My Thoughts on Death Battle's Sephiroth VS Vergil

After stating how Screwattack would approach this match out and how it would play out. I am here to share my thoughts on the video and my fears for my own personal interpretation of this popular match up.

The part where he said that they take all versions of a character and jam them into one body is so true. They should have given Vergil both amulets and Sparda's sword and see how well that turns out for Seph.

Yeah man hell they didn't even bother to give him the force edge and they didn't even show off his ability to move so fast that he is literally invisible shown in his 3rd fight against Dante in DMC3.

@@SpiderDante1437 english 100 lel, yeahif u pay attention to any "vergil gameplay" u should be able to see that yamato does turn blue whenever he is concentrated (u can see by the blue trails it leaves behind) hence he needs to "magic" it up in order to do the whole "space - time" cutting, if that not enough, then why was sparda able to close the FUKIN REALM of hell and earth with yamato (they even mentioned it in their death battle) and in Dmc 5 after the fight against his son, Nero, vegril did say "Then we will use the yamato to close the connection" meaning that yes yamato can slice through space and time whether it's in the blade or the blades magic, so supernova should be easy to through, hell he can even use it cut through the illusion he said in the fight "They're fake?" meaning that he did notice he was under an illusion

Yamato didn't cut dimensions despite DB saying it did. I mean, really? Illusions? It doesn't really matter since Vergil was cutting space, not just the target. The same thing with the Supernova. It doesn't matter what Sephiroth threw at Vergil, Yamato can just simply cut it out. They also made a point of Yamato not cutting Kalina An, a normal Rocket-launcher, desite the fact that Vergil wasn't even trying to cut Lady at all.

I know this is an old video, but what I find funny is how they said that Sephiroth’s healing ability is broken, but didn’t consider that Vergil’s is significantly stronger? Vergil lost in the fight by being cut in half, which was similar to his loss in DMC 3 where he got sliced through the waist… But wasn’t cut in half, because according to lore, the second an object that is damaging leaves his body, it immediately heals, and he can do that even when extremely exhausted, it happens on its own, So Vergil wouldn’t have died to that slash

Plot-wise he only had Force Edge for one fight against Dante after this fight Dante took it from him and make it his own Sword, in fact Force Edge is Dante's default weapon in Devil May Cry 1 (Rebellion didn't even exist in DMC1), so out of all the things wrong in this Death Battle this is actually accurate Vergil doesn't have Force Edge, heck plot-wise he shouldn't even possess Beowolf anymore because he lost it after his second fight against Dante in DMC3.

Amazing how Sephiroth keeps losing to Cloud, and Cloud isn't even one of the top 3 most overpowered characters throughout FF. Also something to consider is how in base form Sephiroth keeps getting crit by Cloud's omnislash indicating that his main durability isn't that high. Meaning Vergil's Judgement Cut should finish him off easily. Especially with how fast Vergil does it as well as being in Devil Trigger too.

While the fight itself was amazing and at least they made Vergil go down looking like a badass taking Supernova then unleashing Judgement Cut End to cancel it. It's extremely funny how they acknowledged attacks from Kingdom Hearts for Sephiroth's ability page but didn't even give Vergil the use of Force Edge even though they claimed he never wielded it once while showing a cutscene of the last fight between him and Dante with Vergil wielding Force Edge. Speaking of Kingdom Hearts, isn't that next match up a little one sided in Sephiroth's favor? I don't remember seeing this in a previous the people's questions episode but what happened to the originally planned Cloud vs Dante fight?

i know im late but vergils regeneration factor was something to behold aswell. it is said that when vergil was cut in half by dante in like half a second, a clean cut through the belly area, vergil already fully regenerated BEFORE the sword even went through the back. now comparing this with vergils demise through supernova by sephiroth in the DB, the burns vergil recieved would be for like a second (give or take, depends on the impact of supernova) and then gone like nothing happened.

Dante Agreed, it was fun to watch, but the spells they credited Sephiroth required an outside sources and a specialized requirements for him to use. They also didn't give Vergil the Force edge

With this fight, it was basically Sephy with Supernova > Vergil Sephy w/o Supernova < Vergil They really dug themselves into a hole so I could see why they were going to extreme lengths to give Sephy his Supernova win condition, but it was irresponsible of them to ignore the context of Vergil's weaknesses and just plain ignore some of his kit and abilities. Doesn't help that they also powerjerked a Supernova Sephy too.

I think where you succeed over ScrewAttack is definitely context. And that's something you do a great job with on all your videos. You really pick apart character feats and powers. Your Vergil vs Sephiroth video is still my favorite of yours. It was also my first video of yours. Great fun dude. But with you talking about 1-sided match ups, have there been match ups that you were really excited about and were really going to make a video over, but decided not to because of how 1-sided they would have been? A few of the match that come to mind that I had plans to do but decided to cancel because of how 1 sided they would be were 1.Leon vs. Wesker, 2.Chris Redfield Vs. Nemesis, I thought about doing 3.Liquid Snake vs The Boss another one that comes to mind is 4.Sabin (FF6) vs Zell (FF8) there many more like that fall in that department.

There's an argument to be made about the healing abilities. I do agree on the fact that when two characters can only heal 'actively' it's pointless to let them (aka two resident evil characters carrying herbs), however when one of the characters can heal passively (like vergil through DT), not giving the other his ability to heal, although not automatically, immediately puts the latter at a disadvantage. I apologize for the horrible English, as I'm no native speaker.

Thats a solid argument the problem with this is that Vergil in a fight like this would only use the Devil Trigger once to heal himself if he really need to and in my opinion would only use it to finish Sephiroth off not to simply stay in the fight long. Seph can use healing spells, Virgil is allowed to use his healing factor, it balances things out.

Threadnaught yeah...nah Skyward Sword and Breath Of the Wild Links share an ability that make them stronger then any other link. The ability Shield Counter. All link has to do is trust his shield forward and the attack would be reflected back. Even heat seeking missiles from time traveling robots became reprogrammed by his shield bash to heat seek the enemy. The few attacks that cant be reflected ( mainly explosions and Quakes) still get deflected which would essentially turn any fight whit those 2 links in to Kirito VS Heathcliff. Breath of the wild whit his new ability Witch Time ability that he stole fron bayonetta and Daruks protection force field will proof specially hard for anyone to beat.

+Threadnaught Actually, Ocarina Link is fairly middle-of-the-road as far as Link incarnations go, and is one of the few that outright lose to Cloud. Most iterations of the character are more powerful and can fight Cloud on even footing.

Screw Attack has said in at least one Death Battle Cast (I can't remember which one) that they basically use composite characters for their Death Battles. That can be VERY unfair for certain match ups, such as putting any Megaman against anyone since Classic Megaman and X have 100+ weapons at their disposal, not including other stuff like armors for X. Not to mention, Screw Attack seems to be selective sometimes with what character is composite and the breadth of stuff they get, for example Link vs Cloud. Link basically got most everything he's ever had up to the point the Death Battle was made, where Cloud got short sided in some ways like getting one of his worst weapons in FF7, the Buster Sword, over the Ultima Weapon which limits how many spells Cloud can have. Summons weren't allowed for that fight as they count as outside help, which I can understand depending on the Summon (makes you wonder why Megaman was allowed help from Rush n Megaman vs Astro Boy though).

I absolutely agree with your point of view. I like that you accurately and clearly defined which version of Seph-uhh... and Vergil you would take into consideration. The only reason why vergil was weak to illusions/mind control was that he nearly died fighting dante, so he was no where near his best when Mundus found him, which was a stupid move to charge at Mundus in the first place. First, I would like to point out that I have seen most of your Vs videos and have been around for a while now. Second, I would like to point out that I always disagree with SA on their decisions because even if sometimes they give the victory to my character of choosing, they leave out info crucial for one or both combatants and their reasons for victory often makes no sense. ScrewAttack are one of the worst analyzers out there. Now, to the point and I hope this comment does not get deleted because I want everyone that watches your videos to read this because I've noticed the same mistakes and trend going on in your Sephiroth Vs Vergil video. This is not me explaining why Sephiroth would win. It is me explaining why you are wrong in some of the things you say, concerning Sephiroth. I just want to clarify for you and the fans who watch you so they don't leave believing false info on Sephiroth. 1. Your first point is one I've addressed before, obviously it's gone ignored. You say that Sephiroth only has the ability to cast illusions in the whirlwind maze and are just for Cloud. This statement is *false.* Sephiroth, canonically, has all of Jenova's abilities and her abilities include illusions and taking the form of other beings. Never was it ever stated that Sephiroth needs to be in the whirlwind maze to cast any of these abilities, that is factually incorrect. Even Kadaj, one of Sephiroth's creations, does these abilities. Secondly, that he only does it for Cloud. False, Sephiroth takes the form of one of the party members and casts an illusion/knocks out the rest, in order to obtain the black materia. 2. Healing. Okay, I agree with you on this one, except for that regen is a form of healing. Both Sephiroth and Vergil have regen. The thing is, even if you slice Sephiroth's limbs off, they will regenerate or come back together. Can you say the same for Vergil? No, you cannot. 3. Sephiroth cannot use supernova without his safer form. Again, false. Supernova is just a variation of the power he gained form the black materia. Did he have to be in Safer form to summon meteor? No, he did not. This proves he can do so in any form. Also, Safer Sephiroth is not his strongest form. He literally only took this image because it is what he envisioned a god would look like. Base for Sephiroth already had all of these abilities. Lastly on this point, I will highlight this one, *Sephiroth does not need to be in the center of the planet in order to use mako as energy to perform this ability.* Sephiroth does not go to the center of the planet to gather mako energy, you have this completely wrong. *Tl;Dr:* I am not a screwattack fanboy, I have been around for 3TR videos in the past. 1. Sephiroth can cast illusions outside whirlwind maze just fine and not just on Cloud 2. regen is a healing ability, both Vergil and Sephiroth have it but Sephiroth can regenerate a severed head. 3. Sephiroth can cast supernova despite his physical form and he does not need to be in the center of the planet.

Kojiroe Idk where they are getting this info, to be honest. But the wiki states Safer Sephiroth is his most powerful form, which is false but also technically true. Here’s why: though Sephiroth did transform into Safer Sephiroth, he may very well have transformed into a rose and still be as powerful. But it’s also correct in context of gameplay. Safer Sephiroth is tougher than Bizarro Sephiroth. Basically, Sephiroth doesn’t need to transform into anything to be more powerful. That’s the gist of it.

I agree(except about healing in this case as that factors into both of their fighting styles) this had the opposite problem as Cloud vs Link for me where they took things like summons and defensive magic away from Cloud even though those are part of his expanded arsenal, not outside help. It's tricky with magic characters(FF characters in general), imagine Yuna vs anyone, she can summon, and use crazy healing/self-revival, switch classes and create something from nothing(the novella is canon) so she could technically summon/create a new Sin. FF characters have such a wide movepool and power levels jump massively.

I know this is an old video, but while i agree with the end results, SA left out a few things. Vergils healing factor is nothing to scoff at, being able to heal from being cut clean in half by Dante. Also, something no one mentions is Vergils ability to create a nearly, if not completely invulnerable force field. He does so in both tbr second and third fights with Dante

My very first impression of this video (within the first few seconds) was "oh lord a Virgil fanboy that just can't accept that he lost..." I had a whole thing typed up before even watching the video. Then I thought "I better just watch the video and see what this is first...." So I did. And I was actually pleasantly surprised with what you had to say and actually agreed with some of what you explained out. This actually makes me want to watch your video and see the detailed look at each character. I'm a huge FF7 fan (I certainty wouldn't say fanboy as I know the game has its issues and don't ever suggest there aren't issues here and there) and my favorite character is Sephiroth. That said I also love Devil May Cry and I like Virgil about as much as Dante. So for me seeing your video is going to be interesting and something I'm excited for. I must say, good on you for so respectful in your criticism. You really don't see much of that these days. And though I haven't watched through your VS battle, I did actually hear about it and it's outcome when a friend told me about it a few weeks ago. Frankly, I agree with you but for different reasons due to a lack of information about the characters. I don't know as much about Sephiroth as I should to make an educated justification for my reasoning, and I'll admit to being biased towards Vergil. But something I do every time I see ScrewAttack announce a DB I'm interested in is I look into the characters' fighting styles to try and see if I can guess the outcome. Entirely for fun I might add. Granted my research is VERY LIMITED, obviously I don't look into powers and abilities or spend anywhere near as much time as someone like you who does this often. But I had put my money on Vergil with his quick strikes and disorienting way of fighting overwhelming Sephiroth, who from what I've seen (again limited information) has more strength but much less speed than Vergil. I figured Vergil would've hit Sephiroth hard and fast enough to take him down before Sephiroth got a chance to land a strong enough blow to kill Vergil. Obviously I didn't look deep enough into Sephiroth, but like I said, I make my predictions based of small bits of info, entirely for fun. I'll be sure to give your video a watch to see your reasoning later, it is certainly very long.

I don't think you understand that Sephiroth, post-merging with Jenova, literally can't die. He can never really be killed, just knocked down. He returns to the lifestream, and comes back. That's what happened in Advent Children, and it will happen again. He implies this before he vanishes, and Dirge of Cerberus implies Vincent will eventually have to deal with him again, as Vincent is immortal too (and directly responsible for Spehiroth even existing, but that's another thing entirely). If Vergil can heal, Sephiroth should have access to his healing abilities too. And that wasn't the only time Sephiroth used his illusions. Screwattack did get one thing wrong, and that was saying Sephiroth was controlling Jenova, Jenova was controlling Sephiroth, what you see as Sephiroth in FFVII is not actually him, it's an illusion created by Jenova. Same with Advent Children. The three brothers were basically tangible clones, created for the sole purpose of giving Sephiroth physical form again. You are seriously lowballing base Sephiroth's abilities. Canonically, he's more Jenova than Sephiroth in FFVII. Sephiroth doesn't need the black materia to use Supernova, either. He needs it to cast meteor. Safer Sephiroth is just another Jenova illusion. At no time in the events of FFVII beside the flashback to Niebelheim, did Sephiroth have a damageable physical form. Vergil is extremely powerful, but he is, for whatever plot armor reasons, not as strong as Dante. Dante may have had more of a chance, solely by virtue of being a loose canon fighter with more tricks up his sleeve. The only other character that stands a chance, factually, against Sephiroth, is Alucard from Helling Ultimate, and even then, Sephiroth would be killed temporarily, then eventually come back. "I will never be a memory."

I understand your stance and opinion about the recent Screw Attack video. However, There is one argument I believe you failed to ponder properly. You said that Sephiroth can not use supernova in his human form. However, in 'canon' FF7, you never fight his human form. Not once, nor do you even see any serious combat of his in any way. You have a flashback where he is in the party, but he is still his normal SOLDIER 1st class before being thrust into the lifestream. So there is no telling what he can do since this event transpired and he obtained veritable godhood. During the last boss battles of FF7, you fight Jenova Absolute, Bizarro Sephiroth, and then Safer/Savior Sephiroth. After that you get the special one hit 'fight' but that does not count in my opinion. There is not a single instance in the game where you can get even the slightest inkling of his capabilities after absorbing the very life blood of the planet. The only way to get any sense of his combat skills, experience, prowess, etc. is to go into the expanded lore of things like Dissida, Advent Children and Crisis Core, where they finally show some of his abilities and powers. Side note: The only reason why anyone survived Super Nova was because of game mechanics. In most RPGs there is no such thing as a guaranteed party wipe attack that is not scripted.

Vergil would have had the upper hand. Hands down. Not so say Sephy can hold his own, but not for this long. Hyun's Dojo did this quite good with a lit outcome: Vergil would have taken Sephy out like taking out the trash. Sephy would have not have been strong enough to pull a Supernova. And even if Sephy got through the Devil Trigger you got Vergil's Nero Angelo. RIP run for Sephy, that would have been Vergil's failsafe (if he ever did need it).

There are some issues with your points however. Your first point, you make the claim he can only make illusions in the whirlwind maze, which COULD be true but we have no evidence to back that up one way or the other. Your second point is he should not have been allowed his healing magic which normally I would think is a fair point but against a character that regenerates almost instantly I have to say I don't mind it to much. Third point that is the difference between your videos and Screw Attack's, if you watch Superman vs Goku 2 they state and I quote; "We are looking at these characters at their maximum potential, not from some random point in their timelines." (Some might argue this point but I feel like they do that with every video unless they state otherwise.) That means they HAVE to count Supernova because at his max Sephiroth can use Supernova. They don't animate Sephiroth in his Safer form because honestly its ugly and would be less entertaining to watch.

Everything presented here is false. The fact is Sephiroth can heal to say he can't to make it "fair" is dumb. He also did not get the black materia so he could cast supernova. He used it to call a comet to injury the planet. To say he can't cast it in base form is because of this is wrong. Also just because he only used illusions in that one instant doesn't mean he can't use it under other conditions or that those conditions allowed him to use it. All this personal opinion and doesn't seem like much research was done. Also Screw Attack states before every match that they analyze their armor and abilities to see who would win, not make them as even as possible so it's a fair fight...

(spoiler warning for actual SA fight) the scene where Vergil puts all of his energy into using one last Iaijutsu to get out of the supernova is one of my favorite scenes animated. It might have lead to his death, but I honestly felt like that feat was worth a small victory in of itself

Ok i know it's a few months past i agree cause i thought to myself if Sephiroth can use super nova in his base form then why did screw attack deny the fact vergil's judgment cut has a more powerful variation where i would argue in my opinion that vergil can dash out of the dimension with super judgment cut to avoid super nova. Or he could with good timing create the purple sphere like in DMC3 final fight against dante to protect himself and shatter the illusion while in devil trigger and finish Sephiroth off. That's my thoughts i love the videos i'm a new subscriber keep up the good work!

Ace sephiroth isn't solar system level people need to stop over rating supernova....supernova does not really destroy a solar system as you are saying cloud and crew are all way above solar system level durability and endurance since they can each take multiple supernovas and keep fighting sephiroth. It's a gravity based spell that takes 15/16ths of current HP and can cause status effects. It would make no sense as sephiroth's whole plan is to destory the planet yet needs alot of help just to do that but can destroy a solar system? No sephiroth can't do that at best he can blow up a planet and that's because he can bring down a large asteroid and it not proven that he would even destroy the whole planet doing this or if he really can it's just that's his end goal to take the life stream. Even look all the time and effort it takes him to do that. Any fight between him and anyone would be over long before the asteroid got to the planet.

Screwattack uses the characters at the height of their power. They have always said that up front. My biggest gripes were how they has Sephiroth holding his sword two handed, not finishing the fight with the Aeris stab, and what they did to his spaulders.

they survived it the same way virgil did. it does 15/16ths hp, which left him at basically nothing, just like it does to cloud and co. supernova doesn't kill. it makes the target able to be oneshot by a sneeze. additionally, it causes confusion, silence and slow (slow being the important part, as in nearly everything, slow affects regeneration rates as well [confusion would work equally well, as most could puzzle out]).

the idea is that the illusion was ended at the contact point. the visuals are just there for aesthetics. (also, he DID port out at the end. or slahsed it out. or whatever exactly happened). not even sephiroth would have stood there expositing against an opponent like virgil. i repeat: the visuals of the fight are just there for aesthetics. the information about SA's research leads to the conclusion. would you have enjoyed a statement like "speed of A > speed of B. power of A = X. resilience of B = Y. A succeeds in doing X - Y damage. result is 0 or less. winner declared. or did seeing flashy sword swipes and skills, the back and forth and all the other visuals leading to the same conclusion?

literally Virgil has been in 3 games or so, sephiroth has been in one, i agree kingdom hearts can be ignored but the lore of dissadia changes nothing from the main lore sephiroth is summoned from his reality to fight, its not a reboot or a sequel its concurrent.

I talked about this I dont really like using Dissidia because all of the characters are either Nerfed or juiced up in order to fit a fighting game style of gameplay. The Dissidia lore is its own thing and there have been times were I have refereed to it for protogainst characters but for Antoginst characters its simply unblanced and as for Vergil I dont count DMC as an official version of Vergil. To me he was proper handled in DMC3 and he became Nelo in DMC1 which is an entirely diffrent character with different abilities

Also something to ask is Supernova an illusion or not because if it is the dmg should be nonexistent to anyone Sephiroth throws it at. An illusion cannot physically harm someone. Also I'm completely aware that quite a few characters from fiction like to test this concept.

Yeah, it is kinda Bull what they did to Vergil. But Death Battle does this thing I like to call “Hype Bias”, where they don’t technically LIE about a character or anything, but they essentially stack all their different forms together while not doing the same for their opponent. Virgil with his full kit and his un-explored speed feats would give Maxed out Sephy a run for his money. And I GUARANTEE you, if DMC 5 had been announced before that battle was made, Virgil WOULD have won. He wouldn’t have even needed Sin Devil Trigger, the hype would have given him the win. But… That’s just how that series is. Death Battle is there to be a business. A very fun one, no doubt! But still a buisness, and if hype for a series is leagues higher for one combatant, they will try their hardest to stretch logic to get them the win. FF7 being the most popular FF game, Advent Children existing, and rumors of the re-make around that time, it was no wonder they favored sephy.

The best feats outside of the god tier characters like Dante, Abagail, Mundus etc. are all town level feats, with an island level feat from Mundus and a multi- continental feat from Abagail, whom Mundus and other god tiers scale to logically. Vergil doesn't even scale that high because he lost to a younger, amateur Dante with consistently town level feats. His best speed feat is massively hypersonic, while Dante has sub-relativistic speed feats by DMC2. but should I get more in depth since I don't know DMC? Actually, there are multiple tweets about the Mundus's dimension and they weren't from a "who would win?" question, just a fan asking what did Mundus create in the final parts of DMC1 and Hideki Kamiya twitter rules would actually help out his reply to the universe tweet so since they don't even break his rules, so that his stance on trolls and his trolling doesn't even count as an argument. Its not an outlier because the character who performs the feat is known to be powerful and one of the most powerful demons, and their are more feats that are higher than town and multicontinental that comes from explanations in the databooks, for example, Mundus mirror world is an alternate universe, the Savior's stairway to heaven recreates levels which are at least large island level to star level and possibly universe level, and the old thing with Mundus=universe in Latin(which is not really a point but helps out Kamiya's intentions with him) And I never said Vergil scales that hight because he just doesn't, I was addressing you saying Sephiroth can solo DMC low-diff. Considering how many times Kamiya said " ask Mundus" or " ask your mom" before going on a mini-rant, yeah, I don't see him being a reliable source, unfortunately. There's also the fact that Mundus has zero universal reality warping feats up to this point, but several teleportation feats. It's more reasonable to believe he teleported them, rather than pulled a power from his ass that contradicts the plot and the amount of effort Mundus went through to succeed. Lastly there's the fact that the only thing we really see is a fade-in to Dante being back where the battle began, before the island level crumbling feat happens. We don't see this new realm fall apart or cease to be, he just ends up back home. Besides, wasn't there a (might misremember the source) manga statement that essentially points out Mundus wasn't even planet level?
