The comment left on the Jezebel post at 13:53 absolutely blew my mind. There's something sexual about a little girl's love for horses?? The woman writing this just puts that out there as if that's a known thing. Is it?? I also rode horses as a kid, it definitely wasn't sexual for me. I don't think the "super feminine slutty" horse dolls would have ruined horse riding for me, if I'd been presented with one at the time. I think this lady might just be a furry and not realise it.

My clearest memory of What's Her Face dolls is that when they came out, I was 100% convinced beyond comprehension that the pink and yellow pigtail wigs were meant to be Sailor Moon references and I wanted to get them and draw Usagi and Chibusa faces on them SO bad, but unfortunately I had a temper tantrum in the Wal-Mart doll aisle and my mom wouldn't get them for me as a result lol

Also, as far as I know, the Storytime Princesses are one of those lines that was never really archived or researched back in the day (at least I don't remember seeing any resources back then or today)! I don't think many people cared about them even when they were on shelves and definitely not after, except for a handful of people. It's been REALLY hard researching them and their history as a result- lots and lots of packaging variants for each collection (afaik there's like...4 package variants of JUST the deluxe princess dolls), playsets that have only been photographed once or twice, some prototype images and a Wayback Machine archive of the website that MGA didn't update after it first launched- piecing together this line has been such a pain in the ass and I'm still trying to locate the other packaging variants for my collection lol, as well as the castle playset and the horses and carriage. There was even a planned 2010s reboot that never got off the ground, and I'm still hoping I'll find the Toy Fair photos of them but it's unlikely lol

I always found it annoying that they expected the models to be able to work through really extreme conditions without flinching and gods help them if their makeover didn't go well. I also remember Tyra having the braces removed from one of the contestants and I was so concerned. First off, Tyra shouldn't mess with someone's medical equipment without consulting the doctor who gave it to them first and second, braces are expensive as hell. Lastly, that could have really fucked up her teeth. If you remove braces and you don't give the patient a retainer, their teeth will just move back to their original position and she'd have to start over again. I hope production paid for replacement braces.

And if I remember correctly when you put Melanie under the little hair dryer in the salon the hair dryer made hair dryer noises as well. Also a bunch of different things lit up. And I remember so vividly how difficult it was to change the little outfits on these little freaking dolls. This place that required so many batteries! I remember having to use a whole like 24 pack of batteries just to get everything working. But that escalator - was like my favorite thing ever! I just thought it was so incredibly cool. I absolutely loved this place that and I'm so sad that my mom let my little cousins take it after I went away to college. My kids named theirs Dovasary and Saraiyu after 2 character’s from Tamora Pierce’s Trickster’s Series. Remembering them cascaded me into so many lovely memories from when they were young. Also, I was recently researching ~18” tall dolls that were not AG shaped. My youngest brought out their Teen Trends doll for me to examine. Those floppy joints make an extremely cuddly doll that is fun to hold. Plus, their feet are so delicate and well-shaped. Dolls mean so much to me and I really appreciate your thoughtful videos.

The Strutz… omg, thank you for reminding me how long I’ve been reading Jezebel. 🤦🏻♀️ They remind me so much of Fashion Star Fillies. I has several when I little, and I held onto one until college. I loved them so, so much. One day recently, at Goodwill, I found one that looked just like the one I hung onto into my twenties. I got a few stares clutching her to my chest on my way to the register. 💕

I haven't heard of Struts and I really want one now! I think whether or not something is a fashion doll depends on how it's meant to be played with, rather than necessarily having a humanoid shape

I am absolutely obsessed with the idea you brought up with the horse dolls, namely what are the necessary and sufficient conditions to make something a fashion doll.

I honestly couldn’t tell you if I had Courtney ( 36:12 ) or if I just longed to have her so intensely that I gave myself false memories, but I can practically smell the Toys R Us when I look at that packaging! They were similar in size to BFC Ink (which were themselves similar in size to the ever popular, but out of reach, AG dolls, but articulated and more tween-proportioned), but for ✨teens✨, and I thought that made them SO cool. I just KNEW Courtney shopped at The Limited Too. 😂 It’s interesting about Teen Trends aiming to fill a gap between dolls for kids and adults, because that really is how I saw them at the time. They were designed to look like teenagers, as were the fashion dolls I had, but the size, detailed clothes, and articulation made them seem more sophisticated to my kid brain.
@calliea3336 Жыл бұрын
I just showed my mom and verified that I in fact did not own a Teen Trends doll. Maybe not getting Courtney was the start of my fixation on articulated dolls 😂

FINALLY I see a doll video talk about Storytime Princess! I had those dolls and loved them! If I recall correctly, they had a collaboration with Shrek, which included Fiona and the versions of the princesses from those films. I did watch America's Next Top Model with my family as a kid, but I don't think I knew of those dolls' existence. My cousin and I would play our own Top Model with Barbie and Bratz dolls, but it was purely the competition and not the drama.

I love the cutie pops dolls. I loved pulling them out when talking to other collectors who only really started with mh years later. They are rad honestly. I bought them while they were still in store and bought 3 or 4 I think. I’m surprised you didn’t mention the mini ones that were almost lalaloopsy like with the swing legs and hard plastic clothes. Fun little shelf dolls though. I also got the one who was movie theatre themed and came with a dog. Odd little doll line but I love them a lot. They are mildly terrifying when their eyes are out as the pupil hole is uncoloured and just kinda spooky.

This was so interesting, thank you! I've been collecting dolls 'seriously' since I first revisited my childhood love of Barbie in my teens in the late 90s, and I've always been drawn to short lived, obscure lines like this. I used to haunt the doll aisles at TRU in hopes of finding something unusual. No matter how many of these you know about it seems like there's always something new to discover! Several of these were unknown to me, so I appreciate your impulse to share. A few of my favorites from the early 2000s were the Zodiac Girls mentioned in your 'underappreciated' video; the Lollipop Girls created by Australian doll designer Jan McLean; and Off the Hook, Integrity Toys' attempt to capitalize on the initial popularity of Bratz (back in the pre-Fashion Royalty days when they were still just a small independent company that mainly made play line dolls). Obviously I'm coming to this comment thread a bit late (just discovered the channel a few days ago), but there were a couple of things I wanted to touch on in case they haven't been mentioned already: J-Dolls were actually an amalgam of two Jun Planning lines. Aside from having Pullip bodies, the head mold was recycled from an EXTREMELY short-lived line of tween dolls called Class Mates that JP released in the summer of 2004. Only three dolls were ever released, but they were received so poorly by collectors that JP scrapped the entire line and they were never spoken of again until J-Doll popped up a few years later. Personally I never understood the hate--I got one of the girls (Merippe) and I thought (and still think) she's perfectly adorable. In the interim between Class Mates and J-Doll (around 2006/7) there was another brief JP line called Hestia, which used a unique head mold that was halfway between Pullip and J-Doll in size. They were beautiful but weirdly expensive (was never clear on why exactly) so I never ended up buying any 😅 Lastly I just wanted to throw out the suspicion that the reason why your Teen Trends dolls have such weak articulation is that their limbs are internally strung like a BJD, and over the years since they were manufactured the tension in the elastic has relaxed as the rubber deteriorates. I have a Kianna in storage somewhere that I bought back when they were new, and I don't remember her being that floppy. A doll hospital would probably be able to restring them for you and make them good as new.
@kalezuki9231 Жыл бұрын
I am so sad that Class Mates weren't popular. But they are also very easy to accidentally destroy & that may be part of why they did not last long. I only had one , don't know what happened to her besides getting broken & I wish I could go back in time , would of taken more care with her & I have no idea where she would be right now if I still have her. I also wish I could go back in time to buy up Strutz & allll the WHF dolls along with all the Shibajuku dolls
@Mythosidhe Жыл бұрын
@@kalezuki9231 My Merippe is still in excellent condition, but I never did much with her aside from posing her on a shelf. Picked up one Shibajuku doll when they were in stores, she's cute but thee $30 price point baffled me when they came with relatively simple clothing and so few accessories. They just seemed like not-as-good Pullips to me 😅

I had two of the Cutie Pops dolls as a kid, as well as the dogs! I think part of the reason I liked so much was the dessert theme, and how it was casually sort of sweet Lolita, like you mentioned. That was right when I learned about "kawaii culture"!

There was lots of doll lines I didn't even know existed! I looked up almost everyone on this list. A few discontinued lines you might want to look at are Zeenie dolls, Once upon A Zombie princesses and MC2 dolls. They were all so pretty gut didn't take off for varying reasons. Great video!

Every Christmas my parents mention What's Her Face, and how they had to go into every single shop in our city to find them for me the year it first released. Because apparently I said that if I didn't get one, it would be the worst Christmas ever. Bless their hearts, my parents did pull through and find me one on time for Christmas. But 20+ years later they still won't let me forget it

I remember my dad got me a Strut horse when I was kid (the brown one with pink clothes to be exact). I was too young to know how to take care of her responsibly and eventually threw her away, and I always regret it cause they look so pretty xd I can’t say I’m doing too hot right now, but it is definitely not because I owned a dressed up horse as a kid lol

I was a My Little Pony girl & put my ponies in my Barbie's clothes when I could. I wish I'd known Struts existed. Could your imagine the animated series though, it would have been too hot to trot. Maybe we could've even had a crossover.

Why does no one ever talk about the Lil Bratz dolls because as a child I loved them not only were the super affordable which meant my parents were more likely to buy them for me but as a child they were easier for me to hold and play with. They were also really popular in the early 2000’s they had play sets to go with the dolls like I remember having the mall (which included several different stores that connected and stacked on top of each other as well as a working escalator). I also had a house for them I loved them they were my favorite toys and as a child I didn’t like the regular bratz only the Lil Bratz but no one seems to remember them.

One of my favorite things about your videos is how you're able to take a doll line/brand that I might definitely not like, but make me appreciate and become intrigued with it because from your collector's perspective you appreciate it in such a way I never thought about. Strutz are way smaller than I thought they were. They're SO rare and honestly, absolutely crack me up. Who the hell was like "you know what? Horses, with bratz eyes and high heels!" lol. SO funny. I'm borderline obsessed with these bizarre things. the idea of a horse scooba diving is even funnier! OMG imagine her in a full scooba outfit. But come on, "whorses" is a hilarious name. I've owned most of these on the list at some point or other. I would add Lorifina, Hasbro's foray into larger bjd style dolls. She's not talked about much either.

Oh my god, I thought about What's Her Face yesterday. I never had one either, but I remember the commercials for these dolls so vividly. I don't even know if I wanted one back then. They just randomly popped in my head yesterday like "huh, those sure were kinda weird, I wonder if someone on KZbin ever talked about them" and now I randomly watch this video and you bring them up! I love when that happens.

You’re the reason I bought Kianna! I love her style, but it’s ridiculously hard to find their fashion packs. And you’re right, the hair is BAD. It even affected the vinyl of her head 😢
