My goto compression workflow explained here in a straight forward way. The 1176 and LA2 also work very well together on a drumbus. Thanks Chris! As usual a very goof tutorial. Cheers from Antwerp.

Great vid. You can also use smart comp... It does the transient peak management and lifting the body.. Much like waves m2 with added advantage of incredible spectral control. I'm trying to ditch the endless train of plugs...pretty much sc2 is THE fixer. Then add salt to taste ie vintage

Hi Chris, thank you for this vidéo. Just a stupid question about 1176, usually fast attack/release is on the right of the knob, isn't it ? Try, this you will see , the comp is more effective, fighting more with transients. Great job, thank you for all the tutorials you provide us. ❤

You mentioned that you might approach the compression differently if it was an upright bass in a jazz context. Just curious how you might apply compression on upright in an acoustic jazz trio, no drums? I have my go-to’s but I’m curious if you have something new I could explore a bit. Thanks

Very good video, Chris, thank you. That seems to be the same “dual vocal compression” technique for dynamic vocals. I wonder what would be your first approach for a bass with poor punch, using compression. I guess an envelope shaper could help too.
@mixdownonline11 ай бұрын
Thanks Jorge! For a poor punch bass sound, I would use a slow Attack, and medium-fast release to begin with

I like the sound of the bass in the second tune. I suppose there are compression, saturation and eq ahead of the amplifier?

That's an old drum recording I made myself for this song. The snare sound is a blend of the snare recording with 2 extra snare samples to support the snare recording. Glad you like it, thanks :-)

Hi Chris love the video, great tips!!!! Question…. I know you did a review on the MM 500 and you’ve been using them for a while now, do you use any EQ correction on them to compensate for the light low end and if so how much?
@mixdownonline11 ай бұрын
Yes, I did, the MM-500 are my go-to mixing headphones, and I don't use any EQ correction on them, I like them the way they sound. I do like the low end though, not too loud, but clear enough for me to know what's happening down there. So for me it's the right balance.

very good video. I only wish there was less talking during the settings changes so we can hear the differences. for example, when changing attack from fast to slow and then back from slow to fas,t you talk the entire time, so we can't hear what is actually happening with the transients

Please don't get me wrong, but I did not hear out any difference, when you bypassed any of the compressors. Anyway, the theory behind comprssion was nicely described, so that even me got it. I hope! Thank you!
@PurpleMusicProductions11 ай бұрын
I thought it was just me, but I agree I did not hear much difference. Whenever I have used the 1176 the effects are obvious and I have to dial it to taste but once I engage bypass the results are more pronounced. Not sure what happened here especially since he ran a series to the LA2A which is a completely different flavor and tone.

You using a "FET" type compressor - except you're not - the key sound of an 1176 is the distortion you get with the compression - it's just the way they work. By using the UAD 1176 Legacy you are just getting totally clean compression with the attack and release slopes of an 1176 - there' no hardware emulation going on - no FET sound - may as well use a stock compressor plugin.
@mixdownonline11 ай бұрын
You're jumping in a terminology rabbit hole that has nothing to do with the point of this video :-)
@EdwinDekker718 ай бұрын
Compression is in itself a non linear process. Much of the distortion you mention comes from the very fast attack times of FET compressors. The attack time can be much faster than the waveform it is compessing. Combine this with a fast enough release and you'll be altering the wave shape, which we hear as distortion. In other words, the compressor adds harmonics due to the fast attack/release behaviour.

Is it just me or does the bass already sounds compressed before going through the processing? I hear a pumping effect.

Try talking a copy of your bass track then use the "glue" preset of Cubase's Bass VST amp and then mix it in subtly - adds all the weight that's missing from this bass track.
