The paladin who was convinced he was his own god (concept allowed by the DM), and the other PCs decided to be his followers. We never really found out if the other PCs followed because they were believers or wanted to see the eventual wreckage, but the bond was strong.

I *love* the idea of non-class "roles" to hand out with flavorful skills. It can be hard to choose those backstory abilities or gear when you could pick things you "know" will be more useful. As a player, I've even had GMs caution against it. But I think when you have, say, "Performance: Juggling" or "Knowledge: Ancient Sumeria", you'll try to work those into the game. You've got them afterall - might as well use them! And that makes your character more interesting and the game more fun.

Absolutely! I think it's okay for characters to have hobbies - we do, that's how there's a game 😂

Oh our players usually pick skills around the character concepts. And we end up a bunch of noobs, with a usually somewhat benevolent gamemaster... Bunch of noobs blundering their way through adventures is a lot of laughs... Also, in games like Fate, there's this concept that if your characters backstory makes something likely you can invoke it. With responsible players this makes for interesting games.. Have to fight that alley gang that's blocking your path? Get your cousin who is working for the guards, and his mates to try to arrest them all while you sneak past over the rooftops.

It wasn't very glamorous, but we were a 'rent a gang' group... It made for great episodic gaming.
