Daphnis and Chloe was assigned reading for a class I took in college, and reading it was probably the most enjoyable time I've ever had doing homework. I remember it felt kind of like an Ancient Greek (and more adult) version of Heidi, which I loved as a kid. I'd forgotten the title until Jean mentioned it in one of her earlier videos. I still need to do a reread, but I'm so grateful that it's actually on my list now!

Great video! It's always lovely to hear someone talk about books they love 😊 I read Daughter of the Forest in 2020 after hearing you talk about it and it was soo beautiful! I would have preferred it to be a tad more fast-paced but that's on me because I usually prefer plotty books. Keep the recs coming Jean!

Fabulous video! I can tell that I’ve been watching your videos for a while- I’ve picked up quite a few of these on your recommendation (Terry Pratchett, Oranges are not the Only Fruit, The Penelopiad, Tooth and Claw, and Sherlock Holmes) and there hasn’t been one yet that I haven’t liked, so I’m thinking I’ll have to pick up your other favourites- I have a copy of Eragon lying around so maybe that’ll be the next recommendation I pick up 😁 Thank you so much for sharing your favourites with us, it’s so wonderful to be able to share in someone else’s joy for the things they love!

@voices4oppressed3 жыл бұрын
Haha just kidding mate! 😂😂 Actually it was a book I'm working on The series is called "Age of Men" it is a chronicle that some wise old man By the name of Sir William George will be writing who was also a character in the book about a time long ago in the ancient Age of men, the time of the great descendants of men and the rein of the immortal kings who ruled with absolute darkness...the rule of men; their rise and their fall and all the darkness that men had fought, and had turned into and conquered during the time of all the races of immoral beings and many creatures and what lies of the fate of men and how men struggles against their lust for power and the nobility of some men which may shape the destiny of men and darkness.... It is an Epic fantasy of ten book series in which through it you'll find the ugliness of men, their nobility, their bravery, their sacrifices, their fierce love, their treachery, their vengeful rage, the absolute loyalty, the dark rule of kings, the darkness of evil and the iron hearts that stood in defence of the innocent and stood in defence of love...

SCARLETT LOST IN THE FIVE LANDS is my favourite novel. .It has a female lead who is a warrior princess that loses her memory and enters a different world where society is divided into four different races based on skin colour. The female villain is so intimidating that you would end up loving her. Scarlett the main character, Black Viper, the amazing army general, Marishka, the badass assassin..and Callista, the most powerful female villain i have ever read. Also, there are dragons that lose their power of breathing fire..The battle scene at the end is mind blowing. You will fall in love with SCARLETT LOST IN THE FIVE LANDS. And the best thing is the book is just 170 pages..I completed the book in just one sitting. I had to read it on kindle since paperback was not available in foreign countries. But its ok..I really enjoyed reading the book even on kindle.

I like the sound of the SevenWaters - I'll keep an eye out for Juliet Marillier. I'm too new here to know what you'd like, but I just tabulated my top 10 as best I can (not easy!). 10 The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S.Lewis (I'm surprised how much I wanted to say the Screwtape Letters) 09 Pan's Labrynth by Cornelia Funke (from Guillermo del Toro's movie) 08 Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. LeGuin (still need to read the others) 07 The Book Theif Markus Zusak 06 To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee 05 Death Gate Cycle by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman 04 His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman 03 Dragonlance Chronicles by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman (and their subsequent Dragonlace as well, but that's the focal point where it started and though their prose later improves their enthusiasm is palpable. Plus it's a foundational story for me) 02 The Neverending Story by Michael Ende (be careful what you wish for, but the heart wants what the heart wants) 01 The Lord of the Rings (incl. the Hobbit) by JRR Tolkien (also very foundational, but it always offers more insights)

I love Maggie Furey, she's a great fantasy writer, though since her death her books are out of publication so you'd need to look for them second hand. Her Artefacts of Power series is great. J.V Jones is another 90s fantasy writer I love and if you like strong female characters a great fantasy writer that I discovered last year is Jay Kristoff. I'd love to know if you've read them, and if you do I'd love to know what you think. 😊

I'm reading Daughters of the Forest because of you and Ashleigh. I'm taking forever to read but I love going back to it every time. Like you said, I think the sexual assault was so well handled. It was hard to read but the allusion to the trauma the character experiences afterwards is weirdly so welcome. I also love that we have a vegetarian protagonist in medieval Ireland! Have you read past book 2 of that series? I have a friend who'd probably love the book but she only reads french, and the saga has only been translated up until book 4! WTH! So I'm hesitant to recommend it to her.

Amazing! I am very intrigued by the 'Daughter of the Forest' series. However, i tend to not like series that have 1 book per character because I tend to find it a big predictable in terms of plot. While if they're following the same protagonists you cannot predict as well the evolution of the characters and the plot moves a more unexpectedly because again you cannot predict the arc. Would you say this is the case for the Daughter of Forest series? Also i'm a huge fan, and simple gal if you upload i click no questions asked XD

Jean have you ever read the queen's thief series by Megan Whalen Turner?
