For myself, I look at book creators a bit suspiciously because creators/influencers are 'in business'. No shame in that; we all want to get paid for putting in work, but it is on my own self to decide what to take in and take on. Books are not cheap, even paperbacks are pricey so I have to be wary of trends and hype and remember that I am not rich and I get turned down a lot at Net Galley so I read what I can and with what I can afford and thank my Local library a lot.

I find it rather fun going into dollar stores or discount stores just to find new books because its one of those places where no one cares about such items, well except me so yeah I can find some good reads for cheap.

me too! charity shops are my favorite to search around in!

Ooh this is a really well thought out video. My thoughts on overconsumerism? Well, it's the idea that an individual is buying books in the mindset of Fear Of Missing Out (FOMO) and the indiviual puts buying new books first instead of paying their bills first(a hypothetical worse case scenario) which is my ultimate concern. I too grew up LOVING libraries and the vast amount of books and movies they had to offer growing up; best part about it? I didn't have to break the bank to enjoy a story or worry about FOMO I don't even read popular books or authors now. I'm an avid horror book and manga reader and my shelf is a mix of new,old or gifted books given to me or bought by me in a strategic manner. Asof now, I'm reading what I have on my shelf and im happy with that. I like to take my time with what i read because I read for the enjoyment of reading and the relaxing benefits it's given me over the years. 🙂❤️📚

ah I am so glad you liked it and YES the fomo fears are so real. I still am an avid library user and love the digital content they offer which I adore! I wish more people had access to great libraries.

I think it becomes a problem when you buy more books than you read (talking about myself lol)

I completely agree and I love all of the points you made. This is such an interesting video and puts in to words all the emotions I feel surrounding reading so thank you! Especially in relation to the validity of you as a reader being dependent on this overconsumption seen in social media ❤

thank you for watching! I wasn't sure if this was going to be cohesive haha, but yes! I feel like all these conversations touch upon this core concept

Yeah I grew up checking out books from the library. I would buy books at used book stores for 50 cents. This was over 30 years ago. I don’t have storage space so I do not buy books.
@UtopiaStateofMind7 ай бұрын
Yes! I remember buying bargain books for that price and just stocking up on the oldest books from library sales or used book declutters!

this has been a problem for me for many years though I've never not paid a bill or not paid for something I really need because of it. Periodically I'll throw out (without ever reading them) books I've bought because it's unlikely at my age I will even live long enough to finish them. But later I will buy NEW books so the cycle will continue. NOW I've told myself I will neither throw out anything nor buy anything else. We'll see what happens haha⚛😀
@UtopiaStateofMind9 ай бұрын
lol definitely with you about the cycle! I'll be like, nope don't need and then waffle about for like months on end!

Like the video But for some videos books are gifts you can keep opening again and again Even designer clothes they eventually wear off or you pass it on to someone which is also good
@UtopiaStateofMind12 күн бұрын
yeah I love passing my books along either to friends, charity, or selling them to someone who wants them!

how on earth is just under 20 minutes `a long video`? I had to pause for a second to make sure it wasnt over an hour long or something.
@UtopiaStateofMind9 ай бұрын
haha I'm with you! I just feel like most my videos are shorter and full of reviews, so this was a bit different from that!

lol - I don't care if a person does not have a single book in their house. They are now a definite reader if they borrowed one from their local library and started reading it lol

Readers didn’t really think commodity fetishism would stop at books, did they? That’s adorably naive.
