SM3 gave us the best childhood memories. I had to save my money to buy the game. Kids in school talked about it all about it and when we would read about it in magazines we got excited. Can't forget about The Wizard. Mario brought us all together. Good times.

Super Mario 2 was my favorite among the original Super Mario trilogy. Some people don't like it because it's different from the other 2 games, but I like it for what it is. I also liked the lack of a time limit. It takes the pressure off, and gives you all the time you want to explore.

It wasn’t the game itself that I had a problem with. SM2 was a blast to play. My issue with SM2 was finding out after I finally beat it that the whole game was just Mario’s dream. I hate it when games, shows, or movies do the whole dream sequence as an episode to explain everything.

I liked your comment about Metroid giving you a loney feeling. I think that sense of isolation deep inside an abandoned alien planet is core to why those games are so enchanting. That Metroid music always gives me goosebumps and I think thats why. It could amost take place on the ocean floor in a weird way.

Okay.. who else was a kid when the movie "The Wizard" came out with Fred Savage? Seriously that kid was my childhood in movies and The Wonder Years back in the 90's. A lot of people say "The Wizard" was just a giant promotional ad for Nintendo, but as a kid back then I didn't notice or care. That movie was based all around the NES, and back then the NES was a BIG deal. We didn't get Nintendo Power like other kids did, though. My mother worked her tail off as a Nurse working at two different hospitals making ends meet with no father in the picture and we got an NES at the tail end of it's run but man alive I loved that system. I still do! Anyways.... mentioning Super Mario Bros. 3 will always have to e a #1 in my pick as well, and again I mention the movie "The Wizard" because that was the first time we saw it here in America. If memory serves it took a year or two for it to come out here in the states, and I remember when the commercial came on for it and yes I was still engrossed with "The Wizard" and that game at the end for the final game in the competition took my little brain by storm. The funny thing is I was absolutely terrible at Super Mario Bros. 3 and to this day at 45 years old I have never had a full run through. As a kid I was never able to get past the third world, but man oh man I loved that game. It's funny with this dude mentioning Super Mario Bros. 3 because I was so enamored with it on the movie back then. But honestly Metroid was my favorite game even though I never beat that one either. I'm not very good at NES games to be honest, but back then at 8 years old when Metroid came out I was all about the Space and Fantasy genre. But let's be fair here... what eight year old boy wasn't back then?

Totally agree about Mario 2 and 3. Of course in the 80s we had no idea Mario 2 was a re-skin of another game. We loved that it was different. It was the one of the few games my entire family enjoyed playing. Star Tropics is probably my favourite atmospheric game for the NES. I also played endless hours of Punch Out. I even got to the point that I was able to TKO Tyson in the 1st Round (yes, it is possible). Picking it up thirty years later on my NES Classic, I get utterly mauled once I get past the Minor Circuit (lol). And with my love for adventure / fantasy RPGs, I'm still a huge fan of Ultima: Quest of the Avatar. As far as what has the best mix of nostalgia, as well as something I can still pick up today, my all-time favourite on the NES has to be Faxanadu; a game that was mostly overlooked back in the day, but is now getting a lot of love from retro fans.

I wanted to ask you to quantify your statements about "second tier NES games are better than second tier SNES", guess that's off the table , too? :) EDIT: I did not wanna come off as aggressive, so sorry. I guess people who got the NES in Elemenatary School and the SNES in High School, tend to have a fonder memory of the childhood system. I was 13 when I got my NES and 17 when I got my SNES; and I thought everything was better and more expanded - just like my body/mind :P

This is a good list, a couple of my favorites are Rygar, the original Legend of Zelda and any of the Dragon Warriors are great, as well as any of the Mega Mans for the NES, but probably the 3rd Mega Man is my favorite. Kid Niki and Kid Icarus are also great. SMB3 is a good one and one of my favorites, not sure it would be my #1. Rygar doesn't get enough love, but I don't think a lot of people know how great it is, they also made a Rygar game for the PS2, and that game is one of my favorite games to play on any system.

Not sure I could do a Top 10 for NES, but SMB3 is probably my fave. A few of my other faves are Dejavu, Astyanax, Solomon’s Key, Excitebike, and Metal Storm. Metal Storm is stupidly expensive nowadays, and I have no idea how I ended up with a copy of it but I’ve had it since I was a kid.

I played a lot of Bubble Bobble...on a tiny 12 inch black and white tv. Trying to disambiguate players is a challenge, though not as hard as Dr. Mario on the same tv. Unfortunately, the real ending requires both players to survive the final boss. I could reach and beat the boss by myself, but never got my sister to survive. I never did see the true ending. I also liked Rainbow Islands, sometimes called Bubble Bobble 2. It's a similar "gimmick puzzle" have with wacky levels and enemies.

6:08 The ROM hack titled "Metroid + Saving" includes a scrollable map appearing when the game is paused. It also replaces Metroid’s password system with a saving system, offering three save files. The file selection menu shows the player’s equipment, and as an added bonus, the player’s health is now saved (no need to grind for health every time you resume your game).

As a teen, I didn't feel the game crash. I didn't play home consoles at private school. But in our last year they didn't allow us to bring in our Atari's. So in 1986 or 87, I saw the NES. Blew my mind too! The funny part is, we never knew that we were playing on hardware that was getting long in the tooth in some parts of the world. But in America it felt new and incredible. I like the games on your list. Gyrus and Mario 2, and 3 are wonderful. My list would include Marble Madness, and Star Tropics. I skipped most of the console's after the NES, because I was playing PC video games. When I started collecting, I realized how many games I cheated myself from playing because I believed that PC was the best. But it was fun catching up.

I've been trying to play Megaman for the first time ever this week. That game is brutal. Like Japanese gameshow brutal. I've only beat 3 stages so far. Still got Elecman... Iceman.... Fireman.... then Wiley to go.

Bubble Bobble is probably one of the best 2 player games ever made. Specially the arcade version.

Mario 2 is my number 1 NES game. I'm glad it was on your top 10 at all. I think it's better than all the other Mario games. :D

NIce picks! glad you put some no so common ones in with a few more typical ones. Here's mine! Final Fantasy 1,2 and 3 wich are pretty great RPG adventures. Kick Master was so bad ass. Although there are many other hidden treasures I won't deny Mario and Zelda is some of the best NES has to offer.

I was quite surprised there weren't any Mega Man games on the list. Awesome soundtracks(MM3 is the best!) and lots of different weapons and playstyles to have.

@@GamingTheSystems1 the only thing I can recommend that would make the game a bit easier would just be to download a PDF of the original manual and use the map on the start screen and keep track of where you've been and what you found!

I KNEW MARIO3 would be in there! But I would have replaced LifeForce with Rampage, replace Castlevania with TMNTII, Bubble Bobble would be replaced with NARC.
