There's a reason why so many of these Capcom fighters on the Dreamcast have gone up in value. They are essentially arcade perfect copies.

Capcom vs snk 2 and street fighter 3 were a tad bit better on PlayStation 2 other than That Dreamcast had the better ports usually for 2d fighters. I think in terms of capcom fighters Dreamcast had a ton. If we’re talking in general ps2 has much more fighters. The only ps2 fighters for capcom that was on ps2 and not on Dreamcast were capcom fighting evolution which was just decent. And then street fighter ex3 which I never played yet and I think that was about it 😂 I play cvs2 and sf3 on ps2 but those are on Dreamcast as well so there not unique to ps2. But snk, Namco, midway and other companies were killing it. King of fighters series for me was at its prime on ps2, tekken series, soul calibur series, guilty gear x2 and accent core, bloody roar 3 and 4, virtual fighter 4 evolution, mortal kombat series. Dragon ball z fighting games were in there prime. But for some reason capcom abandon fighter after capcom fighting evolution. Now capcom was killing it with adventure games but they abondend fighters but then returned with sf4

@@armorwolf7934 No, Capcom vs SNK 2 was better on Dreamcast. The PS2 port ran faster than the arcade version (which actually affects he game's meta), and had censorship (no blood, religions references removed, etc). It's better than the GameCube and Xbox ports, but the Dreamcast port was arcade perfect.

Didn't power stone lack an actual "tournament" progression or story? I feel like I remember playing it as a "pick your fighter, pick your opponent" setup and that one minor irritation has always been enough for me to dislike a fighting game, it's petty, but it's kind of the unspoken standard in my opinion. Or maybe my brain is fried and i just made that up or am confusing it with another title.

@@fistfullofglass Power Stone 1 and 2 was just like any other arcade fighting game. It wasn't a household name like the Street Fighter and Marvel vs Capcom but it was still a fun game to play and probably one of the first fighting games to utilize full 360 fighting arenas or stages.

The DC is just console perfection - it literally covers every genre that was popular at the time. I absolutely knew SC would be number one - when you talk about what a "next gen" experience actually is, then flash back to 1999 when you would see SC running on a kiosk. There is absolutely NO WAY you were not blown away by the visuals. It was eons ahead of the arcade version, and as you said, still blows away in 2020. In fact, I dare say the DC era is the last console era that "wowed" me. That true next-gen advancement has never been so powerfully obvious in any subsequent console release since.

When it comes to fighters on saturn and DC I say both systems are equal with the choices that are out there to play. however for DC the main problem with games from capcom and SNK comes from not having a good controller or arcade stick to use when playing them since the standard DC controller has a terrible D pad and the and the controller only having 4 face buttons. I have several of the games you showed in the video but it's really hard me to play them since the DC controller just makes it impossible for me to play properly so they sadly mostly go untouched unless I can get an actual good controller with 6 face buttons and a proper D pad.

100% agree, the music in Marvel Vs Capcom 2 has no place in a fighting game. Also, the sound effects I think were mono. And yes, Soulcalibur on Dreamcast was phenomenal. (and yes that's a friend cosplaying as Taki in my KZbin avatar) Anyway, its a shame both series have strayed so very far from what made them so great in the first place. Although they screwed it up royally, Namco at least tried to get back to basics with the story in SCVI. Sadly the gameplay also failed to recapture the magic that made this series so great.

I want a Capcom vs. SNK 3 or a Rival Schools sequel/reboot so bad, but I very, *very* little faith in Capcom's fighting game division. The last 20 years has shown Capcom could care less about any of their fighting franchises not named Street Fighter or the Vs. series, the latter of which they shot in the face with Infinite. Akira may be coming to SFV, but she's probably going to be a shell of her former self and Rival Schools will probably stay as dead as Darkstalkers. MvC2 is a part of my childhood, but I feel like that's the lazy one out of the Vs. series.

I remember when MvC2 came out. The roster was amazing but the graphics took a step backwards. The sprites were smaller and looked terrible compared to the previous game. The 3d backgrounds were boring and the pastel color palette was bad. The music grew old quick too. Still the giant roster and the way you unlocked it made it the best in the series for me. Maybe when they release it on the current gen they can adress those issues instead of just a port. If they can make it lpok as good as dragonball fighterz I'll be in fighting heaven.

This was really cool to watch. Wow! I will admit, the dreamcast console really had alot/too many great fighting games. I'm glad to see Virtua Fighter and Soul Calibur in that list. And that Soul Calibur game on the dreamcast, is still said to be literally the best game, in the entire Soul series. The overhyped Soul Calibur 2 with Link, Heihachi and Spawn is nice, "but to be real," Soul Calibur 2 was always heavily criticized, as being a babyish, nerfed down, tons of moves and mechanics missing, poor mans version, of the dreamcast Soul Calibur 1 game. And the movement and sidestepping in SC2 is really horrible. Moves miss you and you still get hit lol. It's kinda disappointing that namco went that direction with Soul Calibur 2. But at least dreamcast owners, were blessed to get Soul Calibur 1 on the dreamcast. And the motion capture and gameplay in SC1 are really amazing. I agree with what you wrote in the summary about mvc2. Because I myself prefer MvC1, alot more than MvC2. The characters were also actually more complete in mvc1, and in the previous cross over games. But in mvc2, alot of moves are missing. And the music in mvc2,.......... is not bad but lol, that's the sort of music my grandparents listen too! But at least it's kinda catchy and capcomishly unique.👍😂 Good to see Plasma Sword, KOF and Rival Schools up there.👍 When it comes to fighters, I would say that both saturn and dreamcast wins. Both consoles had what the other console didn't have. And nice work making this cool vid dude.👍

They didn't even mention MVC1, or PowerStone. When I first saw DOA2 running, I had a hard time believing it was all running in real time, particularly the cinemas. Also, the lack of load times was something that I still find amazing to this day. The stages transition to new areas seamlessly, as do the next matches. It's just all so slick, it looks like it is running on the Dreamcast effortlessly. It was one of the first games I ever played that simply made no compromises based on hardware limitations. No loading, no popping in textures, no blinking polygons. Great video. Brought back a lot of memories from my DC days when I was living in Japan. Loved Soulcalibur, DOA2, Cap vs SNK, and Marvel vs Capcom 2 as far as fighters go. Never had any of the others mentioned and now I see I missed out on quite a bit.

@@SegaLordX Thanks for Clarification. I always wanted a Neo Geo, but the systems and games are very pricey! And it seems like most if not all of the Neo Geo games are ported or emulated to other systems like the Dreamcast, PS4, etc. And for much cheaper! 👍

All of these games are awesome, but it was DOA2 which finally convinced me to buy a DC because of the impact of the attacks. Tecmo timed the animations and sound effects so well that you could almost 'feel' the hits from weak punches to full body slams. This is something which Itagaki put extra emphasis on and after he left Team Ninja the DOA series lost that visceral combat feel.

Lets See...on my Asian DC I had MvC, SFZ3, Star Gladiator 2, Power Stone, and Kikaioh. I didnt get Soul Calibur upon release as my friend had a copy for his DC. I wound up getting the 2nd release of DOA2 import because they were supposed to improve the graphics from the USA release. The releases on DC were so awesome that they released the Dreamcast compilation of the King Of Fighters Nests' Saga for import PS2. Amazing!!

Not on this list but I definitely enjoyed the first Capcom vs SNK on the Dreamcast. The game has lots of replay value to keep it going, you can collect EX points and spend them in the shop to unlock EX characters, secret characters, new game modes etc.

I'd say it's close for actual games. When it comes to controllers the Saturn wins outright whether it be pad or stick. So for me Saturn edges it That said get both :)

Aw, no love for Tech Romancer? That was one of my favourites. Kinda surprised 3rd Strike didn't make the cut! Also I know I'm in the minority but I preferred CvSNK 1 if only for the shop. Much like Marvel 2, I spent dozens of hours grinding to get shop points to unlock characters, stages and music and loved every minute of it!

Great choice of first place fighter. Soul Calibur still remains impressive today, and gameplay is always winner to me! Somehow i can't get used to the graphics of Marvel VS Capcom, as the sprites are low res, and the background high res. I wish they upped the resolution of the fighters to match the background, and if that would push the system to far, lower the resolution of the background and upper the resolution of the fighters to meet halfway. Now for me, it looks like some cartoon flat characters are fighting in a different game's background drawn in 3D.

I really didn't know if Street Fighter 3 would be the top choice - as it is, I agree with your list for the most part. One question: given the limitations of the Dreamcast controller, did you use a specialised controller for the games needing 6 buttons as a necessity? I didn't enjoy SFA3 on the PS1 as much as on the Saturn due to the controller, so I'm not sure I'd want it on the Dreamcast either

Great video! Man, the Dreamcast had 20 or so awesome fighting games -- I still cycle through and play most of them from time to time today! If it can be counted as a fighting game, I rate Power Stone 1 very high just for its fun factor. I have played that game so much with friends over the years. Outside of the top 10, there are some really fun games as well that I still play a lot despite their flaws -- most notably Tech Romancer/Kikaioh, and Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram. Those two games (alongside Project Justice) are about the most archetypal late 90's super-Japanese game experiences we got over in North America... and since I was deep in the anime scene at the time, I just ate that stuff up.

Then a close friend of mine bought one and said "you've got to see this" so a group of friends and I were at his house and were playing power stone, virtua fighter and soul calibur. Back then we were used to seeing graphics on the psx and the graphics on the dreamcast were absolutely amazing. the very next day I rushed out and bought one with one of the best games ever made...yup "MORTAL KOMBAT GOLD!" The Sega Dreamcast truly was an underrated gem. An amazing system with perfect ports of sega arcade games and such a shame it died. RIP :(

I say this as someone who grew up on Sega consoles (Master System and Mega Drive) but didn't own any other console between the Mega Drive and PS3. DOA2 absolutely blew me away back then. It was silky smooth and looked like CGI in real time. It didn't even have loading screens (DOA2U did the same thing later on Xbox)! Since then I always wonder how can fighters have sometimes very lengthy loading screens. Shame Tecmo let the series take a nosedive since DOA4. I swear 5 and 6 still uses the same animations as the older games.

I love the dreamcast as the next guy, but people need to get a bit educated... The Dreamcast only had 2 arcade perfect ports, those being Cvs2 and mvc2 since they're based on the Naomi board. The rest like 3s,garou,etc etc are inferior to their ps2 counterparts. Alfa3 is way better on the saturn btw.

I felt the Saturn had better original 2d/3d fighters. And the Dreamcast just improved them. There vs. series started there, Virtua fighter was better there, street fighter alpha 3 was better there, and original fighters like fighters megamix was there. Don't get me wrong though, power stone and soul caliber was amazing even to this day. But in my opinion, the original version of some of these fighters on the Saturn set the stage for the Dreamcast classics we love today. That's why the Saturn fighters are better.

Fun video and good to hear your thoughts. Also, it's an interesting exercise in pitting the two machines. There's a solid case for either one depending on your criteria. Dreamcast has lots of RAM so there are fewer compromises to make. But I'd pick the Saturn because I preferred the fighting games from the period the machine was out over the Dreamcast and later fighting games. For example, I didn't like the direction Capcom took with later games. I was not fond of their art direction starting with Alpha, some of their music choices, their 3D backgrounds, and even the announcer in Alpha 3. That's all a matter of taste, and it just didn't suit mine. I saw King of Fighters '97 in a shop -- it was next to a Street Fighter 3 cabinet, which is what I went to see -- and it immediately renewed my enthusiasm for 2D fighters. I loved so much about KOF. That continued to the Dreamcast, and KOF '98/Dream Match '99 would be my favorite fighting game for the system. But I was more into the fighting genre during the Saturn era and tried more things then. I think I'll find your Saturn list even more interesting and I look forward to it.

VF3tb was the fighting game of choice for us back in the day (since we had played the hell out of VF2 on Saturn), all the way until VF4 arrived on PS2. I still think AM2 should have kept the uneven terrain in some stages of 4 and 5, as I simply loved the concept. I had played VF3 in the arcade shortly before, and the port was pretty close for a launch game IMO. Visually, I think DOA2 easily takes the crown on Dreamcast, with Soul Calibur being a close second. And KoF Dream Match 99 is absolutely gorgeous in its own right. I've never seen more subtle polygon backgrounds with "hand-drawn" textures on them ever again.
