Thinking about your current campaign, one you're planning, or one you'd love to play in - what would be an epic ending? Or have you already had one?

A very important point many people in our hobby miss. With my long running campaign right now I wrote milestones into the story every few months. High notes on which to leave the campaign. And if me or my players will start to show a lack of enthusiasm I will take the next exit. During covid I had a long running Star Wars campaign. I ended it after a milestone. The players wanted more. They opposed the campaign ending. But I didn't waiver. But I started something new. And just a few weeks in 2/3 of the party had legit reasons to stop playing. And this made ending the long campaign where I ended it one of my best decisions I ever made as a game master.

I love short campaigns! And this video is perfectly timed for me. I've got two 10-shots on the go which wrap up in a couple of weeks. Both are already on course to go out on high notes, but the reminder to leave time for epilogues is a really important one. If my players spot this (and Salty Nick probably will!) I hope they start thinking about what their character's futures after the campaign might be. Maybe they'll be introduced and hinted at through roleplay during the remaining sessions!

Glad it was helpful, those sound ideal lengths too! This is the difference between "ends" and "has an ending", for me 👍🏼

The last long D&D campaign I played in ran for about three years. After about two years there was a climactic battle, we defeated the main villain and there was much rejoicing. Unfortunately, there were a couple of players whose backstories still hadn't been covered, and so we all agreed that the game should carry on so that they could have their character arcs. We were all still interested in the game and managed to make time for it so scheduling wasn't a major issue but the last year felt like a slog. In the end we were denied a more satisfying ending by a TPK but to me at least that came as something of a relief. As someone who has more ideas for characters than I will ever be able to play, I am fully convinced that shorter campaigns that run for six months to a year (assuming weekly sessions) are the way to go.

Ah, yeah - that sounds so familiar! I have opinions on backstories (as another video on this channel reveals). Glad to hear it stayed fun and that the ending that did come wasn't at the hands of Scheduling 👍🏼

I suffer so badly from the 'perpetual campaign', and i've been consciously curtailing and focussing things to make the campaigns better and stop them just sort of petering out.

Hello Mr Magician I like the Dm bits but maybe one day you will talk about your PC too. A character(s)you enjoyed, that you remember.

Actually that wasn't on my list and you're right - it should be! Thanks for watching and the suggestion, stick around and I'll make a video about that 👍🏼
