Thank you for bringing up the lack of unique weapons issue in the last several games, that honestly was such a huge part of what drew me into the side questing/world building in their games. this new system is fine so long as they also have the unique weapons with quests too...

Yep. I never really enjoyed the legendary system until I realized that I only hated it because it basically fully replaced the unique weapon system. Both can exist as long as the uniques aren’t just the same weapons with legendary perks. Look at Skyrim with its awesome Daedric artifacts with unique enchantments as well as the normal enchants in random weapons. They had the design down and they fucked it up for Fallout. 😂

I turned 53 this week. I can see how younger generations would see Todd Howard as an important figure. For my generation, it was Richard Garriott, the creator of Ultima. He was one of the most important figures in the creation and early evolution of computer RPGs, but he eventually ran his course. Origin Systems sold out to Electronic Arts, and Garriott went down some paths that old Ultima fans didn't appreciate. For me, the Ultima series peaked with Ultima VII, and it went down hill rapidly after that. After Garriott parted ways with Origin and Electronic Arts, he never did anything else in the industry that gained significant attention. Though I will always appreciate what Richard Garriott and the people who worked with him accomplished, I also recognize that he had limited staying power. I'm starting to feel the same way about Todd Howard. He didn't create Elder Scrolls, but his passion helped to keep it alive through tough times, and his leadership on Morrowind was critical to the revitalization and long term viability of Bethesda. But his best work was around this time - Morrowind and Oblivion, and bringing Fallout into the 3-D system that had become popular at the time. Beyond this, I feel like the cracks were starting to show. There was a noticeable decline from Ultima VII to Ultima VIII, but Skyrim and Fallout 4 still generally work well. It is after this that problems really develop, with Fallout 76 and Starfield. I see Todd Howard, who was once a highly skilled developer and producer, becoming a marketroid. He is a good salesman, and he tells people what they want to hear. The problem is that the final product doesn't measure up, and the criticisms of Fallout 76 and Starfield bear this out. I won't play Fallout 76 because I can't stand multiplayer games, but I have followed the news since its launch. It seems that Bethesda has managed to salvage something reasonably playable after the initial disaster, but a multiplayer Fallout wasn't ever something that the core fan base asked for, and we have been waiting for a very long time for another mainline single player game. As for Starfield, I have not yet bought it, but again, I have followed the news, and I have watched game play videos. Daggerfall was my first Bethesda game, and while I loved it because it was doing something new, I must regard it as something of a failed experiment because of its overreliance on procedural generation. It looks like Starfield was heavily influenced by Daggerfall, and not in a good way. If it had brought back the depth of RPG systems in Daggerfall, I would have been interested. Daggerfall has some of the best RPG systems I have ever encountered. Unfortunately, it looks like Starfield has brought back the worst aspect of Daggerfall, which is the huge, repetitive, boring procedurally generated world. Maybe Todd and his crew wanted to bring back some of Bethesda's past, but if this is the case, they brought back the worst part of it. If Todd Howard is looking at this aspect of Daggerfall and seeing it as a way forward, then I'm afraid that he is going down the wrong path, and it is only inevitable that Bethesda will release a game that is reminiscent of Ultima IX, which was the ignominious downfall of the single player Ultima games. (Ultima Online was, and still is, successful, but again, I can't stand multiplayer games, so I will not go anywhere near it. I hate to say it, but the idea behind Ultima Online was Richard Garriott's final success, and it spawned lots of other multiplayer games that I want nothing to do with.) I haven't even gotten into the cash shop yet. This might well be the deal breaker for me. I will not, under any circumstance, buy in-game currency, and I have never bought a game that had an in-game cash shop at the time that I bought it. Bethesda added the Creation Club to Skyrim and Fallout 4 after I bought them. I have not engaged with it. In those games, it was an afterthought, but it is clearly going to be integrated into the game design going forward. A system like this will compromise the game design, as the company will work diligently to steer players into the cash shop. This unfortunate development might finally land Bethesda on my no-buy list. At this point, I might never buy Starfield, Elder Scrolls VI, or anything else that comes along in the future because I don't want to support a company that uses this unacceptable monetization practice. I don't want my single player games to turn into live services that are loaded with hideous microtransactions. Maybe it is time to move on from Bethesda and look for other things.

Todd is the same age as you. I'm similar in age so have seen the many changes in the gaming industry. I agree with you about Todd. I think it's time for him to move on and let some fresh blood lead Bethesda. After the disasters of Fallout 76 and Starfield, I don't understand why Microsoft hasn't insisted on his replacement. I suggest you don't buy Starfield. I bought it 3 months after release when it had already been patched multiple times but it was still the buggiest game I have ever played. Of the first 5 quests I did, I had to console command myself through 3 of them. I don't use console commands unless I have tried everything else first. So many things messed up including my outpost that I ended up going back to my third save and deleting all other saves and basically starting again. I then avoided doing certain things that were obviously broken. I've been playing the last few days because of the new content after not playing for months but the game keeps on crashing when I fast travel. I have no mods and have made no changes other than a couple of console commands to finish unfinishable quests. I don't really think anyone should avoid any particular game developer, because each game a dev makes varies in bugginess and playability. I look at each game on an individual basis whether I want to play it or not by watching YT videos of the game and seeing what players have to say about it on forums. Then I decide to buy it or not. I'm super picky about what games I buy.
@heatherharrison264
@heatherharrison264 2 ай бұрын
@@nessuno1984 I've seen comments similar to yours about Starfield. It is a good thing that I do not pre-order big games like this or buy them soon after launch. Bethesda games always seem to be in a messy state right at launch. They are better after they have been given a few years to cook. If I ever buy Starfield, it will be in a few years, and at a sale price. If the cash shop doesn't become too intrusive, and if some of the worst problems get fixed and modders fill in some of the dull, empty spaces, then it might eventually be worth it. If not, then I'll ignore it, and that will be a sign that I should ignore all future Bethesda games.

@heatherharrison264
@heatherharrison264 2 ай бұрын
@@johnnygolden2914 Bethesda is a big company with a lot of money and supposedly a lot of talent. In what other industry would a product launch as disastrous as Fallout 76 be tolerated by its customers? I've been around long enough to have seen failures and realignments in the automobile industry. Companies that make bad cars get skewered by their customers with no mercy, and car buyers have long memories. To this day, I still default to Japanese brands because American cars were so god-awful back in the 1980s. One of my friends back then had a Plymouth Horizon, which was, and still is, the worst piece of broken-down automotive garbage I have ever had the displeasure to encounter. I remember being surprised every time I saw one running under its own power, which wasn't all that often. Needless to say, I learned to avoid Chrysler products after encountering that piece of crap. If Fallout 76 at launch had been my first Bethesda game, I doubt I would have ever considered buying another one. I get frustrated with gamers for how willing they are to tolerate broken products. From what I hear, Fallout 76 has come back from the dead. I won't play it because I can't stand multiplayer games, but watching it from the outside has been interesting. I'm glad that it has been significantly improved, but it should have been a properly functional and high quality product from the start. A company like Bethesda should have been able to pull off a successful launch. I wouldn't put all of the blame for Fallout 76's initial failure specifically on Todd Howard, but he is a key member of the management team. Whenever there are failures like this, the ultimate responsibility lies with management. United States president Harry S. Truman kept a sign at his desk that read, "The buck stops here." This was his acceptance of ultimate responsibility for everything that went on in the executive branch of the United States government, and he was prepared to take personal responsibility for any failures. (I wish we could get presidents like Truman today.) Management at companies like Bethesda would be well advised to contemplate this statement and make every effort to live up to it. It is important never to let them forget their mistakes; if they step back from their narcissistic delusions and actually listen to criticism, maybe their future performance will improve. If not, then they deserve to go out of business.

You did a good job, a lot of stuff I was interested to learn. Thank you for that interview. I really hope you get to talk to Todd more often, maybe you can even play chess together. And if Todd is lurking in the comments, as a modder who works on a total conversion Fallout 4 mod, thank you very much for supporting the modding community. Not many developers do that. You are the best.

By far the best interview with Todd when it comes to balancing good all around questions, asking about specific topics that a fan would think to ask, making pretty efficient use of time, and clearing up things that fans have been wondering about for awhile. Most interviews just ask the same things like “when is ES6?” And just waste a question. The phrasing and verbiage is everything in these interviews, so excellent job Matty!! You interview is up there with Lex Friedman’s in my opinion!

It’s not quite where I want it just yet but between the potential and the size limit, I know it will get there soon enough. Your hard work, enthusiasm and self awareness have always been something to behold. You deserved this opportunity and knocked it out of the park. Well done dude. I've been here since fallout 3 and yep; seen you grow up, make mistakes, make great content, finish school, move out etc etc. It's been a joy. You've always been a very honest voice as well as thoughtful and reflective. You know how to hype it up, but have learned to keep it cool whilst still being passionate. All rare qualities in this world of sensationalism. Well done, here's to your future dude. 👊

Great Job Matty! That was my favorite interview with Todd Howard to date. You handled yourself quite well, and brought out a much more cam and candid side of Todd. 😎👍

Longtime lurker (probably since Fallout 4s pre release coverage? wow), just want to take a moment and mention I appreciate your balance between positivity and realism. Too many people are to toxic in covering the game industry. You strike the right balance between being passionate about the content but also appreciative of the devs who gave us these iconic games.

Shout out to you Matty, I've been watching your channel for years and years, I'm almost the same age as you so it's pretty wholesome to see how you've been growing as a person and as content creator, cheers to you and here's hoping for more years to come with awesome content!

Over the last few days I've seen outlets and KZbinrs talk about that interview and speaking about you the same way they would speak about any legitimate journalist. If that's not a career landmark, I genuinely don't know what is. Congratulations, Matty!

Matty, I've been watching your videos for a very long time & catching your E3 clips for a hot minute. Some of my earliest videos of yours that I watched were the Fallout 3 ones. I'm not one to usually comment on KZbin videos either. I just hit like/subscribe then keep it pushing. But to wake up and see you finally interviewing Todd....You deserve nothing but a big head for this moment & the incredible journey you've been thru to get here! Good job fam :), This is a moment for everyone here to celebrate with you!

Same reason no other developer does that. It’s a waste of resources. Most people want a new entry, not new chapters in a dated engine/game

I haven't been able to play games much since my daughter was born but I'm hoping to play more again in a few years lol. I will continue to watch your videos and live vicariously off your energy and passion for video games as it's always been my favorite hobby. Keep putting out this great content and I will forever be a fan. Take care of yourself and happy belated birthday Matty 🙂
