This reminds me of a joke. Explaining the military branches to a civilian....not an original thing, I found it but sharing it here for all to read. The Army, Navy, and Marines are all brothers in a family. Army is the oldest and mom and dad made all their parenting mistakes with him. The Navy is the middle son, they're the explorers who left home and no one cared. The Marines are the youngest who mom and dad let do whatever they want and they still have an inferiority complex due to their small size. Well, mom and dad got divorced once all the boys were grown. Mom got remarried to a rich guy and quickly gave birth to a fourth son, the. Air Force, Now she loves him the most, showers him with the best toys, and buys him whatever he wants. When they go on vacation they fly first class, stay in 5 star hotels, and enjoy the finest meals. The Air Force is spoiled rotten and his three older brothers have bitter resentment toward him for this. Finally there's the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard is the rich step dad's son from his first marriage and none of the other brothers think or act like he's part of the family.

For those who aren’t sure what the Coast Guard does it a lot to explain Search and rescue is huge part. Law enforcement is also. The coast guard has also filled combat for the navy. Prior to the invasion of Iraq Coast Guard 110’ cutters provide protection for navy minesweepers clearing the way for the marines to land. Coast Guard TACLET was apart of combat operation in taking Iraqi oil terminals. Today Coast Guard RAID teams travel with army and marines to FOBs to inspect conex box to ensure everything is properly packed and ready for sea. In our past history the Coast Guard trained fought along side Central America law enforcement against drug cartels. For more about that read Not Your Fathers Coast Guard. During Vietnam the Coast Guard assisted riverine units stop Vietcong boats smuggling weapons and were responsible for load and unloading ammunition. There’s a lot the Coast Guard has done and still doing. As for the movie there has been several The Guardian was one. The one that is a true story is The Finest Hours. We all make fun of each other but not know what people isn’t much of an insult. Lol if you want make fun of uniforms you should have seen them before ODUs we looked like gas pump attendants. Your can also see our state of the art equipment hand me downs from the navy. Shit we got ships left over from WW2. You can also make fun of how we and clean ducks. Yes we are the red headed step child of the military. We are more like son of the second wife who doesn’t live with family but shows up when needed.

I'm an army vet too (2006-2011) and I gotta give some credit to the Coast Guard. I've heard a lot of shit talk about them, but I also heard recently that the coast guard found and rescued something like 98% of the people who were left trapped after a major hurricane (I think it was Katrina? I don't remember exactly which one). They legit do some good work when it comes to saving people in the water. I don't necessarily know if I'd want them by my side in a firefight, but if I'm shipwrecked in the ocean off the coast of Florida, I am gonna be damn grateful for 'em. I also just want to point out, Hooah is the dumbest word I have ever been forced to say.

@@LuxLazar ahah, im glad you replied! quick question. I was wondering if you could explain something strange that occurred that day. Just 20-30s after 1 boat came round the corner a lady walked up to us from behind and just started chatting to us, seemed like a quirky lady that just seen this sort of event happen a lot. Anyway, as she is talking to me and my mum and, to our amazement, she was able to perfectly time when the other boat and helicopter came. "In about 20 seconds another boat is going to come round and get another angle on your dad, just to see what he is doing and make sure it's not some sort of rocket launcher". 20 seconds later, on the dot, a boat came round as she described (formation etc). A few years after this happened the thought occurred that she wasn't just some lady and was, in fact, a sort of "ground team" just to get a better look and confirm that we were not trying to cause trouble. Is this a thing that the coast guard would/could do? She was asking questions like the ones you would hear from the airport security "why are you here? What do you do for a living? etc" and even escorted us back to the boat that brought us from Manhatten. Hope you can clear this up for me :)

Coast Guard is really cool they focus on more humanitarian and drug prevention missions. It's the one branch with a lot of prior military members and also the branch with the highest retention rate, it's much more relaxed with enlisted and officer. And the cool part is, is that even if your a cook you can be on a boarding swat team cause it's a small branch but more opportunities. They also have IMO the best snipers cause they shoot from helicopters to a moving boat really cool underrated branch

I am a Costie, I laughed a lot. Pretty much sums it up. The reason why we are a small branch and no one knows us is because our funds are small. Maybe because we are not in the D.O.D but the Department of homeland security. I never heard of the Coast Guard before I joined and I never seen advertisements. However we do a a lot search and rescue, migrant interdiction, drug interdiction, ice breakers, aids to navigations (Buoys), military readiness, water port security, and many more. I wish are funds can be better so we can be recognized a little more. No matter what I still like the Coast Guard. Great videos I like your videos - Seamen Garcia

Growing up around the Great Lakes, you learn alot about the coast gaurd, and are glad they're there. If you are on a boat, or a freighter, and it sinks, they will be there to save you, and won't stop looking for you. They are essentially the Police, Fire, and Medical of the waters surrounding the U.S., not to mention they are also the Second line of defense, right after the navy, when it comes to US waters. They are very important for the people that live in the US, especially by the Great Lakes, and the Ocean. (The Great Lakes are quite deadly during the Winter and Fall. And with out the CG, a lot of lives would be lost, because Ships tend to sink on Lake Superior waters during the late fall months, and early winter months (November/December))

Some days I wished I'd have taken another job and other days I loved what I did. The only thing they are known for is search and rescue. Other then that, they are the red headed step child nobody really wants to play with.
