Thank you for such a personal story surrounding your review. It struck a chord & made me shed a tear, because my Father’s first proper film camera was also an Olympus OM-1. He got it when he took up Photography in an evening class at the local college over 40 years ago. The back room in our house was turned into a temporary darkroom, and he showed me how to make Black & White prints. His interest in photography waned, but it started in me a lifelong passion for both stills & filmmaking. He passed away in 2020, and I too was not able to say goodbye in person at the end, but I will always thank him for the gift of image making. Sadly I no longer have the OM-1 - perhaps one day I will get the new version, complete the circle - and be reminded of times past.

Condolences to you Jimmy. My father also passed away in Singapore in 2020 and I never had the chance to see him to say goodbye. I bought the original OM-1n in 1976 and still own it and in full working order!

I have my OM1 basically since its release, an mainly paired with my 150-400. There so many improvements that it is the WOW camera. For me it is of course the CAF and AI tracking with 1053 Cross Type AF Points. Besides the massive improvement in detail retaining at High ISO from 1600 onwards. With Topaz DeNoise you get now level of detail and cleanliness never seen before on a m4/3. Next are Menu and EVF as well as processing speed for anything like Live NDR, HDR, stacking etc. those are my top 5 but there are so so many more little details. However, with even all the awesomeness, there is still on thing the OM1 doesn’t top: Ergonomics. The EM1X is just on another level. That’s why I still have the EM1X and it is paired mainly with my 8-25. Dear OMDS, just give us the OM1X - please. That would be an absolute outdoor, wildlife, adventure, travel beast of a camera.

I see no advantage to purchasing a camera from a company which has only a tiny market share, and cannot possibly offer as much as nearly every other camera company in the world. Olympus cameras would need to have something very specific which I overwhelmingly preferred to the offerings from the competition before I would buy one. Otherwise, no sale. Very fine equipment, to be sure. But ... ?

I wonder what my granddad would think of me having been photographing since age 18. He bought an OM-10, once, and my dad bought a Nikkormat. Later my dad inherited that OM-10 and traded his Nikkormat in for a lens. He used it during the childhoods of me and my two siblings. Safe to say, using Olympus was always in my vains. My granddad passed away from cancer in 1995 at age 66. He was a major and radartechnician in the airforce, and only recently I learned he once was awarded the order of the Knight's-Cross, by her majesty queen Margrethe II of Denmark. An order which is always returned after the recipient has passed to the heavens and beyond. Now, my grandmother, his wife, is 90 and still has his uniform. It's been too long since I sometimes as a child was with my dad in his car, doing some errand, and he in the middle of everything, told me we gotta got to the churchyard first, laying some flowers at the grave of both my granddad, and my father's sister, who passed in 2000 at age 47, also claimed by cancer. I believe it's about time I look for ways of getting there, as it's my turn to pay my respects.

A lovely story Jimmy, your Dad had great tastes in cameras. It brought back very fond memories of my first "proper" camera my OM-1 which I bought in the mid 70's. It and the other OM cameras were great cameras and I went on to own OM-2 and OM4 ti cameras and quite a few Zuiko lenses. The only thing is that that video made me realise my age :). It's a sobering thought that I'm not far off of celebrating my fiftieth anniversary of my association with Olympus! :) Take care my friend, would love to be able to join you on the 10th but don't think that my legs would make it. What a nice biased review on OM-1! I totally agree with you as a fan boy! There was Olympus Pen EED with my family and all the photos in my early days were taken by it! Even though I didn't own Original OM-1, but I had OM-2N, and OM-10. So OM-1 is so special also for me!

What a beautiful tribute to your father. My father also passed away during the Covid lockdowns. Not from Covid but from cancer. And much like you, my father was also an inspiration in my photography journey. Although he started out with a Canon AE1 and my first digital SLR was a Canon EOS 300D. Great video with heart-touching tribute to your dad. Haha, my mother brought the OM-1 and OM-2 in Hong Kong and carried them to the US for me as graduation gifts in the same year (1972) as your dad. I was using the Olympus Pen-FT and RC at that time. Enjoy all your Olympus videos. I am still using the Olympus digital system, and occasionally take out my memorable OM-1 and OM-2 to just look through the bright beautiful viewfinder (as your father said) and click the shutters as a tribute to my mother.

I just watched this video and you brought me to tears! 😭. Like you, I learned about photography at a very young age from my father, although he took all my early childhood pictures with an old view camera! When I finished high school he got me my first film camera, a Pentax K series with a manual focus 50mm lens! I learned so much from that camera but fell away from it because film was such a pain. I got my first Olympus camera in 2018 (an E-M10) and my dad thought it was the coolest! He was impressed with how small and easy it was to use. And like you, I lost my dad to illness (many years of worsening heart disease). He just passed in February 2022 😞 I've done some of my very best photographic work this year, and always wish my dad was here to see it. Thank you for making this review, I really felt your love for your dad coming through and I feel you 100% my friend. I shoot a lot of professional work with Canon mirrorless and use my E-M5 Mk III for every other adventure. Especially after watching your videos, I think an OM-1 may join my family in 2023! Jimmy, this was beautiful and touching. My dad was also a photographer, and he instilled the love of the art and craft in me at a very young age. I developed my first film and made my first prints in his darkroom when I was eight, and the magic of that moment still lives in me to this day. Don't listen to RED35 or me. Go read what NASA said about Olympus when they had to use cameras for their outer space missions (At that time, Conquering Moon) and their other chosen choices were Hasselblad and Nikon but with a big BUT. Go read to figure out that and then you'll appreciate the value of Olympus throughout history.

A great tribute and a lovely documentary. I’ve just returned from a 5 week trip to north Pakistan. It has some of the most stunning scenery in the world. I took my OM1 Em1 Mk 2 with me and shot around 1700 shots under some very tough conditions of fine powder dust, freezing cold and heat. The camera performed flawlessly, and it was easy to keep clean. Needless to say, the images that resulted were excellent. I have a Nikon d850 which is a brilliant camera - probably one of the best made by Nikon, but as a travel and all round camera - the OM 1 is fantastic. Its light, so my ageing back is still intact and pain free! It’s light, fast and produces excellent results.

A great tribut to your father! I mainly use this camera for racing, aviation and pet photography. Om1 is the undisputed king in all these areas. I was so close to buying the z9, but the om1 saved all my m43 lenses. It still needs a few improvements and it will be perfect camera.

Great Video with great family history you have shown. And you have that happy vibrant face on again, good to see after all that gone down over the past couple of years. OM-1 for me is a magic wand, I still love my Em1 Mk iii but this Camera is a step up in relation to the Autofocus system, have just completed a school performance, a series of groups that do stage performances and get judged for style and expression ! it was under stage lights (no flash allowed ) with students manning the spotlights, the light was horrendous going from -2 stops to +2 stops, my ISO was up to 8000 at times, the OM-1 handled the performance well, just have 300 shot to go through now !! lol, Cheers and great to see the old Jimmy !

.. Your video made me think about the last time my family had a professionally done family photo and it's honestly been 10 years or so now, and I don't have regular photos with my dad. But outside of that, I think the OM-1 is a great camera but I still really love my E-M1II. It has taken splashes of rain, waterfalls, and cold without issues. I'm still not used to the Olympus user interface (prefer Panasonic), but it has been one of my best used purchases ever.

Lovely tribute to your father, he would be very proud. I know where your coming from with this video, I used the original OM-1 in the 1970’s and still have the camera, along with others. When I saw the launch I just had to get this and make my return to MFT, it seemed so right. It’s been a long wait but after 4 months I shall hopefully be picking up my new OM-1 the day after tomorrow. Keep up the good work.

You had me reaching for the tissues Jimmy, with your fabulous tribute. I'm sure your dad knew that the family photography bug was more than safe in your hands. My dad bought an OM-10 in the early 80s which he eventually passed on to me with the manual adaptor that I bought him one Christmas. There must be something about father-son-Olympus relationships, I guess that's also why I reached for the tissues? I still have it and an OM-4 and OM-2 SP in addition to my Zuiko lenses. I have this camera. It’s great for photos. The 10 bit video is beautiful. The autofocus in video needs serious work though. It’s worse than the EM1 series.

first, I love this video, you honored your father and your live for him in a truely warm kobels way. I hope he can see this fron where ever he is now. Now with respect to the video topic, not only the video AF needs a lot of work: menue settings for video are not well explained by OM; saving video settings in one of the custom modes is messy, still did not figure out if one can at all save Aperture mode in video to a custom mode or if it flips back to Programm mode as soon as you start the video. Rob Trek just made a video to explain more about this. This is a really good try to help OM users! Only, this should not be necessary if OM would have done a better job with the video settings and capabilities. Watching that video shows howe complicated OM made the video part. As well camera conspiracies made two videos about video of the OM 1. These are maybe not quite fair but I get some of his points. I hope, OM can fix a lot with software updates in the video section.

Great video Jimmy. I lost my dad tragically in 1982, and how I miss him! I still have an OM-4ti I bought in 1986. Currently, I have an OMD EM-1 Mark II and I ordered from Adorama the new OM-1, that I'm patiently waiting for. I had one briefly in my hands that I ordered on eBay that was practically unused, but I had to return it to the seller since the camera for some reason just shut down and would not turn back on. I got my full refund and decided to go with Adorama in NY. Let's see how long it will take to get it in my hands again.

I very rarely comment on KZbin videos, but I wanted to say that I enjoyed this a lot. So many camera "reviews" are just a listing of specs and features without a lot of context and everything is compared only against other cameras without a lot of opinion on how much the reviewer likes it. A "biased" review is great! I found the reasoning to be thoughtful and meaningful and conveyed well. I have a history with Olympus and bought the OM-1 a couple of months ago and have been having a ball with it. I can tell your father would be proud to see you paying homage to him and what he started all those years ago. Thank you for a great video, I enjoyed this a lot.

Sorry, but EVF is 5.76M dots not pixels and is good but not as good as it gets at modern mirrorless camera. There are several models with better one although this one seems to be good enough.

I bought the OM1 in the early seventies having used Practika and Pentacon previously. The OM1 was phenomenal and I was able to produce exceptional images with it. It wasn't long before work started to come in and I enjoyed many years of producing images with these cameras and never once did they fail.

I love how everything made full circle and how significant this was in your family. It's such a sweet story. This has to be one of my favourite perspectives on the OM-1 because of the personal touch instead of just going over the dry specs and stuff the body can do If I get an OM-1 I'll probably have to wait a while until one comes up used or refurbished for a good price. Hi Jimmy. Just eventually received my OM-1 and my 150-400mm + x1.25TC has been repaired and returned by OM Systems service - appears the faults were not due to me but inherent in the original lens. First time out with this combination has produced excellent photo results, so agree with you about the OM-1. Still improvement required on the video but better now than my EM1 m3 cameras. Hopefully see you on 10 July photowalk 😊 Peace.

Thank you very much for sharing this video! A great review that shows that technical specifications, while very important, are not everything that make a camera a great camera. The heritage does certainly play a role with this one. Incidentally I bought a used OM-1 film camera a few weeks ago, after my interest in photography had somewhat platoed, and the joy I get from that incredible piece of engineering has absolutely rekindled my love for taking pictures. Just wanted to share that with you, as Olympus has absolutely won a special place in my heart as well, albeit not through a personal history like for you. Anyways, please keep up the good work you do, your videos are always a joy to watch!

Thanks John. You are right, I used the early sample of OM-1 to film this, and the video AF was a bit here and there. But OM is aware of this and a firmware is being developed to fix this.

Great review. I got my first OM-1 in the late 1970s, and still use them today. I haven’t ordered one yet as I don’t have the cash at the moment, but I will get one sooner or later just to close the circle, as you say, and also because they are so lovely (I got to play with one at a pre-launch event. I wish I could say the same for myself. I witnessed my grandfather and father use Minolta Cameras. I further used the Minolta Glass with Sony A100. But after that, it has been downhill. They killed the Alpha mount completely.

Thanks for the excellent 'review' of the new OM-1, and your sweet tribute to your dad. It really touched my emotions, as my father was a professional photographer his entire career -- and a very good one too. As a young boy, I used to go with him occasionally on assignments, and sometimes got to hang out with him at the studio when shooting studio shots and working in the darkroom. The amazing thing is that I never took up photography until after he passed away in 1976. I became a professional around the late 80's and just recently retired. I have often fantasized about my dad being able to come back and see where modern camera technology has gone -- he would absolutely be amazed by my E-M1x, but he would be even more excited about the work I have produced. I believe that my father is in Heaven, so I imagine that he is saying, "Greg won't even believe what he's going to see when he gets here!" By the way, the other day I saw that Imaging Resource posted 'studio scene' test shots from the new Canon APS-C R7. Just out of curiosity, I did a side by side comparison of the same studio scene images taken with the OM-1. It my understanding that these are out of camera JPEG's shot at default settings. Believe it or not, the OM-1 looks better at every ISO up to (and including) ISO 12800! Anyone can go do the same thing, and form their own opinion, but I was thoroughly impressed with the image quality of the OM-1. Darn it! I love my E-M1x and don't need to spend another $2,200! 🙂

I really enjoyed this video, Jimmy, thanks for sharing your memories. One thing that jogged my memory was the small lever to the left of the lens as you look at the camera. I had similar of my Pentax MX, it functioned as a timer for delayed shutter release and if pressed towards the lens it stopped down the exposure for Depth of Field preview. Personally I found it much easier than the button next to the lens, I have mine set to Depth of Field and Peaking, but I’d much rather have the old OM1-style lever!

Great review and wonderful tribute to you dad, Jimmy. My father also got me interested in photography nearly 45 years ago. Back then, I opted for the Canon AE-1, but I had always admired the compactness and quality of the original OM-1. I am quite happy with my E-M5 Mk III, so I don't think I'm ready for the new OM-1 yet, but I continue to cheer it on. Are you excited about the rumoured EM-5 upgrade later this year?

Jimmy, what a lovely tribute to your father. I was especially touched by your story and your family photos. Thank you for this video. I started my photo journey in 1976 with the purchase of a wonderful OM-1. I still have that camera and a few years ago I had it modified to be able to use modern batteries for the meter and it works fantastic.

I have a practically new film OM-1. Indeed, the view through the viewfinder is expansive. I just wished the new OM-1 was a little cheaper as I find it hard to justify the upgrade currently.

That depends on what you shoot. I still have my 1X, it's a great camera, but if you are happy with it, you don't need to trade it.
