Chicken leg quarters may not be everyone's favorite, but its so versatile. You can make barbecue chicken sandwiches, tacos, burritos, white chili, pasta dishes etc. And of course you can make soup with the bones. A 10.00 ten -pound bag, carrots, celery, onions & rice will make enough soup to feed an army, lol!😊

Good points Dawn! We shop every other week or so for big shopping, but we go weekly for produce. Huge produce eaters here 😊. Six months or so ago, we completely stopped snacks. Went cold turkey. My hubbys go to was chips. Mine was all kinds of crackers. If we feel that need to grab a snack, we eat fruit. This past weekend, we had all our kids & their families over for a bbq (hamburgers & hotdogs), to celebrate multiple birthdays. We always go way out for get together. Let’s just say, you won’t starve. I bought chips, crackers, etc with dips, etc. My husband & I couldn’t even eat the crackers, chips, etc. it’s been so long that we no longer crave it. I guess what I’m trying to say, is once you stop eating it, after awhile, you no longer want it.

It’s so true. We don’t eat junk foods. Which is technically not food. If it doesn’t fuel our body properly, we don’t buy it. An occasional piece of chocolate but it’s got more cocoa than sugar. Dark dark chocolate. 😊

I used to be a huge Diet Coke drinker. I always had a soda open. Soda is so darn expensive now, I rarely drink it. My husband still does. He likes the 12 oz bottles, that way he won't waste it if he doesn't finish it. I keep a half gallon jug of tap water in the fridge and drink that. I love water!

@@janettraynor433 Me too! I think it was the carbonation too. I’ve never had a problem drinking water, but now I have ice water, all day long. For my craving on carbonation, I drink one of those bubbly burst drinks. That’s only maybe once or twice a week. I recently had a Diet Coke & yuck. It’s been so long. I spilled it out.

Great tips, Dawn! I was planning my 9 year old grandson’s family dinner birthday party last week and I was very tempted to just order a sub tray from Publix and a cake from their bakery. I had been sick with pneumonia since Cinco De Mayo and I really didn’t want to cook. But I thought of you saying “Use what you have!” so I made shrimp scampi over pasta (a ten minute dish) using the 3 lbs of frozen shrimp I had bought on sale a few weeks ago. I also made a brownie ice cream cake using two boxed brownie mixes I already had with the ice cream I already had. I fed 10 people for probably around $3.50 or so a person, while the subs and cake would have been at least $5.50 a person. You were on my shoulder while I was wrestling with this, and fortunately for me, you won that argument! 😂🥰

Hello Dawn My son and I both are growing herbs in our edible gardens. He dried some Oregano and then put it in a coffee grinder and gifted me it. Ground Oregano is really good on a lot of things. I plan on getting my own grinder too. I am trying to spend less on groceries too. I am saving for new tires for my truck and another automatic dishwasher.

You can ground dried oregano by rubbing it between your hands. I do this with thyme and mint (mint leaves are thinner). You can even store it whole once dried and ground a small amount by hand when you use it.

I think $500./mo. for 3 people is great! We spend $600./mo. for 3 & I'm pretty frugal :) After a lifetime of being thrifty, I don't need to be as careful anymore. It actually feels strange to splurge a little (like buying individual snack bags rather than portioning out a big bag myself). I'll always do some things though, such as my top savings tip: zero food waste always! xoxo

Definitely buy what you will eat or have for a snack. No best intentions today. If I go with (but I want to be healthier snack) I buy as little of it as possible, like nuts, or yogurt, maybe some cottage cheese. All in smaller size. If it's not healthy....I don't get a snack and have to cook something. There are times when I will get a pre-made (small) chocolate cake at Walmart...I'm not an animal. Lol

The past few months I’ve been able to only spend about 80$ a month for my husband and I. I shop every 2 weeks and make a strict list with the prices before I go to the store. I had lots of meat , frozen veggies , canned meats and veggies and dry rice and beans. I’ve been working through the stockpile so it doesn’t go bad. We buy our paper products, coffee, cooking oil and soaps at Sams so they last us about 4-6 months. Once in a while a neighbor shares extra food with us too. Since I used to be a big food shopper and borderline Prepper I have a lot to work through. After this I’m only buying things we will eat because unfortunately some stuff has expired on me.

My Number One Top Tip: Get to the grocery early and buy clearance food. Head for the Deli to buy premade deli food at a clearance price. $20 chicken becomes $1.43 (sometimes less) clearance chicken. Then head for the clearance aisles. Each dept has a clearance food section (treat aisles like they're one dept.) and learn where each dept puts its clearance items. If you hit it right, you can head home with meat both raw and cooked, canned goods, baked goods, dairy (such as milk, cheese, and eggs), and even flowers for under $25. However, there is massive competition for these items. You really have to grab n go! Just race around the grocery store without regard to what you need/want and your cart will be about half full on $25. Then take out your grocery list, breathe, tick off the items that you just got and no longer need - BEARING IN MIND substitutions! You had in mind to have Fish n Chips, but the Albacore tuna in water was $0.10 a can -> Tuna Casserole instead. You had planned to have cake on Sunday -> Cake Pops from the smushed cake in bakery dept. You wanted two pounds of Pricey Quinoa, but Affordable Brown rice was on clearance for $0.25 for 10 pounds. This experience is similar to a Black Friday sale and the savings are just as phenomenal. Just don't bring family &/or kids with you. Put your purse in the trunk and your payment (debit, credit, cash) in nature's pocket (brassiere) and stay focused. I'm too old for this now, but I sure did then.

TIP WE USE WEEKLY... we make out a day in chrynometer (free) to mke sure our menu is balanced. My parter made me an awesome spreadsheet that calculates for 2 people with the number of days I want to buy for including the packaging and price for each item. I can see exactly what my grocery bill vs budget is. As I shop, I check each item off and record the actual price along with any notes to save more money next week. Another benefit of this spreadsheet is you can see very clearly if you arent planning to use everything up. I then alter my menu or make less to match the packaging size. Hope this idea helps.

Fabulous ideas! I love you calling a casserole a "hot dish." I do many of the same things you do. My biggest savings is to buy chicken breasts with the bones on sale. I'll roast them and have one for our dinner that night. I'll debone the others and shred the meat, putting it in 2 cup increments in a freezer bag. That's good for several casseroles. I cook the bones with scraps of celery, carrots, and onion to make chicken broth. It's delicious. I'm sure everyone does this, but it's been great for me. Thank you for helping keep our budgets lower. Love to all, Linda 💕

We quit buying cereal opting for oatmeal and homemade flake cereal. 2x a month I treat ourselves and have desert for dinner. A rice pudding with dried fruit, or a yankee pudding. Inexpensive ingredients that are filling and are a real treat. We utilize beans heavily. I researched high protien vegetarian meals during the week and have beef or chicken on weekends. Less expensive at the store, and we also no longer need statins which is an additional savings of about $300 per year for the two of us. We bought a pizza oven that we use weekly. We bake our own bread and crackers. We grow as much of our fruits and veggies as we can. We go with growing things that are good producers and are expensive to buy. Think tomatoes over corn

I do not have a grocery budget and do very well on a limited social security income. I plan on spending $200 dollars tomorrow on groceries. But it is all on stocking up. Ribs are on sale for $2.49 a pound. I plan to buy 4 slabs at around $11.00 per slab. That is how you Save Money. Hormel Chili is on sale. I will buy 12 cans. And Open Pit bbq sauce is on sale. I'll buy 5 of those. Budgets Limit your spending power. Next month I will barely need to buy groceries. And that money will be added to my money pile. I put all of my money in one bucket and use it as needed. It has worked for me for 30 years. P.S. Are there any books that have helped you save money ? Wow! You have some great ideas.… some that I have never even thought of. Thank you! I would say the one thing that I do that helps most with grocery savings is to shop the stores early in the morning when they mark things down. Many times I will purchase salad, vegetables, meat all at a steep discount. This really has help pad my grocery budget tremendously. Also making my menus starting with was already in my cupboards in fridge and freezer is very helpful. many times I will only need to purchase one or two items to make a complete meal. And speaking of a complete meal. I also like to make meals with the leftovers. If I make tacos, maybe the next day I will make a taco salad and pick up some Doritos to put on top. I actually did that tonight, but I did not have Catalina dressing, so I looked up a recipe and I had all the ingredients to make my own. That’s another thing that I do is make ingredients instead of buy them …I feel like groceries are the one thing that we can somewhat save on if we are thrifty and think outside the box. I really enjoy your channel. Thank you!

Hi..love your tips. Try rinsing your hands & onion under cold water before chopping onion and your eyes won't tear up.Also, I too like recipes with the least amount of ingredients..Portioned meals in containers are great ideas too.Chopped veg's/fruits cost more in stores, cut them yourself cheaper to purchase. I Make crockpot meals for 1 person household and there's plenty to have meals made for 3 days. Drink coffee for breakfast it feels me up I'm good until afternoon.

Keep a pair of wrap-around type clear plastic glasses to put on your eyes before peeling an onion. It's only for a few minutes until you get it peeled. Works well.

Great ideas! I'm going to try them. Food is WAY too expensive to waste and to go buy more because there's "nothing" to eat. That translates into There's nothing I WANT to eat that's in my fridge/cabinet. The only thing I go back often to buy is produce. I'm ok with that.

Hello Money Mom. I buy the cheapest chicken even if my family will not eat it because I make soup(broth) out of it. With the left over meat I give it to the dog. The bones and skin are the only things I throw out. Thanks for all your tips

excellent points/suggestions, easy to follow and definitely we'll save us money, I try to shop the outer aisles, limit processed food, and shop my own pantry. You do so well on that budget, that's a lot of meals you're getting. You save so much by prepping/cooking/baking at home, really enjoyed this video,

We don’t have an Aldi here, but Dollar Tree has great bargains! Comparing applesauce in 4 container packaging one day, Dollar Tree $1.25 , went next door to Trader Joe’s for exact same applesauce $1.99 then, went to Smiths grocery $2.49 all being the exact same brand.

Again I will suggest to you to do grocery pickup. You Don't need a calculator, you select your needs, and the total is calculated as you add to your cart. Get/Keep out of the store if one is serious about saving money and not buying items that wreck your budget or weight loss goals.

If you keep you onions in the fridge they don't make you cry ,very good ideas, , I am a family of 2, however I prepare meals for 4 and my food budget is $150 every 2. Wks . I'm more of a meat and potato person ,I do include all my food out in my grocery budget, but I use coupons and specials to keep those meals affordable , left overs are used often fory husbands lunch or both, for instance, We might grab 2 pizza deals from Sam's club , I feel this helps local businesses or places in my community keep open, and is a better deal for us than buying all the ingredients to make , $ 5 for two and gives me a break, another thing I do is shop the ads , I do go to multiple places, and the perimeter of the stores following the list I made from shopping the ads , I buy 100 percent frozen concentrate for my fàv juices, they cost about $1.60 vs $3 something a bottle of sugar free , my husband loves coffee but only drinks 2 cups, so I take remainder of the pot and add milk, and cocoa and mix with sweetening with stevia for a container of iced mocha as a drink choice I also use lemon juice and frozen fruit to make strawberry lemonade, these sweet treat drinks cost me literally hardly any thing to make, but feels special, and that's great, I also keep 4 of everything I buy and replace it with the one I use so I always have canned or fr veggies and fruit on hand , make jello and pudding cups, l can cook and bake well but sometimes it's just easier to do almost home made, like leftover mashed potatoes, I can pour a can of veg beef soup into a baking dish and top with leftover mashed potatoes for dinner and still some left I make a container of potato salad etc, I like to make gulash in our family that's just onions pasta and tomatoes, and hamburger left over pork into a tub of bbq pork, etc . I like to go thrifting at a small shop on Saturday and they give free bread ,, rolls, muffins etc after their pantry closes this is great because o bbq pork is in my fridge Italian bread into French bread pizzas, etc free bread can be turned into quick dinners ingredients for other meals etc

Hey Dawn! I turn on a mini fan that blows the onion fumes away from me while I’m chopping and it works like a charm. I make sure to store my onion in the fridge beforehand. I thought I would share because it’s too hot outside to chop onions!

Good tips. We buy only what we will eat and have a nice supply of tomato sauce from our garden last year, so i pull that out to make meals i have alot to use up steaks, pork chops ,ground meat and stuff cabbage i use the food saver alot. Have enough noodles, rice canned vegetables, when was BOBO . When our farmers market gets fresh fruits and vegetables. Always has great deals. Can't go wrong without a freezer. Know it uses little extra electricity frost free upright but need to save when they have sales not advertised. Get bananas 4 lbs for 99 cents, and we make muffins in our cereal and eat them . Put chocolate on them and freeze them for treat. Buy only sun chips, gram crackers, vanilla waffles, and pretzels. I'm leaning to stop spending so much on non necessary items. Have a list and stick with it. Staying away from Dollar Tree Store. Is a big help..

If shopping at Fred Meyer or Kroger look for red bagged produce in netting. This is on a special shelf and the whole bag is 99 cents. All of the items in the bag will only cost the 99 cents. Ask the produce person to show you where this discounted produce is located.
