Mr. Long, you are a colorful character and I say that respectfully. At 59 years old I finally decided to get serious about playing my bass. Must be because I'm a 2X prostate cancer survivor and I'm still here during this global pandemic. I will be tuning in often with you. Your Bass and color is killer Boss and to top it all off your a killer Bass player. Peace and Blessings.

Best advise on Pot & Slap I’ve heard. I don’t play that type of music so never really needed it, but wanted to learn. I could not get it. No one ever corrected me that I didn’t have to somehow hit the string with my thumb up against the fret board. The way you taught it makes sense and I can do it. It’s a little harder with a MM Stingray-5 because of the tight string spacing, but I’ll work on it. Thanks.

Now Bro. Johnny Lee, please show us how you set up your bass strings and action thoroughly. How low can you go?
@hype8764 жыл бұрын
I would like a video on setting low action as well. I have an idea of how to do it myself but I am afraid I might pop my neck turning the trus rod.
@angweirdo76044 жыл бұрын
hype876 you can never pop a neck, you can only worn out the truss rod nut
@hype8764 жыл бұрын
ANG WEIRDO and the rod is basically what keeps the neck connected to the body ?
@angweirdo76044 жыл бұрын
hype876 nope, if you have a bolt-on bass then it’s the bolts that keeps the neck connected to the body.. don’t be scared adjusting the rod, I was scared too.. just adjust it little by little until you got the string height that you wanted.

Johnny you the man, clothes, basses, and personality and playin the hell out of Fender P thanks for the tips. I'm an old school classic hard rock player who is coming up to 60 years old and i figured it was time to start slapping. I love Sly and the Family Stone and i loved it when Larry who i think pretty much invented slapping, if i am correct. Lotta guys came after him. Larry said he got that when him and his guitar playing brother would play with him, just the 2 of them and he was making that sound to be percussive to fill in for drums with the bass sound.

The sound you're getting by playing around the 12:05 - 12:23 mark reminds me of the opening to the William Tell Overture (aka The Lone Ranger Theme Song).

I've been told the callus thing before as well. Someone told me that when I play more my hands will get stronger and my finger tips will start to callus. But overtime I noticed thats just depending on how the player plays as well as the gauge of string that they may use.
@emmanuelobiozor20364 жыл бұрын
@@bassist718 Shoot, guitar strings are thinner than bass strings and those gave me callus (on my fretting hand) as soon as I started playing consistently, I can only imagine bass strings!

Very good video that gives an intuitive feel for integrating set up (low) attack (easy, light, smooth) and exercise of movement. Already able to put these together quite easy with your approach being one with the instrument. Kind of like easy talking back and forth with the bass/hands/head becoming one smooth, easy communication- hard to explain, but you showed it here. Thanks!

Hi Mr. Long, just finished watching your video , thumping & popping ,well done sir. If you've ever watched the late Willie Dixon , Joe Zinkan , they slap the finger board of the upright bass & some how as time moved forward, thumping became slapping , which is totally incorrect, Larry & Louis thump the bass. When you have time sir, youtube ( whispering / Joe Zinkan ) it shows the two are different ,he slaps the finger board. Blessings Sir.
