You guys really outdid yourselves on the Aliens game. Great game mechanics and UI. You could've made it a railroad type experience but you did not and left a lot of player agency in it which gamers like myself greatly appreciate. My only advice is maybe for the publisher. I didn't even hear about the game until after it was released. Glad I found it on Steam during the Winter sale though. Looking forward to your future projects! Keep up the great work.

The game layoffs will likely affect games released 2-3 years from now imo. hopefully we still have a bunch of nice games for a while, this was a great year for gaming.
@kapitankapital6580
@kapitankapital6580 Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I agree. Games 2-3 years away will still be in relatively early development now and will be being worked on by core staff who probably aren't the ones getting laid off. It's normally in the last year or so that the number of people working on a game balloons which is what will be being impacted the most by these layoffs. Things like QA, bugfixing, details and extra features all of which impact the quality of the final product but which it can ship without. I'd expect the biggest impacts will be games released this year and next.
@nazgulsenpai
@nazgulsenpai Жыл бұрын
IMO all the layoffs will do is outsource those roles to cheaper markets like China, eastern Europe, etc. I think the worst outcome for western developers is the layoffs have very little impact on the finished product, and end up costing the company less as a result. In short, if it wasn't already canceled it will probably be "fine".

I'm very glad to see Jagged Alliance 3 and Octopath Traveller 2 in your list, because those are two genuinely great games that were severely overlooked in "end of year" lists. Octopath Traveller in particular was a highlight. Oh, and I don't know if remakes count, but Star Ocean: The Second Story R is also amazing, kind of borrowing the 2D/3D/HD visuals of Octopath Traveller 2 in a slightly different way. Anyway, definitely a great year for games. Thank you for all your hard work this year and cheers!

I hear what you're saying about the lack of a romance-able companion in RT but not every CRPG has to have one I guess. And, knowing the 40K universe, being able to romance a sister of battle would be weird - imagine trying to date a hyper-devout nun that actually KNEW that her God was real lol.

Actually in the lore they don't have to take any vows of chastity etc in fact there are examples of them being in romances. I think however you're correct in a way the bigger problem is she can't be corrupted etc

Great video, happy holidays! You say that you deduct points from Rogue Trader because you can't romance Argenta or have her succumb to the dark side, but that was exactly the same with Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous with Seelah. You couldn't romance her or make any lasting change to her character. I really don't know why Owlcat uses canonical characters anyway. I had a feeling that Argenta was a Warhammer lore character, but I've never been interested in Warhammer until now. It is really, really interesting stuff!

What a year!! I‘m glad to see Jagged Alliance 3 on this list. It‘s a really impressive conversion of a classic title into the modern world. You can really tell that the developers love the franchise and I‘m looking forward to new DLCs. Awesome game. Age of Wonders 4 is slowly getting there as well. The unique mixture of Civilization and Heroes of Might and Magic is basically made for me. I was skeptical at first but the updates and DLCs have been surprisingly good so far. Personally I enjoyed Pathfinder WOTR way more than BG3 which kinda leaves me a bit disappointed. Haven‘t played Rogue Trader yet.

Really good list. JA 3, Rogue Trader, Aliens and Octopath Traveler 2 are all fantastic games and would compete for GOTY in any other year but BG3 is just an all-time classic. Throw in Indie titles like Dave the Diver and it's just been a great gaming year. For the first time in many years I actually preordered 3 titles (Rogue Trader, BG3 and Cities Skylines 2) and wasn't disappointed by any of the 3. I think this was the year that kind of made up for the COVID years when releases were delayed or scaled back due to the pandemic.

JA3 really hit the sweet spot - it released slightly before BG3, just close enough to help get in the groove of turn-based tactical combat and to not overstay it's welcome. Without BG3 I might have played more JA3 and I would have seen through the paper-thin systems. This way though, it was the perfect appetizer for this year's main course.

To be fair, the amount of issues RT shipped with is inexcusable. That's Owlcat's 3rd CRPG, we really need to call them out on it now. @@mateussalvador2103Yes, but that's not an excuse for releasing your third game with the same problems as your first. It should be a worrying sign that Owlcat either doesn't learn from their mistakes, or won't respect their customers enough to tackle reported game breaking bugs before a release. Being an independent dev studio doesn't suddenly give you a pass for repeating the same mistakes over and over. Or at least it shouldn't. Especially when the asking price is on par with other games in the space.

I has the most unique gameplay for the genre, I love the class system, and I think the story and setting is probably my favorite in the genre outside of the Fromsoft games. It also is, bar none, by far the best co-op implementation in the genre. Despite loving Octopath 1, I haven't gotten around to Octopath 2. Might have to after seeing it in your #1 spot! I agree Rogue Trader got Executive Meddled and GW really doesn't understand the purpose of an actual RPG. That said, I still am thoroughly enjoying it. And I think the release patches sped up swarm combat considerably. Love both Aliens: Dark Descent (which I finally relented and picked up), and JA3. I'd reverse them, because I think you get a lot more from JA3 in terms of gameplay variety, catering to personal playstyles, and replayability. And yes, seeing JA3 get a free DLC that adds mid/late game content is great news.

I didn't finish Rogue Trader yet (I have over 60 hours now in it, but I have strong feelings that it's chomping at the heels of BG3. It's the second best thing I've played all year and that's saying something, because I love me some "old school" CRPG's and especially if it's made by Owlcat since Wrath of The Righteous was the best CRPG I've played the past few years. Lies of P for me also surprised me the most, because not only it's THE best soulslike ever made (imo), but also the best souls game that has a flawless Mouse and Keyboard support (i finished the game with M&K) and it kinda shits on every game from FromSoft in that regard (i'm not saying on quality hold your horses guys). Cyberpunk Phantom liberty is another expansion to a game I really enjoyed back in 2020 when it launched and they raised the bar yet again and came in with the one two punch with 2.0 release that pretty much redeemed the studio for a lot of people. The Expansion is incredible and it's on par with The Witcher 3's ones so I hope people will give it a shot. Street Fighter 6 is also another game where, although a noob in the FG's department, I've had a blast with playing online. I've mostly been following the pro CPT scene to spectate players better than me at the game rather than going through ranked myself but I managed to get to Platinum with majority of the cast and I stopped there (I got 100~ hours out of it). Diablo 4: here's where I'm gonna get some hate. I'm one of the few rare people that play the game for the lore / story so playing through every quest and side quest with a friend that is also into that was an amazing experience. The seasonal content, albeit lacking, kept be busy for 1-2 weeks until I finished the Battle pass and season's journey. That's enough for me to have some fun with the same friend and run some dungeons and mindlessly kill monsters. I will wait for your top 10 video and will post my own top, but until then these will have to do as some of my favorite games this year.

Octopath Traveler II had some of the best moments in a game this year for me. The ending of Agnea's story in particular was hilarious.

Been playing Rougetrader for 12 hours now. the writing is fantastic and I really like the gameplay. I just wish GW didn't gimp some of the characters and I wish the whole game was voiced It has the potential to be my favorite RPG of this year (even though BG3 is a 9/10 for me and my personal goty)

@@t.t6294 The only fully voice acted games that I know of are BG3, and both Divinity original sin, if there’s any more please do tell. So far the voice acting is the same as other Owlcat games. And the game really picks up the slack with very solid gameplay, great art direction, actual characters and a very good story so far.

I had heard about Octopath 2 and wanted to play it, but wasn't sure if I needed to play the first one. Unless it's a final fantasy situation where you don't need to do that? I dunno. But Lies of P was my favorite game of this year and it was the first game I ever got platinum on. I hadn't felt this invested into a game and connected to it since the original Demons Souls, which was a long time ago. I do plan on getting BG3, but man, it's such a titan of a game.

You don’t need to play the first game at all, there are some Easter eggs here and there of course but otherwise it is an entirely different continent and cast of characters.

Owlcat actually talked about the Argenta situation. They were told by Games Workshop (the Warhammer 40k IP holder) that they weren't allowed to corrupt her or make her romanceable. Which is a big shame, but also kinda out of their hands.

I was never interested in Warhammer - not my setting - but disappointing to hear it doesn't hit the highs of their previous games. Still, I'm definitely more interested to see Owlcat's next project. We live in a post Baldur's Gate 3 world and I really want to see how that affects CRPGs.

I just hope they don't take the wrong lessons from BG3's success. I can just see folks saying "BG3 has good graphics, bewbs, and continues on from an older series... Johnson! Get me the license to Metal Storm from the NES! We're gonna make it sexy and pretty, it'll be a license to print money, mwahahahahahaha!" (that is an evil laugh)

I’m glad it’s not just me that picked up on the weird romance restrictions in Rogue Trader. I started the game last night and was surprised that you could pick flirty dialogue options with Argenta even though I’d read she wasn’t a romance option. It feels like the restriction was brought in very late in development.

I genuinely didn't expect Aliens Dark Descent to be so good, I'm very glad we still see good games in Aliens universe. Very good year for RPG fans overall! Personally, even if I won't like anything that comes out in 2024, I'll still be happy to play games from 2023. But, there's Dragon's Dogma 2 coming out in 2024, surely they won't fail!

I spent the most time with Baldurs Gate 3 and TotK. Also enjoyed the two of them the most. AC Mirage was shockingly good, but the main was dull. Sea of Stars was great if a touch was too simplistic for my taste. Mario Wonder made me smile like a kid again. Top 5, I guess
