I took up tennis 2 years ago because of Emma Raducanu. (Thank you Emma!) Watching her play so freely and take so much joy in what she was doing was addictive. The positive side of her high profile is that she has brought more women & girls into the recreational game and some of those girls may be future professionals. Sadly, the flip side for her is crazed media and online trolls. I hope she can find that joy and confidence again in a sustained way because I agree with you, she has all the will, drive and technical ability to become a top 20 player once again and win titles in the future.

The amount of people I hear talking about Emma and how lucky she was, what a fluke, she's no good etc is ridiculous. Great insight Nick. This is exactly how I feel about Raducanu. I think she's talented but I don't see her making it to top 10 with her current inconsistencies. The thing that happened with her at the USO is a strange phenomenon that happens in sports where athletes will reach a peak in their level and everything they do during this 'peak' is successful. Unfortunately, everything that goes up, must come down. Everyone knew that the pressure of playing after winning the USO was going to be enormous and I think she coped with it relatively well under these circumstances. She's made a brand of her name and even though she is not the best player on the circuit, we can say that she is having a very successful career.

I thought Raducano wining the US Open was the most amazing thing I’ve seen in tennis. Since then she’s had a succession of coaches and injuries, but hopefully the injuries are now behind her and recently she has reunited with her childhood coach. She had her 2021 success with another British LTA coach so hopefully reuniting with a trusted English coach might pay dividends. I personally think Emma is good for women’s tennis; she plays an exciting brand of tennis and draws attention to the sport in general.

Raducanu is a very graceful player, certainly an asset to the game. I think maybe part of the problem is she could have fallen 'victim' to the Kournikova-'curse', because she also happens to be very marketable and of interest to mainstream media. More time spent on sponsoring obligations, commercials, etc. means less time spent on a court. You cannot compete at the highest level when your opponents are 100% focussed on their job and you're only at 75%. Kournikova couldn't handle the pressure of being in the spotlight or so it seemed, started serving 30 double faults per match and retired at a very, very young age. I would imagine Emma can already retire financially at this point, but I hope she refinds her focus and wants to be remembered first and foremost for her tennis skills and legacy instead of her star power. She has already accomplished one feat Kournikova never managed by winning a tournament (and a GS at that).

I’ve been a fan since Wimbledon 2021 and I’ve been implementing her technique into my game since US Open 2021, The only flaw I noticed when I analyzed her technique is that she does not pronate on her serve. The sophomore jinx can be explained by psychology but is more likely due to statistics. There will always be a certain degree of luck involved in a success. Let's say the odds for a player of Raducanu's level to win a GS is 1/10 or even lower. These odds apply to her next participations too just like for other players of her level. But the focus is on the person who can't repeat success. The "control group" of players who never won a GS, doesn't receive the same focus. Of course, tennis is a game of skill more than luck and winning a GS can be an indicator of skill. But the field is very competitive and not every GS winner turns into a multiple GS winner. The WTA field is leveled out by a major degree, which increases the luck factor in success.
@NamesAreRandom8 ай бұрын
It says more about the WTA than anything. While Raducanu is the most extreme example, the WTA is full of one slam wonders. The women are so much more influenced by confidence - it feels like anyone in the top 200 can go on a roll and come from nowhere to slam win.

Probably too late to comment on NIc's video now, but after I watched it earlier today I also wondered about "luck" in tennis. First, the old adage "luck favors the well-prepared" still holds in tennis. Second, regarding Raducanu's US Open win, luck can mean that in a tournament, someone else might defeat the players that you have no chance against. Is that luck ? I think so. The best example of this comes from Roger Federer's only French Open win, in 2009. In that tournament, Soderling defeated Nadal in the semis, and then Federer beat Soderling in the final. Fed lost to Nadal 4 times in the final against Nadal, and likely would have lost to him again in 2009 if Soderling hadn't done him a favor. So, that's luck no doubt too!

"luck favours the well prepared" is an iteration (plagiarism) from Louis Pasteur (1822-1895), the original being "fortune favours the brave" Quintus Ennius (239-169 BC). Ergo, EMMA having played a Challenger event (Landisville PA) immediately prior to USO 2021 where she was beaten in the quarter final cannot in any way, shape or form be conceived as being "well prepared". Which leads me to the original author, EMMA was brave . There enderh the lesson !!

Of course people are unfair on her. Emma won a slam afterall, maybe with a bit of luck and a favourable draw, e.g. against Sakkari in the semis (and Sakkari is serial choker). But as you pointed out, many other players have done the same, won a big tournament and then fallen by the wayside, and then there are plenty of others who have shown promise but never even won a slam e.g. Bouchard. Problem is that after winning a slam all the other players are more motivated to beat you. She basically needs someone who is very experienced to guide her and maybe also see a sports psychologist.
@ssenssel8 ай бұрын
The fact that WTA Slams are best of 3 sets like the rest of the tournaments (with a super tiebrake to decide the 3rd set as the only main difference) shows that whomever handles the media and hype pressure better for those two weeks can win.. Even a young gun straight out of qualies can do it like Emma have done. It goes to show that at the highest level, where strokes have only cosmetic diferences for the most part, handling pressure is still the key factor to determine who wins. Like any other high level sport. It's funny to think a singles WTA 125 played outdoors during a single week can be harder to win than a singles WTA Slam.. sometimes when it rains, due to delays, players have to play two matches in a day so if both matches last 3 sets you then played 6 sets in 24 hours. Even with heavy rain players never play 6 sets in a day in a singles WTA Slam. Nobody talks about this in main tennis media for fear of cancelling but the truth is WTA Slams are over-hyped 125 events with a super tiebrake. There, I said it.

Yes 1,000,00% unfair. Had she not won, played on the tour for 15 years, won 1 and retire people would say what a great career. She just did it in the wrong order. She won first, so unrealistically, people expect her to win all the time. Many will even say she got "lucky", this is stupid because if you ever play tennis you can get lucky and win a point, a game, a set and maybe (maybe) a match but you don't get lucky and win a Grand Slam. The person on the other side, whatever their ranking, is a professional tennis player as well. She had no control of the draw. So yes, criticism are completely unfair. I suspect many of the criticism comes from a point of seeing someone who seems to have it all get so much so if you are a miserable person you want to see her knocked down a peg or two. It is a common, sadly, human behavior.

Eugenie received flak unfairly, but she had been awesome player for quite sometime, but the fall Emma had seen makes Genie look like a legend ( Which I think she is, given how she handled the criticism ). I think the selling that started the day after US OPen win doesnt even stop now. I think its only fair for people to call out the lack of interest or effort. Its a glitzy but tricky world out there, the same people who catapulted her to stardom now feel duped as she continues to make money while not giving anything back in return. For my money I think Emma's level will eventually settle around 10-30 in the world. Emma’s forehand take back during USO 21 was much longer than it is now. The shallow take back has contributed to her wrist injuries since r puts too much shock to the wrists. Part of the so called hate towards her is driven by her decision to dump Richardson which was seen as very ungracious of her. Of course it’s her prerogative to choose whomever she wants as her coach but the timing was very strange.

Emma is pretty and young, making lots of money from endorsements, but not playing good tennis after US open win. This is good enough to attract haters from supporters of other players, and those British expecting so high of her. And she is so young, if she does not handle the media well, the press will give her hard time and write negative story about her. Being in the spotlight, she really needs a lot of mental strength to handle the pressure, not to mention improving her skills. I believe she could be British number 1 in women tennis. But another grand slam won’t be easy. There are so many one time grand slam winner in WTA. Winning one does not really mean she could win another again

As a Brit I really think I can speak for all of us in that, we really don't care that much if Raducanu does well or bad. The media is just this other beast the hypes players and and destroys them, and the Brits hate it, and see it for what it is.

I don’t doubt Eugenie Bouchard’s tennis ability. She doesn’t get much support because of her attitude. She doesn’t shake hands with her opponents. I feel so bad for Leylah who competed against Emma in the US Open. Leylah moved mountains defeating Naomi and Arya in her brackets to get to the final. She is a petite girl. How did she win these power houses? She was 18 just like Emma. After her defeat in US Open, She went on to play doubles to work on her volleys which has been very successful with Taylor Townsend and Jack sock. She is also making small changes to her game. It is a slow process but she believes in the process. She went on win 3 titles since the US open, 2 in Monterrey and 1 in HK. I doubt she will win multiple slams but maybe one day she will win one. She is a little fire cracker and so inspirational to many petite players. Feel like Emma is lost in the circuit. She needs to surround herself with the right people. She has the tools just need to Stay focus. It’s talent wasted. Look at Sinner, He doesn’t do much press, social media, functions and galas. He keeps them to the minimum. He surrounds himself with the right team.

She's a total diva! And after Genie made the semi-finals of a major, she got extremely arrogant! To the point whereby she would openly disrespect her opponent's game, and talk down to reporters in interviews. Wtf?! You've been famous for 5 minutes and you're carrying this attitude? I'm not at all surprised that both of them have fallen off a cliff. Its because they're both divas. Too busy blaming others instead of themselves.

With respect I'm not sure why you didn't mention what I believe to be the real elephant in the room with her, she has gone through five coaches since she won the US. I have been on the WTA tour as a guest of two top 50 players on separate occasions. The consensus is she's a nightmare to work with and as per usual the parents are way too influential in decision making. FYI it was remarkable to see how Garcias form and game literally exploded once she stopped being coached by her Father, it was like the chains had been taken off. Unfortunately so many of the girls would rather save money ( even top 100 players) by either 'employing' parents or boyfriends as coaches. There are many failed ATP guys still clinging onto the dream and living the life by dating some of these girls. Sachs, Raducanus brief coach was a short term boyfriend of German Annika Beck and fitted the same profile. On a separate note, a friend of mine was a hitting partner of Bouchard and she treated him like absolute garbage. She was never popular on the tour from players so maybe this filters across social media too. Great video as ever by yourself so thanks.

Enough is enough, he needs to gracefully retire. If he wants to continue to play as is his right, he should do it like any other player who wants to play the sport, not on the back of wild cards which really ought to go to eligible up and coming players who are trying to make their mark and can use the help.

A lot of top players did no perform well at that 2020 US open because their preparation was ruined thanks to COVID, in fact a few key players pulled out due to injury as a result so luck was on her side with the draw. The other issue was she kept on changing coach so there was a lack of consistency in her team which top players make clear is crucial, she has had like 5 coaches in two years and one famous coach refused to coach her due to the red flag that here parents had different ideas. To be fair the British press are brutal and went too far to destroy her reputation and put stupidly high expectations on her.
@teddyirons82408 ай бұрын
It was 2021 not 2020. Also you say players weren't prepared but Covid was over and Emma herself had very little preparation given that a few months earlier she was doing her A-Levels.

She won it in 2021. Only 3 of the top 20 weren't playing, so it was still competitive. It was just that the some of the big names lost early. Despite that she still played Sakkari, would have got to the French Open semi-final that year, and Bencic, who had just won the Olympics.
@SycaliDK8 ай бұрын
6 of the top 10 lost to two players (Sakkari d. #10 Kvitova, #6 Andreescu, #4 Pliskova and Fernandez d. #2 Sabalenka, #3 Osaka, #5 Svitolina), 1 lost in R4 (#8 Krejcikova d. #9 Muguruza), and 4 top 8 reached the QF. Bencic (d. by Raducanu) took out #7 Swiatek in R4 and just won Olympic gold and is a former top 10. Sakkari has been a top 10 player since September 2021. The only luck was dodging Barty in the 4th round and maybe Fernandez gauntlet run, but even then she beat so many quality players that it’s hard to say it was a lucky finals opponent
@brooklineg77278 ай бұрын
This is not an objective take on Radacanu and Bouchard. Emma Radacanu became suspect with fans for 2 reasons -- 1) she fired her coach immediately after the US Open and tennis fans dont like change or the perception of ingratitude 2) she immediately sought to exploit fashion/social media appearing at Met Ball etc. and then she could not back it up on the Court. Tennis fans then revisit that US Open, look at the draw she had, the draw Leylah had, and believe she fluked her way through. Genie Bouchard has a reputation as a five letter word, enuff said about her.
@Echoes19108 ай бұрын
Absolute rubbish. 1. She didn’t fire her coach, he was there as a short term agreement whilst she was at the USO. After the USO there was come discussion about continuing, however Andrew Richardson was not going to be able to commit in the longer term. The myth of her sacking Richardson has been perpetuated and just isn’t the case. 2. a career in sport is a short one, it can end at any time due to injury and even if it goes full term, at the highest level you’re looking at 15 years, although there are exceptions to that. The idea that a player shouldn’t take the financial opportunities presented to her because she’s new on tour etc, is frankly preposterous. A LOT of money has been invested in Raducanu just to get to the point of competing on the tour, there has to be a return. She has chosen to be a professional athlete, that’s her job, she’s not a charity and needs to earn money like all of us, however she’s also very fortunate that it’s a lucrative career if managed correctly. She was 18 when she won USO, the pressure on her intensified after her win, that’s a massive change for a girl who was at school just a few months earlier, what realistically did you expect?
@brooklineg77278 ай бұрын
@@Echoes1910 The question on the table is why does she get the hate. If we take your facts as given, the average tennis fan is not familiar with things like her contract details What the fans see is 1) a fickle girl who split with a coach that helped her over the top and 2) a girl cashing in on her looks, while her playing performance declines. If she does the media/advertising tours AND performs on the court, like Sharapova or Venus, she would not get the hate. As to your specifics, I would expect most low ranked players to be on short term arrangements with coaches; and she is said to have gone through 5 coaches in 2 years.
