Debt is how much you owe. Like if you borrow $100 from your sister, your debt is $100. Deficit is the amount you need that you don't have. Like a thing cost $5 and you have $3, your deficit is $2. On a national scale, it's larger amounts, but still the same idea.

The national debt is analogous to the mortgage on your house that is so outrageously big, you can only afford to pay the interest. The deficit is how much money you’re short at the end of the month to pay for necessities, so you take out a home equity line to make up the shortfall, and also service the interest on your mortgage…. Yes, that’s crazy talk, and it’s also unsustainable. BTW Batman Cat is hilarious. Check it out, it’ll lift your spirits.
