I'm so delighted that I was able to see Barbenheimer on the big screen. It was THE cultural event of 2023. Past Lives was also fantastic, and I hope that it sweeps awards season.

This is why I love your channel. I'm a guy and our film tastes are very different (except for studio ghibli films), but you don't give in to the dumb "cinephile" mentality, where movie "lovers" only love the films people tell them to love, pretty much a contradiction of itself. You're very honest with the films you actually love, and although only two of your top ten films would be on mine, it has nothing to do with what films EYE thought were top ten, because it's YOUR list and your very honest and unapologetic for it. You're what I think an ACTUAL cinephile should be, someone who genuinely loves films, not blends in with the common opinions.
@cinemoni Жыл бұрын
I actually appreciate this comment so much. I’ve been trying to be less on twitter cause I found film twitter to be kind of toxic, it always brings my mood down when i read takes on there. Everyone should unapologetically enjoy the movies they enjoy without relying on the opinions of others. Thanks again for your comment!! I’m glad you enjoy my content and appreciate our different tastes in certain films! 💕
@Weasel_oo Жыл бұрын
@cinemoni Absolutely agree. Twitter movie "fans" are miserable, which is why I deleted my account on there altogether. Keep on making good stuff because your love for film definitely shows and inspires others to do the same!!

Idk. I feel like her picks this year are quite normie from the cinephile perspective.😅 It's basically 90% similar to every top ten list from film KZbin. It's not necessarily a bad thing as it means films like poor things or past lives or anatomy of a fall are universally acclaimed. But it feels kinda tired after seeing over 15 lists and they are 80% the same😅
@kash9854 Жыл бұрын
Completely agree, this is my first video I’ve seen of hers, but it was refreshing to see a couple movies I haven’t heard anyone talk about, and she left off a movie that I’ve seen on everyone’s list that to me was just okay. Not that I need anyone to agree with my movie tastes, but very refreshing.
@user-tp9ik9lx2b Жыл бұрын
I think her list is pretty mainstream film fan. Not knocking it. I have a very similar top 10, but it overlaps with many movie lovers that aren't action/blockbuster bros or super obscure obnoxious fans.

Yess I agree so much! Past lives is such a human film that really makes you reflect on "what if" There are a lot of these films I want to watch, especially The Boy and the Heron and I definitely need to explore poor things and the hold overs. I think one of my favourites this year though was the Society of Snow (i think it's released on netflix on the 4th of jan but it's really worth it to watch in theatres if you can) it was such a hard film but the way the themes were explored is so beautiful and heart-breaking, it's one of those films that stays in your mind for a long time after watching it! Happy New Year!!❤❤❤❤

I don't know wheter you've watched The Peasants, but If not, I highly recommend it. It's an adaptation of Władysław Reymont's Nobel Prize-winning novel of the same name. It's actually an animation, where every frame was hand-painted, and among these frames are hidden famous art works. Music, vibe and storytelling are amazing. And even though I'm not into history films, I've truly enjoyed it. It's a masterpiece for me.

Across the Spider-Verse and Godzilla Minus One were also great crowd-pleasing blockbusters, and I really enjoyed Past Lives and Asteroid City. Also I'm glad to see some love for Are You There God? It's Me Margaret, such an underrated film in my opinion. I didn't get to see Killers of the Flower Moon, I haven't got around to Boy and the Heron yet, and I'm still waiting on Priscilla, Poor Things and The Holdovers to release here in the UK. I dont want "perfect" movies. And Ive started to ignore people who analyze things to d-word. They dont go to a concert and EXPERIENCE it, but film it, instead. They dont EXPERIENCE the movie. They overanalyze it, and end up getting tired and bored with it BECAUSE they dont dwell in the moment of it. They think it, they dont FEEL it. They analyze it, they dont fall in love with it. If I could give the generations after me, anything, it would be a sense of genuine magic, and belief in things beyond science. Not for the sake of any religion, or stuff like that, but because I see people, and its like theyre missing a piece of their own humanity. A piece I cant explain to them with words. A piece that they should have. Not you, Monika, you get it. I know that from things you say sometimes. And I think also, for the reasons Einstein said. Yeah, he was a d-bag to his first wife. I didnt like that. But the man had his moments. Have a nice 2024 Monika and everyone!

My expectations were too high when it opened, but "Barbie" has gotten better the more I think about it, and this is a staple of all the Greta Gerwig films: you end up thinking and feeling and your sense of humanity expands. Mount Horsemore will never not be funny. Thank you for including "Are You There God It's Me Margaret", which has been insultingly absent from the awards conversation! I didn't end up seeing any films that could replace this one as my personal no. 1 pick for the year, because every performance and every story element added up to such a spiritual experience (appropriate since God is in the title). I could rant about it for hours. "Oppenheimer" was of course a healthy dose of Nolan. It's good to see Cillian Murphy bring the same subtle brilliance in a lead role as he has to the smaller characters Nolan has given him. Pairing him with Emily Blunt worked better than I expected. "Poor Things", "The Holdovers" and "Past Lives" still haven't shown up in my city, and I am mad. A24 has kept its quirky track record through 2023, but I admit to passing on "Priscilla" due to being put off from Elvis biopics and anything Elvis-adjacent. The trend feels disingenuous in a way I can't explain. I'll take your word that Sofia Coppola delivered, especially if her "Virgin Suicides" and "Lost in Translation" side resurfaced.
@cinemoni Жыл бұрын
I understand the Elvis burnout, I wasn’t a huge fan of Baz Lurhman’s film last year but Priscilla was such a refreshing take on an Elvis adjacent film. Of course Elvis was in it but it didn’t even feature his music or him performing. I hope thos A24 films show in your city!

Long-belated update: "The Holdovers" and "Poor Things" eventually arrived in late January / early February. "Poor Things" ended up posing a challenge to "Are You There God It's Me Margaret" for my top spot, and upon further reflection it's a tough call.

I thought past lives was average, I don't really see why it's best picture level. At the very beginning they tell you she cries over nothing, she's too emotional, so when she cries at the end.... she's just being overemotional. However now I want to see Anatomy of the Fall My favorite movie of the year was spiderman across the spiderverse .... and I feel so bad that I don't think it's gonna be nominated for best picture

Why you have a picture of All of us Strangers in your wall if you dont have it in your top 10 or even top 14

Didn’t like Priscilla. The filmmaking was amazing i just found Priscilla’s actual story to be kinda boring and pointless. I don’t feel like her story really mattered so much to have to be told in a form of a movie.

I wouldn’t describe Passages as entertaining or funny. It deals with some heavy topics and infidelity. Just putting this out there in case anyone wants to check it out. It is worth a watch, but just know it’s more of a drama with a serious tone.
