That's the exact same reason I'm entering. Data. Data helps us all. Excellent point about the guys who do nothing but cams, it's an educated/experienced guess based on previous engine data. You don't know what you have until it's compared against something else. Good luck to you sir!

I 100% agree! That is why I sent a cam in as well. I think this is turning into something pretty cool. If, for some reason, I were to win something in the contest (which is not really even my goal), I will just donate it back. I think we are ALL going to be better off, from a knowledge standpoint, after this thing is finished.

One thing I am curious about is I wonder if a lower placing cam could actually do better on the track in an identical car?

A while back Richard Holdener did some hydraulic LS cam testing and found more power with longer pushrods beyond what the rocker arm geometry indicated was correct. I asked him why...and postulated that the lifters were slightly pumping up thereby making the cams act larger than they actually were. He responded that the lifters weren't pumping up but didn't offer an explanation of why they made more power...which told me he didn't really understand why. Hopefully this cam testing will shed some light on the subject and thank you for participating!
@zacharymorris99174 ай бұрын
There is less oil on the bottom side of the plunger and higher plunger return spring/check valve pressure. I proved the longer pushrod theory about 15 years ago by complete accident. Not only do they make more power, but they are also significantly quieter. Quieter is what I was looking for. Extra HP was a nice surprise.
@lollipop848584 ай бұрын
He knew why. The why was something he didn't want to share
@zacharymorris99174 ай бұрын

@craigritchie19334 ай бұрын
I'm no expert. However, as the engine increases in RPM, the oil starts to airate , and the air in the lifter can compress slightly, thus reducing lift and duration . David Vizard talks about adjusting hydraulic lifters at the bottom of its travel for this reason, not at the top of its travel like most of us would do
@saab92514 ай бұрын
Is anyone certain that a lifter stays 100% full and rock solid during engine operation? If it collapses at all, you’re losing lift and duration. Checking lengths with the current methods only tell you of the result assuming 100% solid lifter operation. The longer push rod may become the correct length and account for the lifter partially collapsing at rpm.

Hi, I also follow Eric. I agree completely. I think this is an excellent way to accumulate knowledge. I was a little surprised he made the max lift as high as he did. Does he consider that the max lift for a street able LS cam? Or is .668? ( is that his max lift?) at the edge of HIS valve train reliability at this max lift? My big concern? Most of these internet experts- the ones who will scream the loudest- about things they know nothing about- will do just that when cam "C" makes 3 hp less than cam "J" As you know, there are so many variables as to why 1 cam makes omg! 5 more hp at 7k than another cam. I am glad you entered. I hope you and the others who entered all learn something from this. Good luck.

Now, I doubt Eric is going to spend the time to optimize each cam to this engine, but at least you'll have the data for that specific package. Then you can make 'educated guesses' from there, when your customer wants slightly different components that deviate from this setup.

You are absolutely right. With cams and all sorts of variables it's kind of like the English language, there are exceptions to the rule. No one person can grind a cam that works best for everybody due to many different variables. Carbs are the same way and people sometimes can't understand it's their combination that's making things hard and also you can't just bolt on a carb without tuning things other than jets and idle screws.

Internet experts are the best entertainment. You can pretty easily tell who has never put their hands on something. Fact is, there is no perfect template. All you can do is get close and start experimenting. Every engine base and application has far too many variables to make a repeatable result every time. I have asked other builders if a larger than 1.600" exhaust valve on a blown SBC with a 4.125" bore. Would see any benefits and all I got was that is what fits so that's what we run, which doesn't really answer my question. I'm just thinking that 1.600" valve is the one constant factor and I question if we are adjusting everything else to work around it.

You hit it on the head! There’s a big difference between a “Dyno” cam and a real world works in a chassis cam. The 11.45-1 SCR is a limitation especially with the large port volume and high numbers in the heads. I was able to come up with a cam: 662 hp @6500 594 TQ @5000 Avg hp 579 Avg TQ 555 Eric says the dyno will adjust to sea level/temp/humidity. The DCR with the cam I specs so far is so low it would run on pump gas. 😳👍

My main question would be.. Do all participants get everyone's specs and placing after it's over? To me, that would make it very valuable.

Yes, that's how it's laid out

@powellmachineinc3179 That's great. I expect the top 5 to be within about 5% of each other. Would be shocked if there was a run away that's ground against the norm. But then everyone would be scratchin their head!

In regards to selecting a cam for myself, I've opted for the smaller side that bigger. That being said I've always been street and strip. If a drag only car big is prob better
