Hey there Jim! You are a true gardener with a sure love for all things plants, shrubs and trees....thanks for acknowledging those of us who live in a zone where everything is asleep for the winter.😔 Just love all the pretty flowers you get to enjoy! Thank you for sharing!🌺

I'm in 7a OK and have a row of 12 October Magic/Yuletide Camellias different colors and they are all in bloom currently. This is the 2nd winter in the ground. Last year they didnt bloom but I'm super happy with their performance this year! Someday I'll have a beautiful screen.

Perfect timing. My mom was just asking about what can possibly bloom in winter, here in Georgia zone 8. Needless to say, I forwarded this video to her to watch. You're great as always. Happy Holidays to you & your pooches!

Loquat tree is another really nice winter flowering plant for zones 8-10. You can smell a mature loquat tree blooming from a block away and the large evergreen leaves make it a nice ornamental tree even though they rarely produce fruit in zone 8 where I am.

You always talk about osmanthus... I ventured into a nursery that happened to be neighboring an auto body shop I was waiting on. It was 10 o'clock in the morning and there was this fragrance just filling the air so I tracked it as it got stronger- none other than osmanthus! Such a lovely fragrance!
@katiekane52473 жыл бұрын
Osmanthus & Daphne are about my favorite scents. There's a night blooming Jasmine in Florida that I overwintered for a few years that's even stronger scented & of course, orange blossoms. Reminds me of winter vacations to Florida as a kid.
@eleanorcapulong87813 жыл бұрын
I'm on the Ga/Fl border right by the coast. Confederate jasmine is evergreen for me and because we get plenty of rain, it's everblooming. It smells heavenly at all times.

I'm a recent Zone 4 (MN) refugee now in zone 8. I enjoy the spring (to me) color, but I'm not accustomed to seeing it this time of year. I was walking the dog yesterday and passed a both a forsythia and autumnalis cherry in flower. Behind them were some tall trees still holding onto their fall leaves. Autumn and spring are slow-motion, long-lasting seasons in the South. Two weeks of NearWinter. And that's just fine with me.

I grew up in N. Ohio & N. Illinois, moved to Georgia 38 years ago. Don't know how I survived up north. I love that we have 4 seasons here but NOT months of bleak cold. Only things I miss are dependable tulips & old fashioned Lilacs. When I first saw pansies planted in October, I couldn't believe it. I can have flowers 365 down here!

I also have a love for hellebores! The leaves are just so dang sturdy and deep green, and then you add in the blooms when nothing else is (in Ohio for me) they are just perfect. I have a large shade garden to fill with them once mine start reproducing more (I hope). I also love my pieris japonicas so much and I have added two so far around the edge of my woods. One was only $5 on clearance and it has made a remarkable comeback. So fun to watch them. Can't wait for the February blooms :)

I love hellebores I just wish they weren't so pricey! I noticed Logan's still has a nice selection so I might stop by there and pick up a few in the next few weeks. I also feel really fortunate to live in zone 7. We just have such a great variety available to grow here and I love that we really can plant year round within reason.
@eileenchang21733 жыл бұрын
Jennifer, you are fortunate to have the variety at this time of year. I am looking at the Christmas Eve snow fall we are getting and my hellebore will only bloom in March. It’s a really dull time of year for us up here in 🇨🇦. It is amazing how these plants can survive -20°C weather.

Merry Christmas Jim! Thanks for all the helpful information this year. Can't wait for more. My helebore are starting to set their buds. I only have three. Would love to have lots more. My camellia was beautiful until a really cold night got all of its blooms.
Great video and topic. I love any kind of winter color -- heck, even winter green. One you didn't mention is Sarcococca. Right now, my Sarcococca orientalis is blooming up here in Virginia. Seems a bit early for my zone 7a, but I'll take it. Great Genus. My deer don't bother it either.

Thank you Jim and Merry Christmas to you and your family! You gardeners have helped us through this year more than you"ll ever know and I appreciate it. I'm in 6b so I am hopeful when I see a Zone 6 in parentheses. Does this indicate a more hardy variety like you mentioned with the camellias or that it can survive in 6 but might not be evergreen? Thanks so much!
@Sunny141363 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the nice video, Jim. I also really like camelias and have several planted. An ongoing issue I've had is that the petals turn brown quickly. Have you found any way to prevent that from happening? Thank you. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Belated merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you! Can you try to help me understand how 7b/8 in NC is different than 7b/8 in the pacific northwest in regard to winter flowering plants. I figured you of all people would have some idea if it is the day length or day heat or just what. My Encore Azalea just isn't blooming and I don't know what I am doing wrong...there just must be a some difference, since it is the same zone.

@@rdarrett3635 Yes we have Anna Hummingbirds here year round. But I do feel bad for them in the winter when it gets really cold.
