I have a river birch tree in my front yard. The bark on the lower portion of the tree is very course and doesn't burn very well. However, the bark on the upper portion of the tree is a lot like a regular birch. Occasionally small "sheets" of the bark from the upper portion will fall in my yard and I collect it. It is highly flammable!! Good video.

Like the ZIP and live fire. I like the way the live fire comes packaged. I have use the alcohol pad sin the past. They work great to get the tinder going. All great ideas. Thanks for sharing. I think if you wet your tinder with any flammables like kerosene, alcohol, gasoline even diesel, it will just lite up a lot easier, specially in humid weather.

I carry small hank of waxed jute twine. Works great, and the wax is the extender for the jute. It will burn quite a while. Also, for vaseline cotton balls, take a plastic straw, cut it in lengths about 2-3 inches, roll up your cotton balls in stick them in the straw. Then melt both ends of the straw. It won't leak then, and you can either slit the straaw open to expose the cotton, or of you use a lighter, you can just light the straw and all.

Great demos, my friend! I like to scoop out a big glob of petroleum jelly with my knife and put it in the middle of a cotton round or cotton ball. By using the blade, my hands stay clean. And by sealing the saturated cotton in a container, it doesn't mess up my pack. You can also stuff the finished product into a fat straw and heat seal both ends.

Found 2 bags of Coghlans waterproof fire sticks in the clearance section for like $1 a bag ,of twelve sticks each. Amazingly useful fire starter also found at Walmart and the sticks are quite large and can be broken into so many smaller pieces
@MrTangent4 жыл бұрын
I recommend no one actually rely on Wetfire. Reason: if bag becomes perforated, the cubes dry out and become useless. And it will happen when you most need them.
@MrTangent4 жыл бұрын
I assume the same goes for that Zip, and stuff like Esbit or trioxane. Try doing a follow up video, where you perforate several Zip and/or Wetfire and see if they’ll ignite after a day, then a week, then two weeks, then try a month. I am not sure how long until they become useless (the fuel evaporates)... but they do.

Great vid man. Love that you're using flint and steel instead of a lighter. True survivalist :) I'm not impressed with the Paracord. Seems to be alooot of wasted material and a very short burn time compared to some of the others. Think I'll stick with cotton balls and dry grass :)
@garychap83844 жыл бұрын
Stick with? The point is that you wouldn't cannibalise your straps, belt or zip-pulls if you still had other options. Fire-cord may simply be what you hit when you're out of options and settling in for an extended survival situation. Till then, it costs you nothing ... it's your shoelaces, zip-pulls, belt, lanyard, etc. Question is, why would you have any string or cord on your gear that ISNT also a fishing line, fire-starter, snare/antenna wire, has a high breaking strain and is decomposable into strand. I mean, weight being equal, always go for maximum redundancy and flexibility. Heck, if I could find quick-dry underpants that doubled as a signalling mirror, water purifier and a mosquito repellant - I'd take it, all other things being equal : ) Everything you have should be multi-use where possible. And an enhanced-utility paracord really isn't subject to an either/or decision as it's simply a drop-in replacement for your existing cords and lacings. It doesn't have to be better than a zippo or a ferro... it just has to be better than the string it replaces ; ) and, it undoubtedly is.

Fire, how do I start thee... let me count the ways... Zippo... matches... ferro rod... flint... _(an hour later)_ ... cut the oxide layer from elemental Na or K and expose it to water ... dripping glycerol onto potassium permanganate... shorting a bubblegum wrapper or the metalic strip of a banknote over a battery... polishing the dimpled base of a soda can with toothpaste to a focusing mirror... _(another hour later)_ ... use friction to ignite citrus oils from a hollowed orange... use a half-grape in a microwave to send a hot plasma upwards into a tinderpile... _(another hour)_ ... find a live volcano and poke it with a long stick... emm... find a high place and wait for a lightening strike... ummmm... ... okay, I think I'm done! Oh, no... wait...

Have you tried tampon? I have it in my emergency pack. It fires up very very easy and gives lots of heat and lifetime. Just fluff it up and ignition on... I learnt this from a dedicated survivalist. No joke. all the best to you and nice videowork you did there.
@ghanaboyz3 жыл бұрын
put your hands in a bucket of ice cold water for a good while, then try to open a tampon. Also, I found tampons suprisingly hard to ignite in extreme conditions. My solution was to prepare my fire starting kit for survival situations, including pre-open tampons and mix them with an accelerator (huge difference). While out deeper in the wild, always have several different types of tinders and several differnt types of ignitors. A misstake to rely on one type in my experience.

Nice video! I made my own "Livefire" style starter with an Altoids mini tin... I compressed a bunch of cotton balls into the tin, then mixed up some melted petroleum jelly and melted wax and poured it over the cotton. Works exactly the same, and the wax helps stabilize the PJ so it doesn't run when it gets warm. Use it as a timer to light your kindling, then drag it out and flip it shut. I've used it dozens of times and still works like new!

quercus , the flint on a bic lighter gets crumbly after exposure to water, or even just very high humidity for an extended period. You might get a few lights out of it before it completely falls apart, might not.

Those zip firestarters are like blocks of solid gasoline. They stink and emit noxious fumes even through the wrapping and you’re not even supposed to touch them with your skin. There’s no way I would carry these in my pack. Maybe keep some in the house for an emergency situation but it’s basically like pouring lighter fluid on your cooking fire, I wouldn’t want to get that on my food. I think I’ll stick to more natural methods.The whole point of EDC for me is that it doesn’t cause any safety concerns or have negative effects in these things definitely do not fit that bill. I have some compressed toilet paper that are disks about the size of a Mento and those things go up like flash paper. A tin full of cedar dust, dryer lint and some wax definitely less dangerous than those things.

@ricksundberg56594 жыл бұрын
The birch trees shed that bark, in the summertime it is on the ground around them or else find a branch that has fallen. No need to harm the tree if they are protected.

Not complaining on the man made stuff because I know they work and they are really good product. I just rather not waist my time and money on them. Pretty much nearly all of those fire starters and tenders can easily be made yourself in bulk for a fraction of the price. You can even go full big bulk if you spend the amount of money you spent on those handfuls of fire starters you got from online. Yeah I may not get 100% dead on the exact way they make it because they say "our secret formula blah blah blah" but I can make a pretty damn close replica of pretty much all of those starters. I can even make live fire too. See all those things are just get rich quick items that was being made for years by real camping and bushcrafters. They try to sell to the average Joe Schmo that don't know any better and that goes camping less than once ever couple 2-3 years.

Hmm, no magnesium block ? ... My favorite would be: 1. Birchbark, 2. fatwood, 3. magnesium, 4. Wetfire/tinderquick/etc. 5. home made equivalent of 4. I happen to live in a place where birchbark is plentyfull so it's easier to get than fatwood. Still fatwood is probably a bit more reliable, the magnesium block with the ferrorod strip is just a handy combination and also reliable (but hard to replenish, still you don't need to much), lastly 'wetfire' or tinderquick, or surefire or w/e brand, basically a reliable way to get a fire going, i view these as 'last resort' type fire starters (or fool proof, if it concerns somebody with less experience in fire starting

I don't like the magnesium blocks because it takes so much time to scrape off enough to be useful that I could already have the fire going with something else.
