The creators of Ballionaire consider their game a roguelike, maybe you should try it out one day :DD

Spiritfall, Astral ascent full release (I know it came out last November but finally got around to playing it in January) Astrea, Balatro, Hades 2. And even updates to games that came out in previous years this year. Void rains, Risk of rain 2 may have had a controversial dlc but I still loved it. It’s been an amazing year for Roguelikes and next year is also looking so good with that SLAY THE SPIRE 2 COMING REAL SOON. My favorite one of the year was easily Spiritfall, a love at first sight/play kind of game EDIT: can’t forget about WINDBLOWN, being playable late into the year and wow if the early access is proving to be a masterpiece then I cannot wait for the full game!

Party House, part of UFO50, is so good, it’s crazy it’s just tucked in as 1 of 50 games in the pack Also, Spelunky 2 is the best roguelike game ever. You should play it.

I'm sorry but my biggest gaming pet peeve is when people don't know the difference between Roguelike and Roguelite...It happens too often in Top 10 lists. There was no Roguelikes in this list.

Shogun Showdown is much better than Balatro, the most overrated roguelite deckbuilder ever. It's good at convincing normies who'd never give this genre a shot but is mechanically shallow due to the inherent playable hands mechanic and your starting deck is the most bloated out of all deckbuilders due to it being based on a rl card game. The game has practically zero pathing, severe balancing issues, and horrible RNG reliance for the first few antes. I got into this genre through both of these games and still playing Shogun Showdown while also playing Slay The Spire and Astrea (also bought Alina) but bounced off Balatro after a few days bc its mechanics simply lack the depth and engagement I like once I become more experienced and invested in the genre.

I disagree of Balatro being shallow; it's still deep with different playstyles due to Joker mechanics and ever shifting tactics, but I do agree that Shogun Showdown is the better game and is my top roguelite of 2024. Basically 1D mix of Into the Breach and Fights in Tight Spaces. Very tactically engaging, the practically infinite combo set up you can have with enhanced tiles, and incredibly well-balanced mechanics.

just admit that you suck playing Balatro

@@DonkeyAndy It's shallow compared to other roguelike deckbuilders and definitely does not deserve to be considered in the same tier as Slay The Spire. It's basically baby's first roguelike deckbuilder and even then I think games like Shogun Showdown are way better as an entry point. Both of them have some similarities as an approachable entry point for people who aren't traditionally into this genre. They both don't "play" like typical games in the genre and massively simplify a lot of the deckbuilding and pathing aspects. I think Balatro's main issues are the ones I outlined: bloated starting deck which makes the RNG even more insufferable than usual, small number of viable strategies bc of the concept of playable hands, and it has insane reliance on relics management instead of deckbuilding. In successful runs, you often get powerful too quickly in a run and having ~5 Joker slots at base and 52 starting cards shoehorns you into specific builds which means you're playing the same hand every single time. So it makes it feel even more like the "roguelike generator" specifically put that ante boss there to end your run if you don't get a new build or manage to find the reroll item. When you're not able to play a specific hand you built up for, you're getting closer to losing. It's like the reverse of actually technically polished deckbuilders like Slay The Spire and Astrea where you can improvise based on what you get from the draw, while still having powerful builds that rely on a certain play style. Its design is inherently flawed and shallow when you break it down beyond the basic psychological effects of "big numbers go up make me feel good". I'm not denouncing people who like this game, I'm just stating the fact that it's mechanically shallow and it's okay to enjoy a shallow game. I find it questionable that it's being called the best game or best roguelike deckbuilder after Slay The Spire.
