Oh hey CPA candidates. Y’all know I love a good heart to heart, right? Well in today’s video I am dishing on how I repeatedly failed the CPA exam.
As you know the CPA exam is four parts so ideally, one should sit for the exam four times and be done. I sat a total of 12 times. Passed 6 (2 expired and needed to be retaken) and failed 6 times.
I’ve had nearly a year to reflect on what my biggest CPA preparation mistakes were and today I am sharing those.
I share this with the hope that more people will not waste the time that I wasted but also as an example of how important resilience is on this journey.

Staying at your parent's house with no bills and no work is always easy to pass anything. But the reverse is quite a different story. Thank you for your honest opinion, I took BEC and failed it, got extremely dishearted, and started to question my abilities. Still angry but hopeful that I will return to finish it.
@Chick-In-Of-TheSea

right? One video was "I passed 4 parts in 2 months." YEAH RIGHT! I'm trying to take my first one, BEC, and I am 3 months in. My software didn't want to mark a chapter completed if I didn't pass the sim and written communication in it. The SIMs were taking so long; sometimes I'd spend 2 hours on it; I'd screenshot everything (sometimes) and then work off of that so I could exceed the timer. I just want to LEARN it, then I can work on speed. Depsite this, I'd fail the SIM anyway. I got through all the modules with MCQ but maybe 9 SIMS are not attempted yet. I'm trying to go through the weak areas, looking for advice. A lot of the advice online is ignore SIMs, do MCQ. Other advice is SIMs are important. I sit down to study now and I don't know where to start. I revamped my study plan, I don't even know how many times. I need to find the magic plan where I can get things accomplished and move forward. I need to figure out how to make a daily checklist of things I need to work on; I just am not sure how to go about that. I even bought a second supplemental software.

I just graduated in May and I’m about to start studying for the exam, with FAR coming first. I’m going to be using Ninja CPA and they recommended the same thing you have: small bite-sized studying instead of marathons. I’m so glad I stumbled onto you! And, let me just say: There is absolutely no shame in taking as many times as you needed to pass the exam. This is not easy at all, but YOU DID IT! And best of all, you’re reaching back to help others. You go girl, out here doing the best work! I’m definitely a forever sub.❤️

I so enjoyed your video. And I am so proud of you because you DID NOT QUIT. My late husband use to say, "Anyone can quit." It takes a lot to get back up and dust yourself off and start again. And then to be able to realize the things you did wrong and the things you did right. A key point as you mentioned is UNDERSTANDING!! Proverbs 4:7 states get wisdom but above all get an understanding. As far as studying time, when your brain tells you that it cannot hold anymore at a certain point in your studying--that's when it's time to take a break. Otherwise you are fighting to stay focused and not learning anything. Once again I am so proud of you for not giving up!! Thank for sharing your journey. Be Blessed!

It inspiring to see someone admit they didn’t pass the first time or even the second. It a very difficult exam and the longer your out of school the more you forget. These days many work and go to school. They’re cash strapped when they get out of school making it hard to get a good review course. But there’s always deals and discounts on those review courses. My advice is to make sure you get a partner till you pass guarantee where yo have indefinite access at no cost for all electronic materials and the test bank.

Your point for studying to understand instead of studying to be competent in memorizing answers for certain questions is TOO TRUE! Our school system has taught us to approach tests like this for years and I’m sure many people approach trade education the same way they would approach conventional education when they’re night and day. Great content I’m looking forward to more! I’m about to buy study material for taking my EA exam specifically so which company’s study material would you recommend? I’m looking at Gleim rn.

These tips go for any exam, really. I studied for the EA exam (3-part), and had to go through some trial and error finding a groove for me. Just started with studying for the CMA exam. Some things I will definitely agree is breaking up studying throughout day and not do a long day of studying and to write out a schedule of the exam topics and write which you are going to work on per day, and not skip days, especially if you are breaking it up and for retention because lorrddyyy, that’s a struggle.

Angel, I understand how stressed you are now. I was in your situation before. Maybe you want to try a different study method? Or compare your study note with any of your friends who are studying for the exam to see what you are missing? Or maybe get another CPA exam study material? Or even contact the support team of the study material you are using now to see how you could use their material better?

Angel I understand. FAR is very difficult. It took me three attempts to pass it. If you are seeing progress that’s a great sign. I agree, you want to switch up your study methods and make sure you are really understanding the concepts. I made a CPA exam playlist and there are a few videos that will help you with preparation. Best of luck!

This was so helpful, thank you. It's nice to see someone being open about their failures and not just their successes. I'm currently working on my BA in English with a minor in Business Management. I'm taking accounting classes and I worked for almost 3 years as a clerk for an accounting firm. I am really considering pursuing this career path more seriously and getting my CPA license. What are some paths forward for me as a nontraditional accounting student? Should I try to get the required number of accounting credits at my local community college and then apply for the exam, or do you think it would be better in my case do go for an MAACT due to my undergrad major being in something other than business? (By 'better' I mean better for both my overall knowledge in the field AND my ability to get job offers.)

Thanks so much for watching! I would take as much of the community college route as possible but make sure the credits will be accepted for the CPA exam. I have a video that covers “should I get my MAcc” I don’t have a Masters and I never regretted it

I took AUD three times. I passed it in the last week of my 18 month window. I thought I had to retake FAR that I passed 1.5 year ago when I took AUD the third time. It was tough.

Oh nooooo my goal is to inspire you to do it not discourage you. It’s not impossible to complete under your circumstances-it’s just going to be hard. You just need a well thought out plan and should study outside of busy seasons. You’ll have to be extremely disciplined. Watch my other CPA videos for tips and how to prepare. Good luck 🤗

It doesn’t get easier so yo have to figure out how you can make it work and who can help with the kids when you need it. CPA firms will usually pay for a cpa review course or at least part of it. I’d say find a course with a partner till you pass feature. Usually you’ll have indefinite access to the electronic materials and the test bank with those. Then study in short consist increments and do more when you can. The key is working problems till you get it and having a few stream lined notes. Don’t schedule your exam till you’re confident you get it. You can also mob the sit date if you need to. There’s a small fee but it’s worth it. 1/2 an hour a couple of times a day adds up. You can do it.

I just started my CPA exam journey. I failed FAR and I just took AUD yesterday. The way I feel most productive when studying is to be task oriented instead of time oriented. All of my “tasks” were small. I kept it under an hour before I would take a break. I know for my FAR exam, I was NOT prepared. I didn’t understand ALL the concepts as much as I should have. My weak areas were VERY weak. I’m going to start restudying for FAR this week. I’m not super sure where to start. If you have any recommendations, let me know.
@TheAccountingStruggle
@TheAccountingStruggle 3 жыл бұрын
Focus on the areas where you are scoring less than 80%. Anything that you’re having trouble explaining in your own words or without referencing your notes needs more attention. FAR is tough but don’t get discouraged, it’s doable. Best of luck!

My response would be during your study prep, feel comfortable to select wrong answers to force yourself to read why your answer is wrong and why the correct answer is correct. At that point you will begin to understand the question much better and you'll be able to comprehend for yourself why you know the right answer is right. Also, always read the call of the question first and then look at all the answer choices to begin to get a feel for how to answer the question, and lastly read the question and as you're reading it, you will hopefully begin to develop a understanding on how to answer it. In a nutshell, start backwards... 1st read call of question, 2nd look at each answer choice, 3rd, read question from beginning to end.

Hello Courtney, I'm waiting for my approval to sit for the exam, and I won't start my job until August. So I have most of the Summer to study for the exam, probably beginning with FAR first, how many hours a day (Sun-Sat) should I study?
@TheAccountingStruggle
@TheAccountingStruggle 2 ай бұрын
I would recommend studying frequently throughout the day in multiple sessions as opposed to marathon study sessions. Study on your lunch breaks, in between chores, etc. so basically all day but with short breaks in between

Don’t waste time being depressed. Just adjust your plan, figure out what resources you need and keep moving towards your goal. I’m assuming you passed a section already so the clock is ticking. But you’re so close. Don’t wait to long to start studying. Make sure you’re working problems or reading flash cards in short stints in between your designated study times. Working problems constantly is key.

A 74 on the first try is very impressive for FAR. If you felt pretty good about the questions then I think you need a little more practice with the SIMS. Those SIMS are pretty rough-I remember that being the hardest part for me. You are so close, definitely can pass next time. Good luck

@@bonniebunny25 I said that because different states have different license requirements. I live in California and you only need a bachelors and if you take 30 units at a community college all you have to do is just take the exam and find a job or find a job and then taking the exams or you can do both and break it down into small chunks and then you get your license.
