of duty and lil ol' me watched him play it whenever I would see him. So one day at school I pretended to shoot a gun that wasnt life-like, so one of the teachers caught me doing it a recess. And this teacher was mad, she grabbed me by the arm and said "we are going to the principal" in a rude manner. We arrive in the principal's office and the principal, was not a nice principal. He was so mad he called my grandmother and told her that I was playing pretend guns, even tho to me it was not a graphic way, it didnt make anyone cry, or even hurt anyone. So my grandmother gets mad at them and takes me home early. So that's what happened in elementary school. Also, illymations, please dont send me to timeout

Teachers are legally not allowed to put their hands on students.
@undefinederror404043 жыл бұрын
@@tomuria3857 Pretty sure it's legal for a teacher to just put a hand on your shoulder, and even though grabbing a child by their arm and dragging them to the principal is definitely bad behaviour from an adult it isn't something they should get too much trouble over. If the kid is bruised that may be another story, but sometimes I was glad my teacher in middle school dragged a kid out of the classroom because some kids are just so hard to deal with. It's sad for the kid, because it's usually their parents fault that they are hard to deal with, but if my teacher had gotten crap for doing that we would've had a lot more fights in our classroom.

"It's just pretend" If the mother understood anything about the human brain and human development, she probably wouldn't say that. But also, if the child was pretending to do something else, she would probably be freaking out. What in the heckity? When I was a 3rd grader, I played pretend with two other 3rd graders and pretend guns were involved. (I think it was some sort of a duel situation?) We all got told not to do it even though that is arguably less problematic than what the kid in the video was doing, and no parent got involved. Is this an usa thing again?
@spooki3333 жыл бұрын
depends on how someone is playing w guns and how it makes the kids around them feel like when i was younger i'd have little "gun fights" w my friends but if it was like i would bother other children and run around "shooting" them or their things down and they were to start crying or complaining then ig its different
@bonsoir51703 жыл бұрын
Probably. The fact that the usa are such a large country means that they never take drastic measures. They fight back and forth and that's it. I honestly think if the states had stayed divided, they might have learned faster cuz anti gun states would ban them, pro gun states would let them be, some catastrophe happens and then they'd ban guns.
@HelloHamburger3 жыл бұрын
@@bonsoir5170 I think that united or divided the states would have a difficult time deciding how to deal with guns. Lives are literally involved with guns. The risk is very large so decisions surrounding it are very serious and take a lot of thought.
@S2MiaS23 жыл бұрын
Well, their country DOES have a school shooting situation for a few decades now... And even in my country (actual guns are illegal, we don't have much war talk) when kids would play pretend with villains and heroes like in action movies it was okay. A kid pretending to shoot every toy and trying to add guns in every play... Isn't a kid others will play with often (had some classmates like that on kindergarten. Tag had to be war, hide and seek had shooting noises and he wanted to either be It or defend himself from the It with a gun). You need to check if the kid has some anger issues or is being exposed to too much violence. Best case scenario the kid is doing mostly fine but is bad in socializing, so they may need some new ideas and a talking to.
@engstromfam3 жыл бұрын
First it depends on the parents, if they let there kid watch lots of stuff with guns and stuff the kid will probably think that guns are ok so they will want to play guns . Second the parent in the video is a Karen and is probably ENCOURAGING her son to play guns. Third everybody has had an obsession at one point, this kid is probably really likes guns right now. Fourth it's not a USA thing anyone, anywhere could be obsessed with guns, but it might be more common in the US depending on how many parents have guns.

@jello14172 жыл бұрын
@@thegrandnil764 I think it's not necessarily about the gun izself, but about the age of the child. Older kids can already distinguish between good or bad, what's okay and what's not. When they shoot somebody in a game they know it's okay because it's just a virtual person, not a real person, but in this case, tge child was so young that it wouldn't have understood these things

@@tubbs2132 Okay, good point. Who made those studies, or are you referring to a specific one? Also, I think another key difference worth mentioning is that the child knew it wasn't supposed to do that but still did it. I know, that's not the point of your comment, just something that i wanted to add. I just think that a child of his age might not be old enough to yet understand the consequences of firearms. Otherwise, games DO strengthen ones ability to learn what you are supposed to do and what not. Also, I think we should also consider the bad parenting here, since it's hardly the childs fault. That last story reminds me of when I worked in daycare. We had this kid, we'll call him Kevin, and Kevin one day decided that he didn't want to share any of the toys. Kevin would walk up to another kid, take whatever toy they were playing with, play with it for like a minute, then abandon it to go steal a toy from another kid. I put him into timeout for not sharing, and after he got out, everything was fine. Or, so we thought. Kevin's mom comes in to pick him up at the end of the day, and she found out her precious angel was put into timeout. She then goes on a rampage, yelling at all the teachers because how dare we discipline her child, and only she is allowed to do so. From then on, Kevin wasn't allowed to be put into time out, for fear of his mother's wrath.

This reminded me a lot of conversations I've had with my therapist. She works a bit with adolescents and teens, and she's made her own unofficial "DSM" for some of the issues she sees in the kids she treats, because 9 times out of 10 those issues are that their parents are crap. Things like "VPM" for "Vicarious Pageant Mom," "DSD" for "Daughter-Shaming Dad," "EPE" for "Expected Parenting to be Easy," to name a few. She actually used to work with kids as young as you describe, but she had to stop because she couldn't handle dealing with their parents. It broke her heart to know what a kid needed to be happy but have the parents take no time or effort to do their part, and it was affecting her quality of care so she moved to working with adults and teens. It's really sad.
