They're not goth but they do have that dark image look so I can see why some people think they're 'goth' but they never said they were nor is their music considered gothic. Lol

Gothic Evil Entries it's not "more metalcore", it is metalcore lol nothing goth about their sound at all. That being said, yes the singer as far as I know stated bands like the cure, joy division, and I think Bauhaus as some music he liked so he probably does enjoy some goth music despite not making goth music.

This whole thing makes me laugh because I'm old and grew up in the 80's. Love that people are arguing about what's "goth" and not. The term goth was not even a common word in those days. Yes I remember hearing it, but mainly it was called new wave. Siouxsie, Bauhaus, the Cure, Echo, JD, Christian Death, DepecheM, the Mary Chain, Smiths, New Order, Sisters, Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil were all very much part of the "darker" side. But, in those days the idea of Yaz playing next to Bauhaus or Erasure on a mix tape with Bad Religion or XTC was not an uncommon thing. It was way less mainstream in those days and anything "alternative" was celebrated with black clothes, a weird haircut and attitude. It's all become so lame now. The thing that is called "Goth" these days is way more indicative of metal. Nowhere near where the original artists intended. History lesson concluded. You may all reply with your hateful comments. I await them with nothing. Cheers
@FrancisMWeber10 жыл бұрын
True. And it wasn't even called "goth" but "cold wave". "Goth" was refering to the "Batcave" music style with such group instances like The Stray Cats. Very funny when you compare to the definition today.
@MysteriousAsteria10 жыл бұрын
It is true that Goth wasn't wildly used in the 80s to describe this music and it was just lumped into the big umbrella term "(New) Wave". However, the usage of the word "Gothic Rock" can be traced back into the late 70s as it was used by the british press to describe the mood and athmosphere of Joy Divions' music (which today aren't even considered as a Goth band but more as its precursors). But nobody used the term outside of media and music reviews until maybe the mid to late 80s (there is some BBC radio show heer on yotube, called "Gothic" dating from 1987 to back it up). But then there were regions where the word hasn't caught on until the mid to late 90s. Where I come from (German speaking area of europe) people didn't like to call themselves Goths, they were known as "Waver". In the end it doesn't really matter when it became named goth. I see labels more as helpful tags that enable you to find similiar bands faster or as a way to connect with people sharing similiar musical tastes; given the label isn't being misuesed as it is now and therefore makes it really hard to find new bands I might like either online or in record stores. The latter often integrate Gothic into the Heavy Metal CD shelf and it's likely that only 20% of the CDs are from actual Wave or Post-Punk groups. And many clubs in Europa started to tag their club events as "Gothic" and "Darkwave", yet play "Industrial", Metal and Techno. I am actually too young to have whitnessed the 80s, but have read a lot on this topic (I am sure you have better expierences with the old scene as me). I personally think this whole mainstream pseudo-gothic thing started in the early 90s, when after Grunge it became suddenly cool and edgy to pretend to be a social Outcast. And most people thought of Goths as stereotypical loners, who hide in their cold cellar to weep about how unfair the world is. The "Industrial" Metal, Nu Metal and "Dark" Electro trend made everything worse as some people thought "if it sounds heavy and the lyrics are full of angst and the bandmembers dress in black then it must be Goth!". That close minded thinking really damaged the music scene. It puzzles me how anyone can think of it as an evolution or progression when a once diverse and huge music movement like New Wave has turned into Pop Punk, Metal and Techno music, which never had to do anything with it in the first place. Nothing against Metal, I really like to listen to it too sometimes (I don't limit myself to just one genre), but it just isn't the same as Wave and Goth and never will be.
@Yiamas10 жыл бұрын
I went to a lot of concerts and did a lot of nightclubbing in the 80's and you're right, I didn't hear the term "Goth" until the end of the decade. Here in the US bands like Bauhaus, Joy Division, Sisters of Mercy, Specimen, Dead Can Dance, Cabaret Voltaire etc. were loosely referred to as "Artpunk" and then "Death Rock" but most people who listened to that kind of music didn't really care about labels or being exclusively part of one 'scene' back then.. Everything from Einsturzende Neubaten to Yello was lumped together into the category of "College Rock" because for years College Radio stations were the only places you could hear those bands on the airwaves. New Wave was a term invented by the record labels to promote bands like The Talking Heads, Blondie, Devo and others out of the original New York Punk scene. (Yes, those bands used to be called punk in the late 70s) However, the term Punk had a bad rep in the mainstream as violent etc. so the labels figured "New Wave" would sell better and they were right. It became a catch all phrase for any commercial electronic pop.
@FrancisMWeber10 жыл бұрын
Original Goth came from the Batcave club in London which was open from 1982 to 1985, and where rock and rockabilly groups started to produce first. The darker sound was introduced by bands like Bauhaus and was great to fit the place. Batcave became a genre which once mixed with post-punk and other influences became goth music. Dark became darker, borrowed Robert Smith fashion style (The Cure was not especially goth), and themes derived from vampires, creatures and stuff. Christian Death and Fields of the Nephilim were among the first to move their lyrics towards mystic satanism - though it already existed before - see Marc Almond and Soft Cell for instance. Bauhaus, Siouxsie, etc. remained borderline and addressed other, more standard topics. SoM totally recused being associated with goth and got booed at some of their concerts, though they are one of the most iconic and best dark rock groups of that period imho. Much later artists like Marylin Manson redefined themselves as goth (though the music style isn't the same at all) based on the satanism references, but this is totally a different story.
@Lunatic4Bizcas10 жыл бұрын
I'm from the same generation and I mostly agree with you. Here in the States especially, a distinction between bands and fitting them into categories didn't really occur, because most of the bands that were 'left of the dial' to coin a song title from The Replacements, were considered New Wave. Back in the 80's, there were your top 40 formatted hard rock stations that would play the same period's 'Metal/' Hard Rock bands, which later included all the ridiculous Hair Bands. Then there were the other radio stations, which were much fewer that would play a lot of period U.K bands and U.S 'college rock.' Although technically, these bands varied, it seemed that they were all pretty much lumped under the term New Wave or 'Post Modern' rock. I remember hearing the word Alternative thrown around, but I don't think that really came into being until 1990.
