My favorite character in LotR is Faramir. I just love his passion for learning and doing what is right even when it's hard, and I'm so touched by his sad longing for his father's love and approval. Plus I love his tender heart that is appalled by war, and yet he is willing to fight to protect the beauty of his city. He is a philosopher in the midst of "men of action". He is a deep thinker who also feels things deeply, and I see myself reflected in him that way.

I find myself a bigger fan of Frodo than Sam for two reasons: Frodo was willing to spare Gollum, and the fact that I don't believe Sam would have been any better than Frodo if he was the one who had to carry the Ring. Frodo was put in a situation that no one else can understand, and I think being willing to subject himself to such evil and what I imagine would give him PTSD, puts him above everyone else in the book.

Puddleglum from The Silver Chair has one of my favorite monologues ever and because he doesn’t think he’s great but he is. Boromir because he is so flawed but flawed for decent reasons. He just wants to serve his people and protect them and ends up showing his honor and bravery. Lupin from Harry Potter because he is the only DADA professor worth anything. Silk from Belgariad because I love his roguish principles and is so funny to me. Long John Silver from Treasure Island because he is such a pirate, and pirates are awesome. Zoro from One Piece, because he is so strong, and determined, and so different from Loofie. Those are some of my favorites. Just from the top of my head. I just received that favor for who I was. Though I can follow you on your opinion of Neville, I would have to say it would be a toss up between Hermione and Dumbledore for me personally. Merphy you are the only person other than me that I know that owns the hardcover doorstop ultimate Calvin & Hobbes collection.

I'm so glad you picked Hoid for Stormlight; so many people see him as an asshole or just too mysterious to be their favourite, but I just love him so much, and you described that feeling perfectly

Add Merlin and Arthur from "Merlin" and I'm in 100% 😂 I know it's not a book but their friendship is my absolute favorite Which also makes me want to read Locke Lamora...

Can I recommend reading/watching Naruto. If you love loyalty, you will love Naruto. It’s a very driving theme. And much character AND plot driven. I think you’d enjoy.

Great to see your honest enthousiasm when you talk about these characters. Not that many that would make my list, but then I havent read as many books as you have. And that you picked Spensa is so great. Actually love her personality in both book 1 and 2 even though it is definitely YA.

My favorite character type is the guy who's funny on the outside but broken on the inside. (like Keefe Sencen from "Keeper of the Lost Cities")

I love that you put Spensa on this list, because I also see myself in her. At least, the part that I tend to show people (Although Cobb and Jorgen are great picks too). I'd probably put Katniss or Peeta on my list, Faramir, Frank Zhang from the Heroes of Olympus series (I have a thing for soft male characters)... I'd have to think more about it to find 10 characters though

I'm surprised Rand and Zuko didn't make the list! I'm so bad at picking fav characters 😭

Hoid is a great pick, there is no one whose story fascinates me more in the series, I'm really drawn to this type of character. Also really looking forward to the Peter Pan review, having recently re-read it. It lands so differently now that I'm older and have kids - I totally understood why you'd be floored by it.

Here's my list. 1: Uncle Iroh/Zuko (ATLA) 2: The entirety of Kilo 5 (The Kilo 5 Trillogy, Halo. I'm a Halo lore fanatic, can't really decide on a favorite character, but Kilo 5 is definitely up there) 3: Dalinar (Stormlight archive) 4: Severo/Darrow (Red Rising anthology) 5: Grand Admiral Thrawn (The original Thrawn Trillogy, Star Wars) 6: Daylen (Shadow of The Conquerer) 7: Faramir (LOTR) 8: Calvin & Hobbes (Calvin & Hobbes) 9: Dilbert (Dilbert) 10: Eustace (The Cronicles of Narnia) I cheated a bunch here as well. If it were my actually top 10, they would almost all be avatar, with a few halo characters, and the 2 from Red rising. Also, keep on mind that these are my favorite. I'm definitally not saying they're the best.
