The Accounting Struggle

3 жыл бұрын

Oh Heyyyyyyy! I missed y'all more than you know. Thank you so much for your patience while I was MIA. Whew, the burnout was real. Anyway I am back now and ready to catch up. First things first- I quit my full time job in accounting. I actually did it!
I had been in my role as an investment accountant working for a large insurance company for two years and while it was a fantastic job, I had to let it go. In today's video I will be sharing how I knew it was time to quit my job and what I did to prepare for my departure.
There were so many signs that reinforced my idea that I needed to quit my job and as time progressed I could no longer ignore them. I have held a job since I was about 15 years old and I have always appreciated the stability and predictability of having a job. In 2020 I had a major mindset shift. I decided that I wanted to work my job and not have my job work me. I recently started my own accounting practice and really loved the flexibility that having my own business afforded me. So I made a plan and quit my full time job so that I could focus on my business.
I hope this video brings someone clarity and provides insight into the process of quitting your day job. If a job is no longer serving you, please know that it is okay to walk away from it.

Hello, I’m sorry I’m a little confused, but what do you mean by Industry?
@TheAccountingStruggle
@TheAccountingStruggle 2 жыл бұрын
@@sowmindful1501 so industry just means you work in the accounting department for a particular company, like if you worked as an accountant for CocaCola that would be industry. When you work I’m public accounting you serve the public so it’s a variety of clients instead on just one.

@@TheAccountingStruggle Oh okay, thank you for clarifying! I’ve been looking into getting my BS in Accounting through ASU Online (I work at Starbucks and they pay for the tuition.) and I think Industry would be something I’d prefer over public. I’ve seen a few other videos on what it’s like to be an Accountant, and many say they have weekends off - start their days at about 8 or 9, and are off around 4:30 (Except for tax season of course.) but I’ve been with Starbucks for 8 years as a barista, and I’ve been looking for something that’ll still give me some work life balance, (I have a dog who’s my best friend, and I’d hate to leave him home alone for 10-14 hours a day.) and I’ve gotten down to either shooting for a degree in accounting, or going to a trade school, but I want to give Accounting a go, before doing something that’ll wear out my body faster. Thank you for the reply, it looks like I should steer clear of Public Accounting.

Reading this comment made me burst into tears. I've felt so alone after speaking up about how hard it was for me to deal with my first tax season. I had comments that agreed that it was indeed hard but that I was exaggerating on the effect it had on my physical and mental health. I am now on my second tax season, and I had a nervous breakdown because of the stress. I'm questioning my worth and it started making me heavily anxious every single morning. Industry is definitely a better choice, I hope I get the courage to quit and pursue that route for better work life balance. You made a great choice and I wish you all the success and happiness and peace of mind because no amount of sacrifice for your job will ever give back your mental and physical health 😊

I was in the same boat 11 years ago. I had a corporate job and my side business and I asked myself one day. "Self" "How do you expect to get 100% from your business and you're working it part-time ." from one [mentally] struggling accountant to another - i love how HONEST this video is! i'm currently stuck between the W2 and freelance jump, and after one terrible accounting experience to another, I'M EXHAUSTED. the constant hustle from one company to another, all with promises of grandeur that never deliver, however, it only looks bad on YOUR resume. i'm about to jump ship from my current employer and build my clientele, but admittedly the jump is scary, and i love listening to these stories from other fellow accountants that validate my experience (IT'S NOT JUST ME!!!). bravo to you girl! love this journey for you! and hopefully mine will culminate too! :)

This video is one year old and I’m finally at my end. I’m really considering my exit plan. I’m 32 and have been running my own tax office for 8 years. Tax season is always stressful to me especially dealing with the lower income clientele. With all my new procedures in place and new staff, I was expecting a smooth tax season but none the less, it’s still chaotic. Over the years I have tried different methods, plans and procedures and the “mess” of tax season is still a “stress”. It’s good money but no amount of money is worth my mental health. What’s a girl to do? 😩

The pandemic drove me to start my own CPA business as well. Your story is similar and inspirational. From the money you want to save and healthcare(still no idea of how to cover that), not feeling like your growing/challenging yourself. The more you stay into a role, the harder it becomes to take that leap and leave. Since im not married or have kids I think now is the best time. The worst-case scenario is if you don't like running a business and it doesn't work you can always go back from the networks you built and your experience. I plan on going completely in my business next year. Your video gives me the added inspiration. Thank you.

Awww this is so good to hear. Yes I absolutely think the best time to make the move is before you start a family because all your costs will go up from there and it’s always scarier. You can do this and like you said, the working field isn’t going anywhere, you can always go back

I agree that having a job is a blessing as you say but you know it's time to quite your job when you dread going to work, when you get anxiety on Sunday right before going in to work, when you can't see yourself with the company long term, when you don't have time to do what you want to do, when you have lost your sense of self to your job. given this new wfh environment, as a junior employee it's so hard to feel like I am growing, collaborating, excelling and doing things that are meaningful for me. i have been working for a year now, only black women in the organization -- like I feel like I suck at this (which makes sense bc it's my first time doing any of this), but I feel like I don't know if I don't know how to ask for support or if this is something I really want and should just quit and move back home and leave USA forever. I have a lot to think about, I like being comfortable but every day I have so much anxiety...

If I could chime in with any advice, as an Intermediate Accountant with 4 years of experience, I really think you should try to either work in the office 1-2 days a week to really try to get that person to person contact and collaboration. Much easier to gauge how much support you can receive! If it still doesn’t feel right, look for a new job! I’m from Vancouver however I recently quit my boring dead job and just joined an amazing public company at my current role. I swear there’s better out there! “the Great Resignation” - all the best! 🙏🏽

I think you should stay and push past the discomfort. The first couple of years are always like this, feeling like you failed at something. The struggle part is a great way to learn. I do agree with the other advice that you should try to get in the office if possible. It makes a huge difference when collaborating. I hope this helps

Senior accountant here , after 7 years it is time for me to move into entrepreneurship as well. The only person that knows is my other half. she supports me. Both my parents are accountants . This is going to break my parents hearts because our jobs are respectable and its the ultimate symbol of corporate tidiness. You look like the long lost sister of youtube Gugulethu Nyatsumba. Similar style, even. Look her up . I am pretty sure you'll feel related.

My life right now. I quit my job in 2021 and had already started my business September 2020. I also do taxes. But then I also picked up a public accounting contract with a firm so I’m doubling up on my own clients and the contract with the firm. My own clients- not making enough to replace my old income. I have a little experience of it but it does not really interest me anymore because it is so draining. I believe that there are other more opportunities in the future other than this course. I really want shift/switch my major because of this reason, although I am still contemplating my decisions. I strongly agree that accounting life is also not for me. Should I change pathways? I think Supervisors can intuitively sense when people have entrepreneurial aspirations or are cultivating independence in other ways by becoming debt free, building savings, consistent side hustles and developing an investment portfolio. Companies in various industries love desperate employees who are on precarious financial footing because the live in constant fear of being let go and set few, if any, professional boundaries. I cannot speak to your situation. But under the guise of goals is often a covert inquiry into why aren't you kissing our ass?
