Toni Morrison ( 1931 - 2019 ) she was American novelist and editor. Her first novel bluest eyes , was critically acclaimed Song of Solomon, brought her national attention and national book critics circle award . In 1988 she won Pulitzer Prize for beloved, she won awarded noble prize in literature in 1993 . As I read too Toni Morrison Nobel lecture which she mentioned takes form of parable that illuminates power of language as both force of life and tool of destruction. Thank you for giving us chance to read and learn new information and improve our English as well.

I really want to get into Morrison but I have a very hard time reading description traumatic events and violence (possibly because it's so triggering). I admire you taking on such a heavy read. Thank you for sharing some of the gems of this novel.

Yes I could defintiely see how this book might be triggering, something about the matter of fact way the deeds are described, and in some cases without a lot of warning. One has to feel resilient when reading Morrison. My first reaction was quite negative, but the more I thought about things the more I think I see what she was trying to do.

Thank you mrs Cathie for your wonderful cultural literary channel. I gathered main theme of novel you mentioned and author biography briefly here it’ sula plot summary it’ published in 1973 . Story of two black women friends , or their community of medallion, Ohio . Community has been stunted and turned in ward by racism of larger society. Raged and disorded lives of townspeople are seen as reaction to their stifled hopes . Major theme is friendships. Conflict of novel over sula giving into her sexual desires with nel husband . Setting of novel ( 1919- 1965 ) bottom town of Ohio . Nel Wright is sula best friend, also considered main protagonist. Final scene of novel resolves Nel estrangement from sula . Brings no healing closure , sula is dead , Nel can only mourn .sula novel deals with universal themes such as race, womanhood, effects of history and contingencies of love .

I really should have talked more about Nel the other main character! But in my mind she is kind of eclipsed by Sula.

I've read Beloved, but I didn't care for it at the time. I need to tackle more of Toni Morrison's books, but I prefer the Harlem Renaissance writers more. Thanks for sharing your commentary.

I can totally understand that Morrison is not to everyone's liking. Will look into to the Harlem Renaissance writers for sure! Hope you are doing well!

@thegrimmreader3649 Except for arthritis pain at times and not enough hours in the day, I'm doing pretty good.
