People made this into a way bigger deal than it actually is. I saw a big KZbinr who's usually pretty well informed say H-1bs account for 15% of the workforce. The reality is that it is well under 1%.

I have worked in tech for 20 years. My coworkers used to be pretty much all Americans. Now? I work on a team of 15 people; 3 of us are American. The rest are from India. When the best high paying jobs are no long filled by Americans, there is a problem. Don’t get me wrong, I like most of the people I work with. But we might as well give up on America if we don’t hire its citizens.

@Callitout-kl1uq yeah, and as someone who also works as a software engineer with many Indians, I can bet you most likely nearly all if not all your Indian colleagues are working from India (from India office or remote) or if they are in America have immigrated via other means. H-1bs does not apply to overseas workers, even if the company is US- based. If the job is posted in India and they work remotely or from India office, H-1b does not apply. So, if you want to raise a stink about outsourcing jobs to other countries, go ahead. But that is a whole different issue to H-1b situation, hence proving my point that all the FUD directed specifically at H-1b is way overblown. It's a much smaller program than you realize and practically only adds competition in US tech companies that require working onsite in the US

Do you have any experience with H-1B visas? I do. Trust me, we are not getting the best and brightest. It’s a lottery system. I have worked with many visa holders who I think “no way in hell they have a degree.”

@@MenAreSpeaking If you need to build the schools to teach the skills then you have already lost. H1B visas are a means to fill a skills gap until the schools can catch up and teach what the workforce needs. Those filling the skills gap must have learnt their skills from somewhere, so teaching must be able to fill the demand - and that teaching is happening elsewhere. Musk is unusually talented, but he's typical of the autistic: he cannot imagine what it is to be like others and to learn like others. You want the West to be great; I want the West to be great, but it doesn't become great by importing sklls and not teaching them.: not in perpetuity.

I think you're the missing the point raised by most of the criticisms against H1B. Most of it is seems to stem from the flood of sub-par software "engineers" in silicon valley. If most would be at the level where you seem to be, the backlash would not have been as strong.
