My Thoughts on the Denon LC6000 DJ Controller

On todays show I discuss the Denon LC6000 DJ Controller
Denon DJ has announced the all new LC6000 PRIME Performance Expansion Controller. It has a similar look, design, and feel of the flagship SC6000 Media Player, but the LC6000 gives DJs a professional hardware controller for a much lower price but we will get to that in a minute.
Denon is promoting the player as a secondary dual-layer controller unlocking Engine OS powered media, but I think this controller is more useful with Serato, DJay, and Virtual DJ vs how it was intended to be used (If you haven’t fully bought into the Engine Prime ecosystem). I have to give it to Denon they are one of the best in building solid and versatile hardware for professional DJs and the LC6000 is no exception this DJ Controller is compatible with all major DJ applications (except Traktor and Rekordbox of course), giving DJs the ultimate professional hardware control in their setup.
Hardware
The first thing you notice is the large 8.5” jog wheel with color screen and multi-function performance pads. The design of the unit is similar to its big brother the SC6000 media player along with its 100mm dual-precision pitch fader and navigation control. What is missing is the large touch screen, SD Card reader, and usb hub which makes it a little more subtle but very different from the larger unit. On the back there is a single usb connection to power up the unit as well as connect it to a SC6000 or a laptop as a controller. The LC6000 has all of the multi function pads like Hot Cue, Loop, Roll, and Slicer for enhanced creativity and remixing ‘on-the-fly’ making it no slouch even without the glorious touchscreen that garnered all the praise from the prime 4, SC5000 and SC6000.
Connectivity
Keeping in line with its previous controllers and media players the LC6000 is compatible with Virtual DJ, Algoriddim djay Pro AI & Serato DJ Pro giving DJs alot of options for how ever they want to use the units which frankly I prefer. I’ve been preaching that it is better to give options to DJs and let us decide how we want to use the hardware and software and Denon continues to deliver.

You mentioning if you have Prime players and mixer that the LC6000 likely isn't high on your list of priorities, imma push back on that one. Depending on what you play and how you play, these make plenty of sense. I'm a mix and blend drum n bass deejay with a pair of SC5000 and am super into these. When I'm really feeling myself/feel brave, I use the layers function. It hasn't been perfect every single time, but having a discreet unit to control that other layer? Shiiiiiiiiet. Needless to say, I've been thinking about these all day, lol.

I should have been more clear I didn't mean nobody would want them if they already had a SC5000 or SC6000 I was making the point that the group of DJs who want these to play 4 decks probably isn't a large group of denon owners. It seems to be more of a niche secondary product to them but a primary product to DJs who want or have a mixer like a S7 / Rane 70 and would like a cheaper Denon controller for Serato but can't afford a SC6000, but I totally agree it depends on what you play and how you play. I'm really curious to see what DJs do with these things in their current setup.

the thing I can't wrap my head around is that you can only use it one way with Denon gear but if you use it on Serato or Virtual DJ you have more options. Denon didn't make the Denon experience the best or the most versatile

I kinda think they're going for being the alternative for clubs. Being significantly cheaper, while still offering the same experience as the pioneers might be interesting to a small amount of clubs that just want something that works. I imagine if the software catches up, some clubs might consider it. or not, pioneer is pretty dominant in the professional space.

I think the best layout is 1 SC6000 and a LC6000 with denon gear but other than that it works best with serato or virtual dj

I think this is a great product for anyone who is comfortable using a laptop as the media source but who wants a modular setup. This will make it easier for digital DJs to make use of send/return loops on standalone mixers without needing to use midi controllers that don’t resemble club hardware. Single deck software controllers haven’t been on the market in a long time, and I think there is a market for them. The software compatibility is fantastic and will make these an attractive buy for a lot of people. Personally this isn’t a great fit for me as I want to ditch the laptop entirely for a modular standalone setup, but current media players for a home setup are still absurdly expensive. Pioneer is still selling the XDJ 700 for around $700 and it’s unclear if they’ll ever refresh that line. Ideally I’d like to see Denon or Pioneer release a stripped down, single layer media player for around $500. Give affordable flexibility for home DJs to play a little more creatively without needing to spend $3k+ on hardware that belongs in a club.

Personally I plan on getting a pair being that I already have an SC6000 set up with X1850 mixer. I mainly play electronic music and multi deck mix. Honestly It’s not even a thought being that I already use layers. Love the video!!

I wish the LC6000 came out sooner. Last month I bought a pair of sc5000m and x1850. I would of instead bought the LC6000 with a sc6000 and hook it up to my two channel mixer. But, I don't regret my purchase. In fact, having the motorized sc5000m has sparked my interest in vinyl. I do wish the LC6000 would have RCA out in order to have the option to use any mixer of choosing instead of having to connect the mixer via USB to the laptop.

It currently doesn't work with the Prime4, Prime2, or Go. I would buy it to connect to my S11 with Serato - leave my turntables at home.

When I say DVS its shorthand for a competitor to rekordbox dj serato or virtual dj to use the LC and augment it with a laptop, denon could make cheaper gear and reach other markets outside of the all in one djs and festival djs

@@DJKeo I felt that Denon's only real competitor is pioneer. They already do everything pioneer does at a cheaper price accept for dvs, they still need to rely on serato for that. Regardless I'm still a Denon DJ fan👌

I wouldn't replace my D2's because of the screens but I would buy this for the jog wheels and other functionality. Currently have an overpriced XDJ Mk2. I would sell that quickly

@@DJKeo Indeed. THAT is the market. I struggle between having to buy a CDJ just control Traktor or their tiny ribbon based controllers. I guess Traktor says your jog wheel is your DVS turntable.... but yeah, that is a somewhat different debate :)

Standalone with WIFI is the base of the future of DJ'ing, In my opinion I say this coming from Sony direct drive turntables to Technic 1200's to Vestax turntables with almost every mixer brand Gemini Numark Vestax Rane. I have all Denon Prime series, Go, 2, and 4 and to be honest with my Pioneer ddj 1000's Serato and Rekordbox, the Prime series are the TRUTH !!!

Bro, I think you've kinda missed the point, LC stands for layer controller, first and foremost that's what it is, software controller second, it also works with 5000 and 5000m which as a media player accessory makes this huge value for money....

using it as a add on to your SC6000 is a tiny niche market, which is why they made it compatible with serato and virtual dj and I'm guessing this is probably what the majority of people will buy it for. In my opinion if they want to grow engine prime they need to replace Serato and Virtual dj with their own branded software not give the competition more value to your costumers

@@DJKeo when you analyse why the prime units were made it was a shot across the bow at pioneer cdjs, buying one unit and the Lc makes perfect sense, the whole reasoning is in the name LC.. Being a layer controller was obviously its prime ( excuse the pun) purpose otherwise denon would not have built the prime series with dual Layer? Hence the name? the software comment I agree on, but they added that imo to obviously boost sales, but you never know? Hopefully your deduction with the dvs or performance mode comes true... I'll definitely jump on here and say " you were right"

I'm probably missing something but why is DVS support so important? The only use case I can think of is if you have turntables but no CDJ/controller and want to play digital tracks. Outside that I have no idea why people need it!? And in that case this unit is irrelevant anyway.

Its a short hand way of explaining engine prime needs to expand like rekordbox became rekordbox DJ which supported top end gear and cheaper gear. That is how pioneer grew its market share, also the point is to convert all levels of djs not just the controller cdj market over to Denon. I covered it in my denon state of the union video

So you can't use dual deck, go out and spend some more damn money to get it right. I think this thing looks hideous. Does nothing for the rest of the Prime series. I rather have another SC6000. By Christmas people will be selling these for $350. Rather have Denon support for the Rane 12.
