Episode Notes:
1. Because this is across 7 years, you will hear many different microphones in use and you will witness the evolution of how my presentation changed. Early on I used cheaper equipment and tended to speak much slower.
2. While making this I realized I could make a part 2 that would be pretty huge, itself. I have covered a lot of Saturn games over the last 7 years.
3. All games are captured on real hardware. Over the years I made it a point to never use emulation for the Saturn unless the content specifically called for it.
4. Early on I used cheap capture methods for the videos. You will see some pretty wild swings in video quality here.
5. I'm also considering this for the Genesis, Sega CD, 32X, and Master System.
6. Although I have learned a lot by making videos on KZbin, I confess I am still very much a novice. I still make mistakes and I frequently find new functions with the hardware and software I use. It's a constant learning experience.
7. I put this video up in 1080p because so much of the old footage was captured at 720p. I figured 4K was pushing it.

I had one when it launched when I was 5. Panzer Dragoon is like a core memory for me. My brother and I grew up in Genesis, Saturn and Dreamcast, then we got into like N64 and PS2 and Xbox when Sega stopped making consoles. My favorite non Sega console is probably GameCube, lots of unique experiences on that console, reminded me a lot of Dreamcast.

I was somewhat lucky. I wanted the Saturn at launch, but as a teenager, could not afford it. I bought it when I could afford when they price dropped to $199 and came with the 3 pack, and I really loved the system. Of course all my friends had PS1 by that time and dissed it, but I didn't care, I had a ton of fun with the Saturn and built a huge library over all the years since and still play it on a regular basis.

My Saturn cost my dad about £350 back in the day when I got it with Virtua Fighter and Daytona. Most of my mates still had a Megadrive or SNES, although one or two had PSX. Nobody aside from me had a Saturn until about a year later, so I had to buy and rent all my games, I unfortunately couldn't swap any! I didn't care though. I felt so damned privileged. I fell in love with it immediately. That love grew when the likes of VF2, Sega Rally, Nights, Virtua Cop, Exhumed, Guardian Heroes, SF Alpha 2, Nightwarriors, Panzer Dragoon appeared, then it became like no other console for me in history once Panzer Dragoon Saga, Quake, Duke Nukem, Fighters Megamix, Sonic Jam, Sonic R, Resident Evil and such were released. Fast forward to a year or so ago, and the Satiator has meant that I can now enjoy the Japanese releases we were starved of in the UK (Metal Slug, Dead or Alive, Vampire Savior, X-Men vs Street Fighter, Thunderforce V, Grandia etc). I think I could play it until I'm in my 80s and still not be anywhere near sampling the entire library.

In spite of their decisions, it's impressive how Sega was able to resonate with certain markets during different generations and create a Rock Paper Scissors effect: Master System dominated Brazil, flopped in Japan and NA. Genesis- exploded in NA, not so much in Japan and good in Brazil. Saturn: did well in Japan, failed in NA. Dreamcast: well received everywhere, but too late.

I've been gaming for 40 years now and the Sega Saturn is to me the very best video game system of all time! I mean c'mon online multiplayer on a console in the mid 90s?! Web browsing, those amazing Sega exclusives!! Um panzer dragoon, panzer dragoon saga, burning rangers, guardian heroes ,nights, Sega rally, virtual fighter and the list goes on, btw the only game system in history that is as innovative and superb as the Sega Saturn, was / is the Sega Dreamcast. If Sony never ruined the game market with their shitty yet somehow popular PlayStation, boy imagine how much further we would be today, Sega made consoles in the 2000's !? Just imagine the innovation we don't have, that's where Sega would have rocked the gaming world. They were so innovative! I consider myself a PC / console, hardcore gamer I own every video game system known to man since coleco vision and guess what there is 1 Sony console in my epic collection a PS4 that was given to me , and it has 1 good game ( which is on every console) sega's phantasy star online 2 ! SEGA!

The kids and game magazines during the 90s always see the Saturn is weaker than the PlayStation but now looking back the difference is actually not that huge and are almost negligible in retrospect. The crt tvs and scanlines used during those years also made 32bit games look better than what is being shown on modern hd tv and youtube too.
@airthrowDBT

This is true, and I keep two different CRT tvs right now because certain systems look better or worse on either: my Xbox and 360 look amazing on my JVC i'art but Saturn looks trash on it, so I play Saturn and other older stuff on a Panasonic Tau.

There was only one Saturn in my neighborhood, and we absolutely got down on Virtua Fighter 2 and Virtua Cop. Most of the time, people who write badly about video game systems like the Saturn (or other things with potential) is that they need to make a quick buck off the words while the discourse is hot. Always been that way.

I bought my Saturn back at launch and she still works perfect to this day ,so many hours of fun gameplay logged into this baby, PlayStation just sucked and if Sony never entered the gaming world, it would have been for the better , Sony attracted all the " non hardcore video games and ruined the innovation Sega would have kept bringing, it's too bad junky PlayStation hit the scene, even with the absence of Sega consoles, Sony still just doesn't do it for me,PC,Xbox, and Nintendo are far better, and Sega was the BEST! I started watching this video when your Assault Suit Leynoss coverage started, and it was like being struck by lightning... It was like being transported back to 1996'ish and I'm in my parents' home reading EGM or GamePro. I see a new release in Japan- Assault Suit Leynoss for the Saturn. I absolutely loved Target Earth and wanted this game badly. Unfortunately, it never released here (or that I know of). As luck would have it, my cousin (also a gamer of our age) is watching this with me. He tells me... "Bro, they just released that on the Xbox Series X and PS5 as a Saturn Tribute. I have it pulled up on our Series X right now, and he's thumbing through our PS5 store to find it there. The cheapest platform wins or failing that the Series X takes it. The Xbox Series X gamepad is the absolute best in the industry. The PS5 is good but finally, Microsoft got it right. It only took them 4 generations of terrible ganepads to do it. ;)

Awesome video, the ultimate saturn reference. Thank you, it was a joy to watch it. We really felt your passion for the Saturn trough it. I understand your disappointment about Panzer Dragoon Saga, expecting another rail shooter, and the price tag being unjustified (well yes and no, demande and offer...), but if you take the game for what it is, at its release, for its backstory that went on development hell, soundtrack (!!!!), the cutscene, gameplay, Graphics, the world! This game is a miracle on the Saturn, a développement tour-de-force that DID compete FF7. And in the end, it also did show the world that the Saturn was capable of what everybody thought it could not do. It doesn't deserve more spotlight because we dont want the price to go higher, but it should not be forgotten as a masterpiece and the pioneer that it was back then. Sega has too much innovative Ip that went forgotten or were overshadow by more mainstream title, and ended up just being another title with poor sales from sega, starting with the very first PSO on the Dreamcast that was one of the most innovative game of all time at its launch and legit changed the industry for what it is today, over shadowed by the launch of xbox live and the online play on other console. It's never mention in top 10 of all time even if it deserve its place next to mario 64. PDS redefined rpg and story telling on console and looked waaaay better, cutscene and in game graphic included, with voice acting, that ff7. Its combat system was never seen before. Let it not sink in the forgotten realm of Sega pioneering IP.

Panzer Dragoon 2 was the first game I saw on a kiosk at Toys R Us and I thought it looked amazing. Running on the ground shooting at stuff then the dragon jumps off a cliff and starts flying, it was intense and the music was perfect. I didn't get a Saturn till I saw how great Capcom Fighters ran on it. Panzer 2 was one of my first pick ups and I got 1 too. I had Saga, even paid retail price for it when I started working my new job at Walmart. 16 years later I lost that job because I got congestive heart failure and my work performance was fading. Sadly while jobless I used my Saturn Library as a saving account lol... Had to sell my top titles including Saga. I had planned on getting them again, but that will never happen. I wish the Saturn had the love back then that it seems to have now. It was truly a good system. And.. I like Mr Bones 😜

Las weekend I finally got to make run properly a Sega Saturn Emulator and got to play Saturn games for the very first time in my life.. 1- Clockwork Knight is an amazing game 2- Astal is a feast to the eyes (I know where you got your intro) 3- Nights is more magical than I expected Somehow I felt like a 10 year old boy again.

The Sega Saturn is an amazing console it’s better than the N64 if Sony and Microsoft never came out with consoles it would still be just Sega and Nintendo blessed to see all from 1980-Now

A lot of what released on N64 either didn't age well or wasn't that good to begin with. The reason for that was Nintendo wanted to push 3D on the system which hurt it in the long run. There is a reason why the Saturn got more games than the N64. The N64 used cartriges instead of CDs.

Assault Suit Leynos was recently released for the Switch in Japan, I wonder if they will localize it for the west at some point, though I have the Saturn version, on a good sale might be worth checking.

The Sega Saturn is one of my biggest Sega regrets and this is the best console from Sega and I aim to get a Saturn before the end of this year so I can get to experience it’s great library and it’s games I’ve held up much better than the vast majority of PS1 games.

Hardware wise everything Sega did after the Genesis was a mistake, and the Genesis ended up behind the SNES in sales even though it had a big head start. The 32X and Sega CD were disasters. Both the Saturn and Dreamcast were underpowered compared to their competitors.

The Saturn is my retro motto. I have such great memories on it is still something awesome. It wasn’t a failure in my point of view with all those import gems. The Dreamcast was the failure in my point of view with only half of the Saturn catalog. I was so upset when Sega decided to stop the Dreamcast. The Saturn has such amazing rare variants ( hi Navi, super prologue, SGX …). Nowadays we have also new homebrew and translation.

1:28 One could say the same about the PS3. I have heard countless times how horrible the system was by the people who never experienced it and never had one. We who actually supported the platform and gamed on it think very differently of it. I think in some ways the PS3 was better than Sony's offerings after it.

Have any good saturn emulators been developed by now to be able to play most saturn games effectively on andriod? Also what is a good saturn emulator to play saturn games on pc as well? Thank you.

I know emulators being free is a huge advantage, but if you have a Saturn, even one with a broken CD ROM drive, the Saroo cart is freaking amazing and not super expensive

Too many years have passed by now already. It is extremely hard to find a Saturn by now whether in working condition or not. Emulators are more practical and easier to set up by now unfortunately. At least in the region I'm based in.

When the 16 bit era arrived, I was pressed for the Turbo Grafx and always kept my eye on the SNES. My family went with the Genesis, and I was happy that they did because I always felt the 6 button controller was by far the best. Fast forward to the next Gen, Saturn and PS1 were, and N64 was well on its way. I read an Gamepro article on Night Warriors, and saw the graphics and knew they had kept the 6 buttons on the face of the Saturn controller, with two bumpers. Right there, I knew I would go with the Saturn, and I never looked back.
