highly recommend the two euphoria special episodes focused on Rue and Jules if you haven't seen them. They're written almost solely by Hunter Schafer and Zendaya, and explores their characters with arguably more depth than the original show did, without retreading their arcs

Agreed. I love season 1, flaws and all. As for season 2…there are things I enjoyed, but it was a complete mess. With a lot of the characters in season 2, their actions didn’t make much sense. My favorite 2 episodes so far, however, are those 2 in between season 1 and 2. If you didn’t catch those, I highly recommend them. They’re so wonderful.

When it comes to movie reviewers you have been the most consistent with being correct on what movies I actually enjoy and which ones I don't. I mean a lot of people tell me to watch something cuz it's good or whatever and it just sucks, but I guess it just so happens that we agree on most movies. Which I like.

Did you happen to catch the specials in between season 1 and 2? Personally, I loved “Fuck anyone who’s not a sea blob” the best out of any episode. Such a beautiful exploration into Jule’s psyche and it captures a kind of depth/pathos that I wish the rest of the show emphasized (same with Rue’s special as well). Those specials are so grounded and intimate, really letting us gaze into their personhoods. Too bad season 2 was more interested in cheap, empty fanfare (although it was great to look at imo).

I somewhat understand your thoughts and apprehension towards the current state of HBO, but if there is a show that it's an absolutely must watch on HBO is Succession. The intro, the music, the characters, the dialogue is just absolutely phenomenal. It's such an acclaimed TV show but at the same time is not popular at all, it's such a shame that a brilliant show like Succession is completely overlooked... In my opinion one of the greatest TV shows of the last decade, and easily my favorite show currently airing. And by the way, great review on Euphoria, you nail all the major pros and cons of the show, not much to add to your review.

Agreed, but Succession is one of the most critically acclaimed shows of the past decade, so it'd be weird for me to call it overlooked. It's not as popular as Euphoria but that's probably solely based on the demographic and audiences that they appeal to. Euphoria is ridiculous though, every kid has purple LED lights following them at all times and their traits are either they are on drugs or love sex, hell that's literally the pilot.

Couldn’t agree more! Enjoyed season one a lot (though a lot of that may just be because of how much I love Magnolia). I would love to have heard your review of Season Two given as if you had never heard of Sam Levinson. Season Two indeed was indeed more narratively complex, and required more work on my part. @RecliningFurniture

Ooof! Well, I still rate BB as the GOAT. Just about. But BCS got better and better and I think the relatively subdued finale, which I wasn't really sure what to make of at first, is arguably superior to BB's fireworks. I think there were some early stumbles as the writers were a bit TOO keen to show how Jimmy's demons distinguished him from the character we thought we knew from BB. But gradually BCS came together with its own distinct identity, the characters resonated and the show went from strength to strength (while continuing to throw up some genuinely shocking surprises). Of course Bob Odenkirk is brilliant as Jimmy/Saul and provides just the right spark. But what really makes BCS for me is the way the character of Kim Wexler grows and develops from this apparently peripheral figure to the point where she is absolutely integral to everything. Rhea Seehorn's performance as Kim is as compelling as anything I've seen, but it's a performance of such layered subtlety that slowly creeps up on you (or, it did me) that you almost don't notice just how good it is. So, yes, I agree a review of BCS would be both welcome and deserved.

I totally agree with you about the first season, the second season seemed to me at first like they knew where they were going story wise, but that clearly wasn't the case in the end. I personally didn't feel much of a difference at all between the first and second season writing wise at first, but as the season progressed it really fell off the rails, I enjoyed a lot of it and overall liked the season while watching it, but its really only the bad parts of the season that stuck out in my mind as time went on. Jules was my favorite character by far and by like episode 2 or 3 in season 2 she had completely changed as a person, which I would have been fine with if we actually fucking saw that lol, and idk, some characters arcs felt like they had naturally ended to me in season one, like the cam girl didn't seem as if she was going to be an important character in the second season, but like half of the characters are not explored emotionally with any sort of depth, and the show completely skips over how and why they change. Maddy was the saving grace of the season by the end. it really feels like Sam just slowly forgot where he was going and what he was trying to do with the show over the course of the second season.

18:00 I feel like I have to explain myself because I love season 2 so much more than season 1. I'd like to preface by saying, I don't think season 2 is "better". It's just more my thing. Season 2 was everything I look for surreal, kitsch, melodramatic, feminine, intense, fun & sublime. Yes season 1 had all that, but this time it felt like it was amplified. I love things that are over the top. I'm extremely visual so that plays a huge role in things too. Season 2 was a lot higher budget allowing for things I value like it being shot on film & of course the luxurious wardrobe. Costume designer for Euphoria "Heidi Bivens" actively tried to make the fashion more realistic in season 1. But in season 2 she just wanted to have fun with the wardrobe so we got a lot of designer and custom pieces. So this was a plus for me. This season I felt wasn't as dingy, and I know people love season 1 for that. But I always loved Euphoria for it's kitsch side. So this season being less realistic was more entertaining for me. I really loved what you said about Maddy, she's another main reason I love season 2 more. Maddy is one of my favorite fictional characters of all time. It was just so refreshing to see her without Nate. ( Here's a drawing of Maddy i'm working on! imgur.com/dliyohr ) I'm more into the characters they focused on in season 2. As I said I love melodrama & intensity so Cassie is pure entertainment for me. Laurie is another superb addition too, I love the way she makes my skin crawl and the scenes with her dipped into thriller which I loved. In general I just feel this season was a lot more over the top & playful which is what I wanted from Euphoria. Short version: I love a beautiful mess I am BEGGING you please review Twin Peaks & it's Return series. Now that your doing TV Show reviews there's nothing I want more. Thank you so much for much for this review you've made my day! I screamed like 3 times and clicked so fast when I saw the notification for this video hahaha

Honestly I completely agree. However one aspect about the show I dislike is actually about Zendaya, and that is her acting is really overrated. She can act, there were times where she was really pleasant in Euphoria, but the amount of praise is a little much in my opinion. She plays Rue in a very “I’m going to act angsty and be goofy when I’m high” type of way, and it really took me out of a lot of scenes where there was a dramatic event happening and Rue is just being overzealous with the stereotypical addict routine. Maybe it was the direction, or it’s because Zendaya just cant play that type of character. Idk, but the scenes where she was her younger self or wasn’t being that version of Rue, she was a lot better.

I liked Euphoria's visual style. The acting is great for the most part. I'm still not convinced by Zendaya. She has an alluring energy about her, but I don't think her skill is up to par for the kinds of productions she's been involved in. The writing isn't a highlight of the first season. The second season reads like fanfiction. I found everything else about the show to be contemptible. It's very much trying to stir strong emotions, but it never went anywhere with it. I'm attracted to art that disturbs me, that makes me feel uncomfortable because of the reflection, exploration, and discovery that it provokes whether it's about the self, the world, the relationship between the two, or anything else. Euphoria never went beyond the exploitation for me. It just put me back in a world where I didn't fit in and wasn't liked. Not even Game of Thrones has such a wide cast of characters that I strongly dislike as people.

I couldn't even finish season 2. I greatly enjoyed season 1, but man he did Jules dirty from the get go in season 2... Not that I want to make you suffer, but I'm curious what you'd think about his film before Euphoria, Assassination Nation. A film that got generally positive reviews but I absolutely hated it, and a film critic that also hated it (Katie Walsh) was allegedly targeted in the film Malcolm and Marie as "that white bitch from the LA Times..."

They probably would make more sense as college kids. But I also think the show is supposed to be about teenagers. Having them be college age would pretty much just make them adults, maybe not fully formed ones, but adults. I think High School has changed a bit. It’s different for everyone and at every school. But I think high schoolers are much more adult than they used to be, for the most part. Kids are exposed to so much at a young age now, they aren’t as innocent as maybe they used to be. There’s almost no limit to how much the problems and anxiety of the adult world can affect teens now too. I’m just a few years out of high school, and while it’s definitely not as extreme as in the show. All of the problems the characters have to deal with are at least based somewhat in reality.

That's nonsense. Teens and young adults are maturing slower than ever. Many aren't getting their first job or driver's license until they are in college or done with college, parents are always around and kids aren't allowed to be free range like they were when Gen Xer and even older Millennials were growing up. That's parly why there's a mental health crisis today- kids aren't learning how to cope with stress and anxiety because they've been sheltered and controlled too much by their parents and authority figures.

@@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 getting a drivers license doesn’t make a person mature. And idk where you pulled that from anyways, are there metrics you’re looking at? Because I got my license relatively late, at 18. And I was like the very last person in my circle to get it. And majority of these teens have jobs. Especially once they get to college… unless their parents are paying for everything. Or they’re still living at home. If you’re off on your own you can’t not have some sort of income. Also parents are not always around. That’s a great generalization. There’s still lots and lots of absentee parents. Or whatever the term for a non helicopter parent would be, there’s lots of that too. I was very free range as a teen. I know that’s not the same for everyone but I know I’m not an outlier either. I could’ve snuck out anytime I wanted to. But I did not have to because my parents always allowed me as long as they knew where I was going. And if I was going off to do things I wasn’t supposed to be doing then I would just fib to my parents. All of my friends were like this. I was friends with the party group in my grade. We got away with almost everything, and most of our parents were pretty relaxed about most things. I could’ve ran a meth lab out of my bedroom if that was something I wanted to do and my parents would never have known. Kids back in whatever time period had stress and anxieties too. It was just less acceptable to show it, and there was no media to shine a light on it. It seems bigger now because it’s being reported on all the time now. I’m addition to that, kids today grow up with smart phones and social media. Which hacks your brain and is a big reason for all the stress and anxiety. I never cared that much about social media so I was able to side step that for the most part. Kids are exposed through so much through the internet now. And really that’s underselling it. The internet exposes you to everything. Kids back in the day could be sheltered and not know any of the horrors of the world. Kids today can be sheltered and still be exposed to every fucked up thing the internet has to offer. There’s no such thing as blissful ignorance anymore. The average kid is not some sheltered and pampered person you make it out to be.

Season 2 was disappointing, but came around for me in the last few episodes. Especially the finale. But, I think you misunderstood Rue becoming a "drug dealer". She was merely an addict with a lame-brained scheme to sell drugs so she could have access to drugs for herself. It wasn't about hustling to sell product or making money as much as it was showing how desperate and strung out she had become. The fact that she was willing to endanger her life with serious dealers by not making payments, just re-emphasizes that addicts make poor decisions

Euphoria is such a mixed bag for me. I feel like it's mediocre and good at the same time. Idk. I'm also not a fan of watching high school kids be exploited and having sex. To me it's very weird. I also felt that way about Game of Thrones. When I read asoiaf I hated reading about the kids Jon, Dany, etc having sex. Thank god they aged them up in the show but yuck

Angelica Jade Bastien wrote a scathing review of Zendaya’s acting in Malcom and Marie. She said “Despite how much the character champions her own authenticity, Zendaya herself can’t communicate this quality. Her decisions are obvious enough to feel them coming on. A furrowed brow. Jutted chin. She smokes cigarettes like the parody of French actors you’d expect in a midcentury Looney Tunes sketch.” As someone with the same mental illnesses and addictions as her in Euphoria, that’s how her acting looks to me too. I hope one day we are freed from the breakdown acting = good acting.

I liked season 1, up until the music video performance at the end. It was cringe, and felt completely unnecessary to the story. Haven't seen season 2, because all of the buzz around it was just exhausting.

I don't know, while I watched season 1 I felt that not a single character has enough redeeming qualities in order for me to care about what happens to them. Especially Zendaya's drama felt overplayed to the point where it was borderline comedy for me, although I'm not that old (27 yo). I didn't care at all about those artsy fartsy Zendaya-getting-high montages either, seemed to me like a pointless overdramatization. Overall, the edgy appeal of the whole show was lost on me after a few episodes, mainly because the characters were so trashy and unrelatable. Kinda reminded me of Sh*thouse as far as pointless directing is concerned.

M+M is so terrible looking i still cant believe it was actually shot on film. they must have digitally post processed the whole thing. the controversy for the show is just baffling to me-i went to a conservative catholic high school in the midwest twenty years ago and there were kids od'ing, having sex, trying to kill themselves etc. Nothing about this shows content seems unrealistic to me.

Season 2 pros: Cassie and Nate storyline was great Fez and Cassie-sis storyline Rue kicking off at home Rue out burst at sponsor The play All of Maddie Cons: Drug dealers storyline Kat story line (not bad just boring) Conclusion of Nate and father story line It had great moments but it didn’t gel. All the guy needs is a writers room breaking bad style and it would be cinematic gold dust. First season works because it’s still all introduction. He’s world building for most of it with a little bit of story. Season 2 needed to start spinning some gears

I found season 2 much more to my liking as it felt more adult and I really liked the vintage look. But I agree that Jules wasn't properly utilized in season 2. And of course it was pretty unrealistic at times. And after watching this review I realize that Levinson might be a bit too occupied with stuff around the show, and that theater thing with Lexi felt really off and out of character. Zendaya really is a good actresses and she had some really great scenes in season 2.
