You can tell he's an actor's actor. He's not the proudest of a film that made a ton of money or a film that won him awards or even a film that a lot of his own fans like, he's proud of the character where he felt he could show off his craft the most. Even the films he said are must watch are all pretty great choices that show off the range that Tamil cinema has, gangster-biopics, coming of age romance stories, a silent comedy and a movie that shows the nuances of human relationships. Throw in a proper masala commercial entertainer like Baasha or Thuppaki and you've covered pretty much the entire range of movies that Tamil cinema has to offer.

Raavan is the worst portrayal of Ramayana, it was not poetic, it was not a hit then not in the South of India as well and it is not a cult movie. A Periyarist wet dream is what it is. It is like the Asura book which is completely fictional.
