I enjoyed spending time with you, Jess. ❤️ If you’d like to spend a couple minutes with me… I was first introduced to your channel early 2021. Living in the city and half-hope for a small garden, I didn’t watch much homesteading KZbin stuff. In June, my husband mentioned looking for places with land (out of the blue! He started looking without my knowing because he could now work remotely from home). He spotted this particular one that sounded amazing. We prayed about it, scheduled to go see it after family vacation and nothing felt real about it yet. Just toying with the idea. While on vacation, I shattered my T11 vertebra. That gave me A LOT of time laying in bed to read blogs, articles and watch homesteading KZbin videos. I went back to the beginning of yours. I loved your cheap cattle panel trellises and goat content! Can you believe my husband and six kids prepped our house to sell, got it sold, packed it up and moved us 1,000 miles away without any physical help from me?! I still can’t believe it. Without God, it would have been impossible. That’s right, we still moved even though I broke my back. We moved to a world we had zero experience with in northwest Missouri. Only 1.5 years later, we have a bigger garden, we’ve raised and butchered meat chickens. We have put in fences, and had successful kidding of six doelings and now have a herd of our own goats and Kunekune pigs! This life still feels unreal. I still feel like we’re playing pretend. My husband BALED HAY last year! As for my back, I’m healed. I feel like the animals/garden/farm life was exactly what I needed to heal. No surgery, no cement, nothing but supplements, patience, respecting my body and faith in the Lord. I thank you for sharing your journey. I can’t say I’ve seen every video, you’re way too quick about posting them and with a “farm” of our own, I spend my time wisely on what we need at the moment. But I’m SO GRATEFUL for you in sharing your life. Those early videos of limited budget-homesteading are life changing. Your faithful attitude gives city folk courage. Thank you! May God bless you for all you do. ❤

I'm not a homesteader. I have a very small garden in my backyard. I put the broken egg under my tomato plants. I plant my lettuce and Kale in containers. Last year I planted beans for the first time. I'll be adding cucumbers this year. My soil is clay so I need to build it up with potting soil and other nutrients. I may need to put an egg under the other plants to see what happens!

I know all to well how that little kid feeling is. When Im in the garden I usually get rained on because I dont want to go in the house. Or Im in the greenhouse ( my sanctuary), then I have to run to the house or get in my workshop building to wait out the storm. Years ago , my Grandpa & I would set in the same building & talk & tell jokes till the storm went away. Such good memories ❤.

An oldie, but a goodie…Did the egg-in-the-hole for years ( before it caught on). Hard to do today if you must purchase them 😢. But, it certainly does great things for getting your baby plants going. I’ve always thought it has something to do with the albumen (or white) in the egg. It’s a water soluble protein that is rich in many nutrients (potassium, magnesium + others)…& the yolk contains different nutrients. I think it is true that the lowly chicken egg is a nearly perfect food…

I learned "egg in the hole" for tomato planting from one of your videos a while back, and my tomatoes have always flourished since then. One year I forgot to add egg to 2 tomatoes, and compared to the other 2 tomatoes growing in similar conditions, the non-egg vines didn't thrive. I decided to fix it. I dug a hole beside their roots, crushed an egg into it, and deeply watered. Within a week both vines took off! So even if you forget at first, you can still salvage the season. Lastly, I wanted to mention that I have told this method to everyone I know who gardens and they all swear by it, too!

Jess, I totally paused the video to stare at your pavilion and imagines it with tied back sheer mosquito netting at the posts and fairy lights running from the peak of the inside down to each of the corners and my heart actually fluttered. It’s going to be an amazing space regardless of how you decorate it. The guys that built and finished it are so talented!

The pavilion is gorgeous, but seems so exposed and like a magnet for all the bad things. Now I could totally get behind your idea, even here! Those sit out in the garden concepts just give me the dreads. Slow moving or staying still, in this garden, is a recipe for disaster. Netting would block yellow jackets, hornets, horse flies and everything! You really could eat or relax outside, without getting laid up with a swollen limbs. An actual place of refuge. Hm. Maybe one day!

Last year I had a single Tommy Toes cherry tomato plant. It was my first year gardening in containers on a tiny patio, so I didn't know what I was doing, and last year our temps were a sustained 100+ the whole season. 🔥Lemme tell you what, that kiddo went gangbusters and gave me a ton of 'maters, no cracking, no dropping blossoms, nothing. It is a GREAT variety for heat in my experience! Of course I saved seeds--we'll see what happens this year. I say puttering instead of piddling, but I immediately knew the technique you were talking about. It's the best!

LOL, I was so excited to try this after seeing you post it years ago. I put an egg under every single tomato plant. Planted 26 tomato plants. Was so proud of myself. Woke up bright and early the next morning. Excited to get out to the garden to check on my babies. Every single one was dug up, laying beside each hole. Some of them broken and destroyed. Turns out my chocolate lab (Hershey) loves eggs. I saved meny of the plants and bought a few replacements. I will try again in a few years.

I will be curious to see how well you like your tomatoes in the tall beds when they get further along and a ladder is needed for tying, pruning, pest picking, and harvesting. I did this with my first enclosed large garden and being a short person who is afraid of heights? I found that I had to enlist help from my husband a lot more often than I preferred.

Started two identical Spoon tomato plants last year, started at the same time, cared for the same way, etc. Forgot to put an egg in one of the holes when I transplanted. The eggless plant was about half the size of the egged one at the end of the season, right next to each other in identical soil. That was it for me, I’ll never not plant with an egg (unless I forget again 🙃).

Did the eggs in holes quite often back when I had chickens. Just tapped the top to crack the slightly, so the moisture lasted longer. Last year I accidentally tried something I intend to try on purpose this year. Had two beds of tomatoes and two of peppers. One bed each had volunteer/missed peanuts come up. Those peanuts filled in the ground under and around the two beds. Some of the tiny pepper plants struggled with that, but everything else did SO much better than the two beds without. It wasn't like those were bare spaces, I use basil and other herbs as ground cover. Kept marveling in the journal, and in photos about how little pest pressure, lack of disease creeping up, and how much more productive the beds were, with the peanuts. I wouldn't say it's a good way to grow peanuts, especially with peppers that are going to be in the bed months after the first frost. No clue what the harvest would have been because by the time the other plants were being pulled we were not up to digging for peanuts. (I was sick, spouse messed up back.) Needless to say those beds may explode with peanuts this year, if the squirrels didn't get them all in between the kales, onions and such plants filling out the beds, over winter. End of season, from September on, the tomatoes were horrible. In both beds. Looked suddenly suspiciously great, plants and fruits, tasted like BBQ sauce. So much so that I had a bad impression of my entire tomato year. So whatever that was all about the peanut understory bed didn't fair any better I think. Or the other bed contaminated every tomato haul, and mass cooking plans, which is also possible. Took re-reading the journal and looking at photos, plus garden journal mentions of food we made with flavorful tomatoes to convince myself they were those rich flavored tomatoes meant to be, earlier in the year. Highly recommend taking lots of pictures so that season ending yucks are not your lasting impression of the whole season for those type plants! 😂 Learned to do this many years ago, because my mom was the same way.

I got the same blackberry bushes last year. There were two in the package. 1 came back and has berries on it. One looked like it might not come back but I gave it some fertilizer and a couple weeks to try...and it's starting to give a few leaves. They are container bushes so it's pretty easy to attend to whatever they need. One year goes by fast and I'd imagine next year things will bush out and I'll have double or triple of this year's harvest. If I get a couple handful of berries and the promise of more in the future...it surely is worth a few dollars!

I've used fish, fish heads, a can of sardines and bananas before I haven't tried an egg yet. Lately I just water them in with a fish fertilizer and don't put anything in the hole with great results. I'm in Pennsylvania and I think we're in the tomato belt for tomato weather and growing success.

I think, your right about Pennsylvania being good for growing tomatoes. Same with New Jersey. Down in the Deep South, where I live, even though growing tomatoes is very common, the heat & humidity plus big temperature fluctuations weekly, cause inconsistencies in the quality of the fruit. Sometimes, depending on the breed of tomato, changing temperatures can cause the fruit to be over half core. It's hit or miss. Sometimes, we're lucky, and have perfect tomatoes. Most seasons, we have some good & some not so good. I imagine, that the temperature is more consistent during the growing season up in Pennsylvania.

I really appreciate you showing us how you're dealing with the stunted tomato seedlings, it's been really helpful for me personally. This is my first year as a home-owner and I'm starting my first garden, but my tomato and pepper seedlings have also been stunted in almost the exact same way as yours. Started giving them fertilizer and they started growing again immediately!

Happy Anniversary! I am the same when it is getting dark or the weather shifts. For rain storms I will sit on the covered porch and watch the storm for a while. I love the feel of the land when it is getting rain after a dry spell.

Love the idea of creating a space to enjoy in the garden and planting "snacky" plants close by. I had been thinking of moving a table and chairs plus a sitting bench back in the garden to have places to enjoy my coffee in the morning, as weather gets nicer. Yes, I am a boomer and had that, "oh, man" reaction this morning when I went out to the garden and saw heavy clouds rolling in.
