Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

Plant shopping with my 87 year old mom at green houses, I would randomly grab a leave of something, and say "Here, Smell This!" She said how do you know this stuff, you didn't learn it from me! She did not recognize a lot of them, but I do and love them, grow them and use them, and shared the joy with my Mom! LOL

Not only does Pineapple Sage grow quickly, and make a lovely summer tea, the hummingbirds ADORE it when it blooms! 💚 My one plant gave me more close encounters w/ my resident hummingbirds last summer than ANYTHING I've ever planted for them!! I just planted two more starts last night!

Camomile in Spanish is “Manzanilla” meaning “Little apple or tiny apple”. I’ve never really smelled fresh Chamomile, so I’m excited for mine to bloom this year to see if it smells like a “manzana”. 😊 Lovely walk with lovely ladies! 🙂

I hope it smells good to you like it does to Jess. I grew chamomile once and hated it. To me, it smelled like dust. Like stale dust from an old, abandoned house. I never could smell anything like apples at all. I was so disappointed because I guess I was 'in love' with the idea of growing my own chamomile for tea. Now I can't even drink it.

There is a guy in Canada that told a story of a guy who had Apple trees. One had a lot of aphids but none of the others did. He said every morning he would pee on that tree. Apparently too much nitrogen will draw the aphids. The guy told him 20 times in the year would be ok. But 365 way too much. I had milkweed that had aphids because I overly fertilized. I wish I remembered the name of the farmer because he was very informative.

Nice to meet Mikayla. The garden is so lovely, mine's just a little behind, seedlings just going in this week, though my overwintered onions, leeks and garlic look close to ready to pull. its very exciting for my second summer in this home. I have learned so much, I think of your video's often as much of what I've learned has been through your suggestions and my experimenting (which you also inspired). I am so grateful for life, gardens, great video's and friends I may never meet in person, but who enrich my life from afar. Thank you.

My grandpa always had a veggie garden but the row closest to his house was always sweet peas! It went across the whole back yard. I remember him asking to pick some because there were so many! It thrilled me because I was just a little girl who loved girly scents! I’m growing some this year for the first time! I’m thinking it would be a wonderful scent in home made shampoo’s and body washes….I may try this! I need to get something for them to climb! ❤

As someone who will mend their sorrows in alcohol... or any other negative connotation vice... planting, seeing progress, and caring for plants has changed my outlook on those vices. Call it needing to care for something.. call it understanding mature... call it higher being intervention or whatever you want... it has helped me in life. Now to deal with the poison hemlock near my garden that is thriving in the woods.

Makayla is a gem. Delightful to watch her experience your garden! 🥰 My spouse is enamored with Zucchini, your self appointed Garden Cat. Haven't had great luck with those black aphids. Both in them not eventually spreading, nor getting something to come clear them out. New to me as of about two years ago, and seem to be less tasty? I've even manually moved ladybug larvae to infested plants, and they are like nah, we want your better tasting, fewer, aphids...heading out. All my hundreds of milkweed assassin bugs just eat everything else. The black aphid attacked plants are usually territory of at least one assassin bug per plant. Always something else on their stabby end. Bit of a puzzle, those aphids. Previously left any aphids alone before, because I saw them as fast easy food for my other bugs, during lulls, but not these.
