I have received a lot of questions about what pedals are best for the John Frusciante cleanish tone so here be the top 3 Pedals I recommend.
One of the most important things when picking a Pedal for the John tone is the it has to be compatible with the Ibanez WH10 wah and Boss DS2.
I hope this vid helps and thank you so much for watching. : )

This is so impressive. This is the first guitar video I've ever seen where the presenter discusses pedals that go well together. I know that sounds crazy - shouldn't they ALL discuss that? - but it doesn't happen, in my experience. Thanks, Dave! By the way, I spent your entire talk about pedals wondering when that spider was going to jump on your head.

Thanks Dave for this video, very well explained. I fell in love with a fender tonemaster twin reverb the other day, and the only thing stopping me from buying it then and there was not being able to do this due to the amount of headroom on the amp (which is kinda the point of it). After watching this video I'm pretty confident that I can get pretty close with the jackhammer (the EQ should help heaps), helped by the fact that you can actually change the powerstage of the tonemaster from 1, 5, 20 80 something watts to help it break up which is usually impossible with a classic tube twin. Also the twin actually has a mid EQ as opposed to most fender amps so that's should help smooth it out.

I have achieved my personal JF sound with an original 1987 50 watt silver jubilee with matching 2x12 vintage 30 cab on clean channel(no rhythm clip engaged) and a xotic Ep booster at the end of my pedals chain. As you know the silver jubilee is the most clean souding Marshall amp but with the Ep booster in the front I really get closed to JF cleanish grit that you always mention in your videos!! Thanks again to share with us your passion...cheers from Italy ;-)

I loved your intro in this video, it sounded amazing!! I've tried getting the John tone out of the od channel of my amp, but it made my Clean sound dull and dry, although close to the John sound, and it made my DS-2 behave, but then I got my hands on the Jackhammer right after getting my Guv'nor (thanks to you I love these pedals now) and the John Clean sound was there, it sounded great!! I've only just recently come across your videos but I am really enjoying them. You're crazy good!!!! I'm very impressed. I love how when you give examples you draw a lot from John's live performances as well. Thanks for the advice regards the pedals. Now that I've actually got money a little extra money to spend for the first time in my adult life, I will slowly begin to invest in key Frusciante pedals. It's interesting to note that all three pedals here are in very similar in price and all highly affordable. I'm looking to get the Ibanez Wah after recently investing in a Line 6 HX Effects (looking forward to putting the Obi Wah and the Ibanez Wah together to jam Throw Away Your Television).

What's your take on tasking Mesa's, particularly a MKV for use with this set-up? Also are you at all familiar with the Crybaby 535Q? What's your take on that one vs the Ibanez? No worries if not familiar, your set-ups are so specifically nuanced I thought it may be worth asking since you seem to really understand the pedal and amp interactions.

Hi Dave, Thanks for these videos. They are really helpful. One question though, what is it about the wh10 that is so important to use that wah vs say a standard Vox wah? I ask because I like playing rhcp tunes as a fairly serious hobbyist and I don't particularly care for the wh10 for anything other than rhcp but I have a Vox 847 wah that I like for other stuff I play as well like hendrix and jimmy page type stuff. I am just trying to get in the ballpark in tone and would like to just use one wah for everything I play. By not using the wh10 does it just mean that my wah tone is different but not my bypassed tone, i.e., the wah isn't crucial to the bypassed tone as well right? Thanks.

Thank you a lot for this deep-dive! It is really cool to know all of that about the John’s “cleanish” unique sound! I have a little question though. Is the Dunlop MXR Micro-Amp also a good choice for boosting the signal when using the DS2 & Ibanez Wah (v3)? I am more attracted towards the Jackhammer cuz there is more EQ adjustability but I want to know if the MxR Microamp falls also in this section of boost-OD pedals. Thanks in advance & keep it up! 🤘🏻

Does anyone here have experience using an original Boss CE-1 with a ds-2? I'm running my boss ds2 --> CE-1 --> front of amp and getting a ton of noise while both pedals are on, even with a noise gate. I'm trying to tame the thing and can't tell if it's the ds2 or the CE-1 causing the noise, but I'm thinking it's the ds-2. When I isolate each pedal, it's not nearly as bad, so that tells me the two pedals aren't getting along well lol. Wondering if anyone knows how John uses thee two pedals and if I'm possibly doing something wrong given how sensitive these pedals seem to be. 🤘🏻

Dave I’ve just bought a Boss Katana 50 and a Jackhammer, please advise what setting for that John sound. I’m playing a 2013 Fender American deluxe. Thanks Lee

John Frusciante setting would be something like Clean mode Gain 10 Volume 10 Bass 0 Middle 0 Treble 0 Booster - Green - 3 You'll have to tweak the pedal and amp though for it to be right for you. : )

Is it possible to recreate Johns dirty sound on a quiet amp like my VOX AC30VR? I think my amp could be way too quiet to do the ds2+ibanez thing. Maybe if i crank it? What do you recommend dave?

Yep. I have a video on that very amp getting John’s tone.

@thedavesimpson thanks for the reply dave. I saw that video but you didn’t talk really that much about getting close to johns sound with the ds2 on the ac30vr. So let me rephrase my question a bit more clearly: Do I need a Jackhammer/golden plexi to make my ds2 behave itself or do you think that the cranked gain on this amp is enough?

Hi Dave, professional video as always, lots of infos(very important ones) :)) Just got one question. I have bought myself a Marshall Origin 50 C combo lately. I have all the important pedals that you mention in the video and wanted to ask you if you could help me get the sound that you are getting from your amp. I have seen also your videos on your amplifiers, but can't really get the tone right. Don't know if you are familiar with this particular series, there are few knobs that might make a difference, but I am not able to figure it out... (i am not quite there with the sound of the amp)

Hello Dave! Thank you so much for all your help! Unfortunately i still cannot get the DS2 behave - it is just too loud. My CR60 is set the same as your CR120, Jackhammer JH-1 with your settings and DS2 with your settings / Joshs settings. There is not a lot of difference at low master volume (1) but a significant volume jump at master volume 2 or higher. I have lowered my pickups as far as possible too. Do you have any ideas left? I watched your video on CR60 vs CR120 - it should behave the same. it my case it does not..

Hello Dave, congratulations on your work and your music, you can see that you do all this with passion and dedication. I've followed pretty much all of your videos on how to get the Frusciante sound and I'm almost there. in a video you said that you rely on your pedals to recreate the sound because obviously you can't always have your favorite amp available. In my case I have this amp: DV Mark Jazz 12 can you give me some advice on how to set it up? if I put the volume of the ds 2 to 10 there is a jump in volume too large but if I keep it more I lose the characteristic sound of the ds 2 (as you teach ^^). Thanks for your time and keep it up! 😊 Federico

This is great dave!! Just found a barely used jackhammer on ebay!! So when you run it through your CR120s dirty channel are the settings the same as in the video? Also what are the settings on your dirty channel of the amp, and does that all stay the same at gig volumes? Thank you!!!
@thedavesimpson

They are the same settings indeed but you will have tweak them. I set my CR120 Gain 2 1/2 Bass 0 Middle 6 Treble 4 Volume 10

I'm about to get the JackHammer. What would be the best settings in my amp, Dave? I have the Boss Katana 100,, and I kinda prefer the Crunch mode over the Brown mode for that ''John cleanish'' tone, but I do get the volume jump with the DS2. When I get my JH, should I keep my amp on the clean mode then and let the JH alone give that ''John cleanish'' tone?

Náufrago i have a Marshall model and have found that low gain on the distorted channel really lets the ds-2 shine and is just a better John tone than the clean

Do you mean the distortion channel in the Jh? I got mine today, and I really like the tone I was able to get with low gain, OV mode and a little bit of treble , but O couldn't Control the DS2 volume boost at all
