I get weird looks when I put it in my top 10 favorite horror films list. It’s the very definition of a horror movie with a Sci-Fi twist rather than a supernatural one. It has all the hallmarks of a slasher movie but they’re all done to perfection. You have an unstoppable killer that doesn’t show emotion for a justified plot reason that makes the killer genuinely terrifying. You have a phenomenal final girl in Sarah Connor who never feels too helpless to the point of annoyance but not too strong that it feels forced and unrealistic for a waitress to be badass. She has to use what she has learned and her wits to win. The nudity and sex in the movie are one of the few instances I can think of where it is necessary for the plot. It shows the T-800 is a force to be reckoned with even when he’s at a complete disadvantage for a normal human. It puts Kyle Reese in a relatable underdog position where he has to use his wits to survive. The sex scene is the culmination of Sarah and Kyle’s relationship and the thing that leads to the birth of John Connor and closing the time loop as we know it in T1. To not call it horror feels like an insult to horror. Like “horror can’t be this good.” It’s the same issue people tend to raise when Hannibal Lecter properties are classified as thrillers or when modern movies call themselves “elevated horror.” Just like any genre, horror can be schlocky but it can also be great art.

I think it could be viewed that way today but it definitely doesn't resemble any slasher film from that era. People also say the same about the original Alien.

Yep. Friday the 13th is such an unusual franchise. The first movie honestly kinda sucks. It gets remembered as a classic because it started the franchise and it has Kevin Bacon in one of his first roles. However, there’s a reason that Sean S Cunningham really never went on to do anything else of note. He’s just not that great of a storyteller or director. Carpenter went on to make over a dozen great movies after Halloween. Wes Craven made numerous classics within the horror genre after Elm Street (and that also came out after Last House on the Left). I think Friday the 13th Part 2 is better all around, and we don’t even get the iconic Jason until Part 3. I often just skip Part 1 when I watch the movies. It would have been weird if 4 was the last one considering that we would have only had the iconic Jason for 2 movies if it was the last one. My personal favorite is Part 6. Part 2 is scarier than the original imo, and it had the best final girl

Not even the best in its own series imo. As for Evil Dead 2 it’s a film that took me on a wild ride when I was younger. It really catapulted me into the horror genre. I adore the film and its one of my favorites of all time. I respect your stance on the film because I can totally see the blend of horror & comedy not working for people. Especially if you’re partial to the ones that lean more towards the horror side. I think another one I adore that didn’t work for you was Big Trouble In Little China. I love it for how insane it is. Which I totally understand why others wouldn’t, I love talking movies to see different perspectives.

As someone who really enjoyed Salvation (and to a lesser extent, Genisys), I appreciate your breakdown of Dark Fate. My issue is more one of internal consistency / time loop reasons: how could John Connor have sent Kyle Reese back in time if he got killed? I can get past the creative choice and enjoy the new story direction, but it’s just hard for me to get past how it “unmakes” the first movie.

Obviously a lot of people hate that John Connor was killed off, just to be replaced with a Mexican girl. Why? Why do that? Is it to reset the franchise and tell a fresh new story? Nope because Dark Fate is basically just the exact same movie as T2 but changing the sex of the 'hero' and changing the name of Skynet to Legion. It adds nothing new to the story. Personally I don't mind killing off John Connor or indeed Newt and Hicks dying off screen for Alien3, as long as you have a reason to do so and can add to the overall storyline and have a reason for it. Alien3 is a mess but Ripley is the main character of the franchise and it gave a decent end to her story arc (sacrificed herself). Dark Fate adds nothing so I can totally understand why people see it as disrespectful to the character of John, and an example of Hollywood's current obsession with ruining male movie legacy characters to replace them with females (Disney star wars, Indiana Jones, all recent Marvel releases etc). That side of things I am not super bothered about eitherway, but what I do really dislike about Dark Fate is it's total lack of new ideas. It literally doesn't need to exist, it does nothing story wise that wasn't already done in T2. It feels a cynical cash grab that banked on the return of Linda and Arnie to trick fans into seeing it, without actually bothering to write a movie that justifies existing. At least Salvation and Genesis tried to do something a bit different and didn't just photocopy T2.

@@politefan8141 Yeah Linda Hamilton is the best thing about it. I saw it the day it came out, in the cinema, hadn't seen any reviews of anything and was looking forward to it. Finally a Terminator sequel with Linda and Arnold in, plus it has James Cameron listed as one of the writers and producers, surely this is gonna be what we have all been waiting for ever since T2! I left the cinema feeling very annoyed afterwards. Like Cody's Madame Web review I just felt it was not acceptable and simply not good enough. To just phone in a photocopy of T2's story after getting Linda and Arnie back one final time is frankly insulting to them and insulting to the fans. They spent nearly 200 million but couldn't come up with an original story? Ridiculous.

Fantastic video, loved the insight and I pretty much agreed with everything you have said. One thing on NOES, although I agree with your comments around an unknown to take story forward, as long as the writing is good, which is the most important thing. Also a half decent director with a good vision will help. I would really like to see Kevin Bacon take over the role. I've heard rumours of this years ago which I could really see working. Whether he would take on is another matter.

You're on-track about the horror/comedy balance being exactly the thing Evil Dead's fans most appreciate about the movie. Binge Return Of The Living Dead, Dead Alive (Braindead in New Zealand), Reanimator, and Evil Dead 2 with friends & beer in one focused Splatstick Horror/Comedy weekend and it may help crystallize your understanding & appreciation of the subgenre. Maybe do it in the reverse order stated above, though, if you want an escalating-quality experience. I swear ROTLD gets better each time i watch it over the years.

Camp Crystal Lake is a great setting, the music is iconic, the kills are memorable and Betsy Palmer is fantastic as Pamela Voorhees despite only appearing in the final act. I'm a huge horror geek, and even though I disagree with some of your hot takes, I really do see where you're coming from when you explain your reasoning. Like, for instance, Evil Dead 2 is my fave, I think the balance of horror and comedy is perfect, but I also love the 2013 reboot/sequel, and Evil Dead Rise, I also love the 1st entry, and Evil Dead 3 is also near perfection. Child's Play 1 was my first horror film I watched in full on the Sci-fi Channel back in 1991, I was 7 years old, but Child's Play 2 is my fave, and CP 3 is an amazing movie, first time the FX guys used computer programming to move the chucky doll around the set. Halloween 2, you may be on an island, but I love the brutality in that movie. Anyway, sorry about the essay, lol. And I agree that the first F13 isn’t great, but I personally have a hard time calling it bad. It’s an unapologetic rip off in many ways, but the kills were pretty revolutionary for the time, the music and atmosphere are pretty great, and it kicked off the camp/forest setting for horror. I’ve never seen the Rob Zombie Halloween 2, so I can’t comment on that. I also had a very similar experience with Season of the Witch. The only reason I watched it when I did was because it was on a DVD set with Halloween II that I found at Best Buy when I was a kid. I honestly didn’t even intend to watch it, I just wanted Halloween II. At this point, I prefer it to Halloween II. I also think that Child’s Play 3 kind of did reinvent the wheel a bit. Like with your Terminator take, which I agree wholeheartedly with, I'd phrase it like "It's an action film with the skeletal structure of a slasher" (haha get it cus cyborgs lmao). However some ppl will always take things the wrong way, or only listen to ya in bad faith, regardless of how you phrase it oof Love your work, Cody!! P.S. I'll say this about the original Exorcist: to me, the film is far more terrifying on a subconscious/subliminal level that it is outwardly scary X3 (That possessed Reagan make-up tho will always haunt me cus of that damn Scary Maze game lmao) The Exorcist III definitely works a lot more for me on both levels; like you said, it does a way better job at getting under your skin, and the scares legit got me the first time I watched it 🥶 I think Exorcist 3, along with In Dreams, Dolores Claiborne, the original Cube and The Cell are great entryways into psychological horror X3

Here are 4 of my more unpopular movie opinions: 1. I think Michael Bay has a lot more talent than people give him credit for Explanation: Of course he made the nonsensical Transformers sequels, but he’s done a lot of films I quite enjoy and there’s a bunch of his movies that have more to offer than just massive spectacle and jokes aiming for the lowest common denominator. 2. I kind of love Halloween III: Season of the Witch for the movie it is Explanation: It doesn’t make any sense in the Halloween franchise, but if you can remove the Halloween name from this film, I think it’s a highly enjoyable horror film from the early 80’s. 3. I’m not specifically a big fan of Middle Earth Explanation: Don’t get me wrong The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is a fantastic trilogy that I enjoy every time I rewatch them, but they’ve never been personal favorites of mine, even though I really only have very positive things to say about them 4. I love Terminator: Dark Fate and think it’s safely the best Terminator film since T2 Explanation: While I’m well aware that a lot of people hate Dark Fate with a passion, I love the way it builds out the Terminator lore, expands the character of Sarah Conner, finds a new angle to explore Arnold as The T-800, and I think it has great action. If you disagree, that’s okay! That’s the beauty of being film fans!

I was pleasantly surprised with your number 2 hot take, in the fact that I agree with your assessment. Evil Dead 2 is probably my second least favorite movie in the franchise, ahead of Army of Darkness, which is my least favorite. Maybe it's just a preference thing, but I like the more serious toned movies in the franchise, that are more focused on the horror and despair aspect, instead of the comedy/slapstick, which feels completely out of place to me. Don't get me wrong, Army of Darkness is hilarious, but not Evil Dead to me. I can also empathize with people, and understand their reasonings why they enjoy Evil Dead 2. I think that from a comedy angle, ED2 has funny moments that I laugh at, but it isn't Evil Dead to me, because it was a horror comedy, and not a straight up psychological, supernatural isolation horror movie like Evil Dead 1, Evil Dead 2013, and Evil Dead Rise.

Yeah someone spoiled scream 1 for me unfortunately but I also think the killer reveals in scream 2 really work and thought the studio scene was the scariest (not best but scariest imo) in the franchise. Evil dead 2 is by far the best of the series, and I think 90 percent of the world agrees so yeah definitely a hot take, but I like that you actually explain your reasons why you feel that way to many people don’t.

I feel like original evil dead is even more legendary honestly. It's a straight up horror flick

I agree with the hot take on Nightmare on Elm Street. Everyone said the Joker could not be redone with someone other than Jack Nicholson, then we got Heath Leager Joaquin Phoenix and Mark Hamil... But just has to be done right or you end up with Jared Leto.

I actually agree with a lot of these hot takes (especially the Exorcist III and Halloween III takes) and have had them for years as well, but I also love hearing the explanations for the ones I don’t and understand completely why you have them. My hot take is that I love Jason X. Nostalgia aside, it knows exactly what it is and that self-awareness makes it extremely enjoyable for me. It’s one of my favorite good bad movies and I’ll take it any day over most of the series for the goofiness of it. Even the bad effects don’t offend me, and I’m one of the biggest critics of them because of my line of work. It’s like a Taco Bell flick; it’s cheap, it’s crappy quality, and you know it’s bad but damn is it a guilty pleasure.

I didn’t vote on your poll that you did because I had a hard time picking. I agree with all of your “hot takes”. This video was very validating for me lol

I absolutely love hot takes 🔥 Even if they piss me off, I remind myself that film is a form of art which is subjective. There is a lot of nostalgia tied to movies for us movie lovers. If everyone had the exact same opinion, we would get bored pretty quick. Nice vid Cody

Mine is that eXistenZ is one of Cronenbergs very best movies. Seems a lot of people have it as a middle or even low tier one and I don’t get that. Such an interesting world in that film Edit: Oh yeah also Splatter is a horror/exploitation subgenre that is WILDLY overhated. I get there’s a lot of brainless crap in that genre, but with movies like Ichi The Killer that absolutely justify a ton of gore in the movie, there’s plenty of splatter worth watching if you can stomach it.

It’s kinda the last of the classic Cronenberg era before he went primarily to dramatic works (till returning to body horror with “Crimes of the Future”). I enjoy the world building it sets up and Jennifer Jason-Leigh & Jude Law really work off each other well. Plus the final twist leaves a great cliffhanger

@@LucyLioness100hard agree with everything you said, also some of the weirdest effects he’s ever had in a movie of his, which is obviously really saying something. I think it’s one of the few Cronenberg movies that could really benefit from a sequel (done by his son would be cool considering how much Brandon’s films resemble eXistenZ at points)

I applauded the balls it took to kill John Connor in T:DF. It really played into the "The future is not set. There is no fate but what we make for ourselves" message.

My hot take has always been that Michael Myers should’ve died in Halloween 2 and the rest of the franchise should’ve gone with the anthology idea from Halloween 3.

Great hot takes Cody, loved the way you backed them up with your thoughts and opinions. It's amazing when people understand all art is subjective.

My hot take: I don't enjoy watching ANY of the Indiana Jones movies. I didn't grow up with them and when I did sit down to watch them I was checking my watch and bored most of the time. Granted there are great moments but overall I'm not a fan. Nothing against anyone who is but they're just not for me.
