The R2.8 engine and repower program is one of the best programs ever offered to gear heads, do-it-yourselfers and off roaders. Fantastic engine and great support from Cummins with their online knowledgebase (transmission mounting plates, engine mounting brackets, etc).

An overdrive trans makes a world of difference in any old vehicle, lets you reach HWY speeds without the engine screaming. Fuel injection & electronic ignition will also "improve" things a ton. Those are my top 3 picks to "improve" an old ride. I still have a carb, points & a 3 speed 😆

My 67 C10 is running a crate GM fuel injected (Ram Air) 350, I have a 700R4 in it, but have a 6 (6L80) speed automatic waiting to go in. I am waiting on the electronics/wiring harness still. It’s new territory for me a bit, so I am enlisting the help of a buddy that is a Toyota Technician. He drives a 2021 F150 5.0 SuperCab with a Pro Power Onboard as his camper. He hauls a lightweight truck camper in it and loves it, especially the generator aspect. He had my 2014 Tundra that was a horrible truck for me and a bit of a PIA for him as well. He refused to buy a full size Tundra again!!! Hahaha. Me too!! (Not really, I have driven the new Tundra DoubleCab 4x4 3.5 L TT V6. Much nicer truck than the prior model!! I’m tempted, but have a 2022 F150 Tremor as my modern truck) The 67 C10 also has 4 wheel Wilwood disc brakes. It otherwise looks stock on 15 x 8 rally’s or 15 x 8 and 15 x 10s Cragar SS with TAs for tires…… I enjoy the truck immensely. It’s a very fun and nice thing running a more modern powertrain in the older vehicles. I’m not a big fan of the LS conversions mind you. To each their own. I don’t knock the LS conversions, as some friends have some very i press I’ve trucks with these motors providing some very reliable and good looking motivation!!

I remember buying a 1975 FJ40 new off the lot for $5,600.00. The 258 cu in six had some torque due to the 4.11:1 differentials and the "Hi-Low" range transfer case. But it was no speed demon on the highway with a no overdrive four speed manual. Fuel mileage sucked and the engine valves eventually burned due to the high road speeds I ran at with unleaded gas. I added a 22 gallon transfer gas tank in the rear to increase the range. The main 18.5 gallon gas tank sat under the front passenger seat and was prone to internal rust due to being in front of the under dash cabin heater. With the extreme temperatures of hot and cold in the Winter, water would condense in the tank and it needed a lot of gas fuel deicer (Methanol "Drygas") to emulsify the water build up in the tank. I had to buy a case of it. No power steering or brakes. But I liked it in the snow.

Aussie videos show that the running gear except the engine are robust and handle the Duramax swap pretty well. Loving a rugged look Aussies love. Fascinating seeing a US version of BJ 40’s build that’s not ‘picture perfect’ or too big an engine for fuel mileage. (Aussie versions are more then 95% diesel - hence BJ not FJ). 2.8 Cummins looks mint! Too many kilometres travelled over here and 9.7 km per litre looks Aussie proof indeed. Years ago (1990) I was down in Costa Rica with some friends. Two of them were from S America so language wasn’t a problem. We rented this lady and her Toyota Land Cruiser to drive 4 of us around for about a week. Her Toyota was like a suv or suburban style and there was room for everyone to sit. There was a lot of hills we were going up and down in and her Toyota cruised right along with out a hitch. It was also a diesel. I really liked the setup but you couldn’t buy it that way in the US. My son has a 70 FJ 55 perhaps he might like this idea.

On average you get 30% better fuel economy on diesel. So when diesel gets 30% higher than regular unleaded they cost about the same to drive. That rarely happens. Here in California it's at about 20%. If it gets to 30% that means some refinery had an accident.

even though diesel is more expensive than gas, you are still far ahead in terms of saving $$, Diesel does more MPG, I would like to say 30% more so that alone offsets the cost of it plus you don't need to refuel as frequently, way more torque so it just moves at low revs, Love it.

I’m gonna swap a new crate cammed headers LS3 in my C5 Corvette! It will be a sleeper up against new SRT 8s and C6 and 7 Corvettes! I’ve been saving for 2 years, almost their! I’ve beat 1st gen SRT8s with my stock LS1!

I'm in the same boat...converting to disc brakes and thinking about power steering (not sure if it's a necessity at this time though). This is my third and last FJ so I'm going to take my time with future modifications. Although it came with the hard top I plan on using a new soft top from Bestop in the near future. I had one on my last FJ and loved it.

The original 6 had plenty of power for going up hills, etc. The issue was the 3 and 4 speed were not overdrive transmissions so modern highway speeds are at higher RPMs. The diesel engines have the same issue so either way you are talking an overdrive. I looked at the swap he did for another truck and it is expensive and underpowered compared to other gas options that deliver better performance at much lower cost while still getting decent MPG. One more thing about highway speeds. These are a handful with the short wheel base, leaf springs, and weight up high. Going fast down a highway is probably not the best idea in the world.

You compare the 40 and the Cruiser in the beginning then say that the 40 would be the cheaper option. By the time all that work is done I’d be surprised if it didn’t cost way more to do up the 40. The old 2F engine has enough power but the fuel economy is like a screw driver in the fuel tank. I have toyed with the idea of doing a diesel swap in mine for years but could never justify the cost. I wish you had of mentioned how much the engine swap came to. Dave
