I am a proud owner of Rival Schools, been loving this game since high school. Used to play it for hours with a group of friends. Now I have nobody to play it with so it just sits on my shelf..
I would definitely put Soul Edge/Blade and Dead or Alive in this list over a few of the entries And I would also be remiss to point out that Bushido Blade has 3 stances, which the sequel expanded to 5. Without getting into the technical side of things you had the basic stance which you started off in, A low stance that prioritised defence but made it harder to get a clean kill (which is important for the hidden bushido mechanic) and a high stance that pushed aggression and power at the cost of making you much more vulnerable

@@DarkOverlord96Yup, the OP sounds like they must have dropped off of fighting games long ago if they feel this way about current fighting games because creating your own unique combos and ways of winning is exactly what newer fighting games do, more than ever before even!

I collect fighting games, I currently own every big hitter and the most unique fighting games made including every single game on this list. Fighting games hit a pretty low point during the ps3/wii/Xbox 360 gen which im assuming this is what you're basing this opinion off of. Current fighting games are not only friendlier than ever before for newcomers with many notoriously difficult games becoming easier for newcomers, they also allow the most creative freedom in terms of combos than ever before. The fact that this is one of the most liked comments makes me sad that most seem to be lost in the nostalgia of older fighting games but never actually kept up with them to see that they are better than ever.

@@joeyisabsb1 I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I didn’t say that modern fighting games are trash or didn’t get better . A lot of the news ones are good. What I am pointing out is that it not too many of them doesn’t do much or anything new to stand out because developers are afraid to make it original. It’s not nostalgia that makes me say this and I think fighting games is bigger more than ever. I’m pointing out how different it is compared to now. During the Xbox 360/ PlayStation 3 and Wii, fighting games was on the high because of Street fighter IV. That’s why a lot of popular ones got franchises like Mortal Kombat, Soul Calibur, Tekken, and etc revived because of it.

Kensei is super underrated. Also Tobal. Their grapple/reversal system is way more developed than Tekken's or Virtua Fighter's. I do wish Konami never cancelled Fighting Bujitsu for arcade though. That looked like a serious 3D fighter contender. Also Fighting Layer and Battle Tryst never got ported and SNK lost all the source code for Buriki One and both Samurai Shodown 64 games... There's also Taito's Fighters Impact for arcade/PS1 which was very good and Atlus Yusha: Heaven's Gate which I liked (and it had unlockable guest character Kurara from the Power Instinct fighting game series.) and Critical Blow. Star Gladiator by Capcom was also good. Fun fact: it originally was supposed to be a Star Wars fighting game, but Lucasarts pulled the plug and made their own, so Capcom took the remaining assets and reworked it into their own fighting game. That's why the main guy uses a lightsaber, the end boss looks like Darth Vader, and there's a character that looks like a Wookie 😅

Capcom abandoned all its fighters at one point post 2000 and only Yoshinori Ono's efforts within the company got us SF IV in 2009, followed by Tatsunoko vs Capcom for Arcade as well which got ported to the Wii and then that rejuvenated Marvel vs Capcom. Ehrgeiz is an amazing hidden gem on the PS1. So cool to be able to play as a many of the iconic FF7 characters in full-blown 3D where you had full control over them as opposed to the turn-based combat of their own game. Just a shame that they completely overshadowed all the original characters, because while some of them are unique and interesting like the yo-yo cop girl (have you seen that movie btw?) they don't even compare to the likes of Cloud, Sephy, Vincent, Tifa, and Yuffie.
@budgiecat903911 ай бұрын
I think that game got a lot of heat thrown it's way because people didn't like the unorthodox design of the mechanics. Like I remember people complaining about its running system but ultimately that meant they didn't know how to properly play it. You're not supposed to just let your character run around willy nilly like that. You hold down the shoulder button while playing and then release if need be to run out of the way of attacks. Also, like Tobal 2, it has Just-Frame attacks which isn't something normally used in fighting games much, so it has a difficulty curve in mastering. It's interesting how it was rejected because of its 3D movement. When you think of it, it's almost like one of the main precursors to arena fighters besides Destrega, Bushido Blade, and Thrill Kill. And most people in the FGC do not like arena fighters. I mean just look at Tekken: they tried to evolve it a bit with Tekken 4, and that got rejected so they referred back to simpler 3D movement with Tekken 5 and on through to 8. Now you just see players moving awkwardly using Korean back dash which makes the game look glitchy. Or some players don't even use the 3D movement at all, making it basically a 2.5D game (3D character models moving on a 2D plane which is basically what Street Fighter and Guilty Gear are now). When you think of it, PS2's Urban Reign by Namco would be what Tekken would have evolved to if they didn't abandon developing and evolving the 3D movement.
@FriendlyNeighborhoodGeek9911 ай бұрын
Had no clue there was a final fantasy fighting game! Great video
@budgiecat903911 ай бұрын
Yeah oddly enough, Namco of all companies published it for arcade first and the Final Fantasy characters in the original arcade version were Cloud, Sephiroth and Tifa, and they were time released within the internal clock of the arcade cabinet, much like how Tekken 2 arcade version did that as well (can't remember if Tekken 3 arcade did that too). When Ergheiz got ported to the PS1, Squaresoft published it then they added Luffy and Vincent. The game was developed by Dreamfactory who had also made Tobal #1 (which had come with a Final Fantasy VII demo disc with it in 1996) and it's sequel Tobal 2 which only got released in Japan (dumb mistake imo), and Dreamfactory was headed by Seichi Ishii, who was the designer for the first Virtua Fighter game and director of the first Tekken game. That's why Tobal and Ergheiz share a lot of DNA with Tekken and VF

Ehrgetz and Bushido Blade are ones of my favorite games of all times. And I am not a fan of the PSX. Their first 3D games were horrible but Ehrgetz and Bushido Blade brought so many creative ideas in the way it uses 3D.

Rival School was Capcom's early attempt into 3D fighting games as the time VR Fighter and Tekken series were taking grounds. Also the first time Sakura ever showed up in Street Fighter series so it's part of the street fighter universe we need this IP remade.

I can’t boot up PS1 without playing Gundam Battle Assault 2. There’s solid voice acting and a ton of unlockables. Not to mention the unique 2D mech gameplay.

Never played Gundam Wing Endless Duel for SNES or Gundam EX Revue for arcade? They predate the Gundam Battle Assault series. I actually think Endless Duel is the best which says a lot for an SNES fighter

@@budgiecat9039 I have played them, and I honestly don't like how fast paced they are. They just don't feel like I'm piloting Gundams to me in those games. But I know I'm a minority in feeling that. The Gundam FGC isn't very big, so I know the ED community is bigger than the BA2 one.

@@TMNTfever Honestly if you're making that argument, Gundam wouldn't be restricted to fighting on a 2D plane either so.. Probably why the most popular is the VS series

And this past month of December sold my copy of Rival Schools for almost 300 bucks here in México, already have a backup of this game at my PS3 as well on my PS Vita, with that money AM gonna purchase some games for My daughter, she wants a couple of them for the Switch 😅

On Switch, get her Angel Eyes and Breakers Also Mazinger Z shoot em up is on there which surprised the hell out of me. Though it is double the cost of the other ACA ports (it's $15 not the usual $8)
