I always think about how Ace is always hyping up his brother to other people, yet when he fights with Blackbeard, Blackbeard had no idea that Luffy was Ace’s brother. It kind of shows how withdrawn Teach was from the Whitebeard pirates, only focused on his true goal, that he never bothered to learn anything about his crew mates, not even his division commander.

I feel like one common take i see about marineford is that people feel like Luffy's scar would be more impactful if he got it from aces sacrifice rather than jimbe. Ive seen everyone from random youtube commenters to people reacting to the arc make this comment and personally i find that take completely misses the point of Luffy's scar, at least to me. To me Luffy's scar is the physical embodiment of what Jimbe told him. A physical symbol and reminder of this event and how much it impacted luffy but not because of the person he lost but because of the friend he gained in Jimbe. The man who risked his life to save luffy much in the same way as ace but who is still here to support him to this day. Luffy's scar is a direct symbol tying him to both the loss of ace AND the gaining of Jimbe

it's so hard finding good commentary on One Piece. I feel like a lot of channels in KZbin just don't "get" One Piece in such a deep way, so finding this channel is so nice. Drawk and Mama Drawk make such good commentary, along with that English professor guy. But someone please teach Mama Drawk how to pronounce Haki properly, it's killing me. I find Sabo's introduction so funny. You get Ace's death, and then Oda immediately goes "there's another one", that we are supposed to believe is dead 5 minutes after being introduced. Don't know if Oda meant for it to be obvious that he isn't dead. Seeing Luffy cry is heartbreaking, though. The guy who is always the cheerful one breaking down always breaks my heart. I love the political commentary on how capitalism is bad for everyone, even the rich, as it cages you. Kinda shares the same theory as the patriarchy, where even if you are a guy, patriarchy is still bad for you, as it forces you to fit a certain mold. I've watched your commentary from Impel Down forward, and I can't wait to hear the commentary on the next arcs! I'm still on Punk Hazard, so I do have some catching up to do.

One of the things that I love MOST about One Piece is Oda's approach to crying and to showing emotions that aren't just anger, especially for men. I LOVE that he really shows that young boys tend to pressure themselves into not crying, and then shows that the ADULTS, the mentors, the people who the kids should take as models, are absolutely crying and not seeing it as a shameful thing. I really love that, it is such an important message to carry in a story for young teens (especially boys). And I love that he never brushes those scenes away, he spends TIME on them, shows the process of crying, the ugliness of crying, and the relief of crying. He portrays the reason, the action and the aftermath, and it is SO important. I absolutely love that, and I hope that this message is hammered again and again, to all the young and old minds reading this story.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but the existence of a third brother never surprised me that much because growing up in China the second I saw the ceremonial cups for the ritual I just assumed it was a reference to the oath of the peach garden in Romance of the Three Kingdoms (one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature). It's a famous scene that starts the novel with three men taking an oath of fraternity and swearing to die on the same day even if they were not born on the same day. (Spoiler alert: they do not die on the same day) The sworn brothers are all talented fighters and they bonded over their shared desire to protect their empire from rebels. The imagery is super similar too because the oath of the peach garden is also often depicted as three cups on a tree stump. It's one of those fictional events that is probably known by everyone in China and is referenced by people all the time. If you look into the story and relationships between the brothers there are also some interesting parallels with luffy, ace, and sabo. Definitely worth an analysis I think!

@thedrawkshow8 ай бұрын
But as I see it, I think that's because of Haki. To me, Haki being willpower and those with a strong will being stronger aren't separate aspects, but this also isn't to downplay the thematic weight. Oda chose to make the power system in the series be will embodied because that's his perspective on success, so it's what One Piece is built from from the ground up

There's something about political writing in One Piece that I haven’t seen anyone talking about yet. I have master's degree in international relations, I just need to talk about it. In the field of international relations there are Theories of International Relations, they are the lenses through which certain relations can be analyzed. But here’s the kicker, it’s just a perspective that you can use for everything, I’ve been analyzing media like that for fun for some time now and it allows to bring so much out of each work of fiction. There are dozens of those some recognize four as the main ones, some recognize three and not always the same in my uni there were three and one of them was constructivism, which is my favorite. Constructivism believes that the international relations are mostly created by ideas and ideologies, the international area is dynamic and every actor can change, it analyzes sociopolitical patterns and tires to understand them, which in my opinion is a core of One Piece’s political writing.

Pretty sure it was 7 months since the start of the series with Luffy first meeting Koby. So some of the Straw Hats have only been members for like 1-2 months if that once they get split up. So I 100% agree that it's super important to show how important Luffy's actions were to each and every Straw Hat member, and just how much that bond means to them.

4:00 that's called intuition. It has nothing to do with hairs, it's just that our brains sometimes understand something before our mind does. Our brain signals it in different ways, that's why it is associated with different stuff in different cultures. There's no "deeper" understanding because of hair and else. It would work either way if you are lucky enough for your brain to click it together.

About Moria disappearing he could've also switched places with his own shadow to teleport away. Just how avoided being killed by Robin in Thriller Bark when he was inside of Oars' body

1:08:45. Interesting that they’re describing A HxH Nen Power system. I don’t necessarily agree with how Haki is applicable since it’s a representation of a Person’s Will

I would honestly love the idea of Luffy thinking of Sanji based on his wanted poster.

Fun fact, I was watching the anime during the point of the flashback to their childhood and I honestly believed it was just a pointless filler arc, so I kinda just skipped over it. (to be fair I was also watch Naruto and Bleach at the time so such things came up often) . Needless to say when later events transpire my reaction was one of, "Who in the heck is that?! "

The idea of haki being will made manifest goes crazy: Conquerer's haki - the will to lead Armament haki - the will to fight Observation haki - the will to know Black blades - the will to cut Kuja arrows - the will to pierce Okama food - the will to nourish etc.

Also the coldness and heat powers some can use i believe them also to be related to haki. Sanjis flames and brooks coldness attacks.

I loved Mama Drawk's thoughts on the series as always. These videos are really great, but I'm not gonna lie, I kinda disagree with you guys' theory that the straw hats (besides Luffy) were using haki pre timeskip. I think the answer on why they continued to get stronger is simple: In the op world, the more you challenge yourself with strong opponents, the stronger you get. Zoro literally says something to this effect in the sea train. "Even if we don't realize it, we've all become stronger due to the challenges we've faced." I'm paraphrasing here, but that's basically what he means. Plus, I really feel like if they all had been awakening haki pre timeskip, then we would've seen signs of them developing it further post timeskip. But that's just not the case. Besides the monster trio, jinbei, Usopp in dressrossa and *MAYBE* Robin with her demon form, none of the other strawhats have shown signs of haki in 1100+ chapters. Which would be a weird move by Oda if he supposedly showed them having inklings of haki earlier in the story. So yeah, I think we're just supposed to take Zoro at his word in the sea train and there's no deeper meaning like every straw hat having early versions of haki, lol And I understand why you might think that there's more to this, since Oda can be a pretty cheeky writer who lives surprising his readers, but I can't recall any solid evidence that hints at the straw hats besides luffy having haki pre time skip. I think this is one of those we're suposed to take Oda st his word, which was expressed through Zoro in the sea train.
