Pretty right now in my garden: 10 "Berry Poppins" winterberry in a semi-circle with two "Donard Gold" Monterey Cypress and plain old green yucca between them. Such a nice color/texture display since the Cypresses have gotten big enough to show off. My "Brigadoon" Hypericum is still beautiful close to "Golden Dwarf" Hinoki Cypress. Two happy color accidents!

The witchhazels are getting ready to pop - a few catkins are beginning to unfurl... But by far the best things here - just after the snow - is the exfoliating bark of Acer griseum and Stewartia! The gold conifers are also all aglow here ... the stunning steel blue white firs...Leveraging bark, berries and conifers - that is what we are working on here in New England Zone 6A

The jade plants are putting on their big January show here in Southern California. A lot of succulents look alien when they bloom, but I love the fluffy, shell pink clouds of blooms on jade plants. Our sasanquas and japonicas are on the same schedule as yours this year, too (although this is pretty normal timing for us).

Here in my Zone 8b, Pacific northwest garden, my Edgeworthia is also fixing to bloom. In bloom now, the Mahonias, the Daphne bholua and Daphne 'Pink Princess', Jasminum nudiflorum, some little violets, Clematis cirhossa, Hamamelis, Lonicera purpusii, the Camellia sasanquas and Sarcococca ruscifolia because it gets big and I can cut branches to bring indoors to perfume my house. 💚

"Fixing to bloom", tells us you might just be from the South. Glad you emigrated to the Pacific Northwest. Btw, personally, I find the two most melodic Southern U.S. dialectical accents to be: Tennessee, then Kentucky, then North Carolina. So pretty.

We've had a pretty warm December and early January here in 6b/7a Hudson Valley. Had snow with a Nor'easter a couple of days ago followed by an intense warm tropical rain storm coming from the south (temps in the 50's) and a polar vortex is in the 10-day forecast, so the weather has been wild. I don't have anything much blooming, but the winterberry hollies, cornus sericea and various red, pink and orange bark Japanese maples looked lovely against the snow.

Most of my foundation garden plantings are "this looks pretty good here, lemme just stick this here." So, I end up transplanting often. I try not to really fret it. I appreciate the element of trial and error, and experimentation. But...i do have some anxiety over "is this too close to my foundation?" I know I will need to sit this winter and actually design my garden (with mature sizes in mind). Also, I am still so mad I did not buy some of the Carex Feather Falls when I saw them in store. They are just so pristine and elegant. *glares at my variegated lirope with rust"

I have a beautiful Japanese maple called Winter Red with bright red bark that I highly recommend for winter interest. Also, of all things, I have a gorgeous curry plant still growing strong in a beautiful silver color. The Dusty Miller is as white and strong as it's been all summer, and most of the heucheras are still showing their beautiful colors. My edgeworthia is on its second year, which I had to purchase after I saw yours and Brie's. They don't sell edgeworthia at all in my area, so it was quite the search to finally find it. I am so glad I got it, so thank you for the inspiration.

I have Edgeworthia on my wish list. Right now, I have a Shades of Pink Viburnum that looks amazing - the green foliage is sharp and its loaded with pink buds. For blooms, a newly planted Sparkling Burgundy Camellia Sasanqua decided to pop off after today's rain. For bark, the Paperbark Maple is the star. For interesting structure, the Red Dragon Contorted Filbert. And I have a grouping of Arizona Cypress that (Blue Ice and Carolina Sapphire) that are filling my heart. The winter garden has always been my starting point, and I am so happy with how it is shaping up!

Yes, Edgeworthia!! Stick with me please, I have a question at the end. I have a large ornamental garden in NW SC (new zone 8A) and Edgeworthia is probably my favorite plant. I planted it 11 years ago , haven't ever pruned it. At 10 years old, it started declining at the growing tips, but had plenty of root suckers down inside. I had to cut the thing to the ground and dig up and pot what suckers I couldn't keep in that spot. This winter the little root suckers are in their first threes with the flowers on them. So sweet!! I wonder how I could have pruned it all along to keep from having that decline and total cutback.
