a small mountainous landlocked country with very cold, often snowy winters. but the summers are often very hot and dry, and really windy.

The desert gets colder at night (and on cloudy days) as sand isn’t able to hold on to the heat once the sun disappears. In the Great Lakes region, the sun will heat up any bodies of water and they retain it, thereby warming up nearby land. ( Yeah, it isn’t ALWAYS cooler by the lake.)

Funny, but it’s not that cold in Afghanistan. The lowest temps were in December and January…42 degrees.

When I was there in 2012 it got into the low teens. Bagram. The ice on the ground was slippery and brutal.
