I just watched this. As someone who lost a son. Him dreaming about an interaction or the future with him and that all played out in his mind on screen was pretty relatable from my perspective. I too would often wonder as he does what could’ve been.

Depression in real life is very very melancholy. But it's super hard to depict that to a normal audience and have it be "entertaining". Very curious to see it but hope it isn't the Hollywood screaming and constantly crying depiction, although it's based on a play so it's 100% going to be.

If depression is shown in the movie as constant crying and high emotion, it shows Florian Zeller simply doesnt understand the subject matter that he's decided to tackle.

Would you say Jackman still has a decent shot to win Best Actor as of now or is it gonna be a three horse race between Brendan Fraser, Austin Butler, and (after his Venice win) Colin Farrell

I think Jackman is battling for the nomination.

This whole movie was about demonic possessions. And how they go unnoticed.... its such a sad movie, the son battles depression. Through God's word we know thats the spirit of depression. Also anxiety and suicide and more he has. The devil will always tempt you. The devil tempted him and found an opening when he realized his parents split. So thags where the darkness crept in. Then it fucks with his head daily. He spaces out goes into small lil transes. And starts to get more aggressive overtime. Even the creepy looks. Eyes are the window to the soul. That was the angry demon showing how much he truly wanted them all to suffer. His son wasn't challenging him when they had that convo. A demon was challenging him. Because the more he feeds the demon the stronger it gets. Think about it he feels sad and he cant take the weight of the world. Whats the weight ? The weight is the feeling of having demons hold you down. Then they do what all parents do they took u to the hospital where they just feed the demon even more. So the demon tells the kid, the boy its inside of. that he's useless and that he should kill himself. The son listens. So he has to act and deceive. The devil is a liar. So he does what he does. He lies and gets the boy out the hospital. But the devil is a liar so he keeps lying through the boy..... makes him backtrack and harp on the old relationship his parents had. Toxic if you ask me, toxic aka demonic. The the devil tempts him with a gun. After the knife incidents. If the devil couldnt "accidentally" cut a vein deep enough to kill him, he would do what he did. Which was going and getting the gun. The devil was aware it was in the house. Thats giving the devil access to use thes things in your home against you..... im really breaking this down for yall i hope you understand. Cause while im watching this, i bet the true essence of this film will go over so many heads. But no, the devil mocks you by doing so. He's literally telling people theyre too dumb to realize. But you dont have to be That was never the son speaking .... barley at all through this movie the son was never there. Ummmm yeah i cant believe nobody said that he needs Jesus Christ ... but this is how people really are in real life .... blind. Blinded by the enemy. He even puts it in movies and people still act blind to the snare. May God open your eyes to the truth. In all its glory I ask whoever sees my comment to go and speak to the lord ask him to show you the truth and nothing but the truth. If you wish to be aware of whats around you, ask for his guidance. Cause for most it apears through the flesh. Yes. On another note this movie did good getting straight the point if you ask me. They showed you how people act in these situations. How they act blind to what the child is going through. Parents are suppose to protect us. Yet they don't even know this is the reality of our world. So kids go undelivered all the time. And his acting not being good, id say that's because they wanted to keep him in a state of disconnect. That's how it really is. Chaos. N the devils first task is to break the family then the person it wants. also this being pg-13 is alarming. As a 13 yr old this movie would puzzle me so much. Only cause yall didn't see demons or blood doesn't mean the two aren't connected. Can i get a HELLO LOVE IS ENOUGH BUT ONLY GOD N JESUS'S LOVE!! FOR IT STRENGTHENS US

The ending was great and very realistic. Can't see someone surviving a shot from a hunting rifle. Totally irresponsible if it happened in real life, I'm sure any arms and even knifes would have been removed if they knew the son was suicidal/depressed. But the ending portrayed regret from Hugh Jackman's character was beautiful and tragic. I was also glad at how the stepmom reacted to when the son suggested to babysit the newborn. Yeah, that's a big no. You're not babysitting my newborn when they're not mentally stable. Not saying all depressed teens are incapable of babysitting, but from their side, I understand why she was hesitant. From the side of the teenager, I thought it was pretty accurate. The frustration of disconnect from your parent because they are constantly comparing their upbringing with yours was spot on. Being encouraged to party and make friends when you aren't that kind of person. Hugh Jackson's character not understanding how detrimental divorce can be for a child. Parents constantly weaponizing their hard work or hard upbringing to say "I've given you "everything" so you should automatically be happy". Communicating with your child is never easy, and you should always be careful with what you say. Its not about being worried that you're raising a child that is sensitive. You should never compare your upbringing to your child because that child is NOT YOU. They are their own person.

The sort of losing interest in the movie (at least I believe) is intentional. And it goes in line with the "manipulative" ending, it's just made the experience immersive. This is not an entertaining movie it's enjoyable though. It's not a nuance take on the genre or depression as an idea, but it depicts it very well. Acting wise, it was great all around, but the son could have been better casted I just don't see it as the fault of the actor.
