My Trip to Block Island, RI

I flew a Cessna 150F to Block Island (KBID) in late September from Lawrence, MA KLWM. This is a slideshow of my trip with pictures and video. Check out the surf, it was amazing! This is a beautiful place and I highly recommend visiting here.

My trip to Block Island still haunts me to this day, It was Nov. 28th 1989 I departed Point Judith RI on the Block Island ferry in the early morning on a journey that was indecisive by the crew if it should be attempted. They gave it the green light and as we were cruising out of the marina I was on the bow with my coffee and doughnut watching a spectacular sunrise. There was a deckhand straightening lines and then he went inside, a few minuets later we passed the breakwater and a little spray came over the bow, I decided it was time to head inside. The entrance into the ferry spans port to starboard with no walkway on the sides with two large plate glass windows on both sides of the double doors that also have tall narrow windows in each. As I got close to the door a heavy spray hit me in the back and I could see two fellow passengers ready to open the doors for me but the problem was it had gotten locked when the deckhand went in! As one would unlock one lock the other would lock another, that's when the third spray/wave hit me in the back! As soon as I managed to get inside and give thanks a fellow sitting on a picnic table promptly launched his breakfast into a garbage can that prompted three guys to run for the two stalls in the bathroom. (Not sure how that turned out) The forty minuet crossing turned into an hour of see sawing diagonally across thirty foot waves with the bow crashing into the next causing a splendid wave to collide with the plate glass windows every thirty to forty five seconds. When we arrived at the island they shut the ferry down. I wish this was the worst part of my day but unfortunately not. I was sent over to run a bulldozer for the company I worked for on a dredging operation. At noon the foreman came over and asked me to drive him to the airport for a 1pm flight back to the mainland and informed me I had a 5pm flight booked where the ferry was not running. I dropped him off and went back to work till 4pm and headed back to the airport for my flight. When I arrived I was met by the foreman and was told the airport was fogged in and no planes were flying. But since I was there he asked at the counter if there was anyway I could get on his flight that way we could ride back to the shop in Ct together leaving an extra company vehicle at Westerly airport for other workers still on the island. The first flight was at 6pm and I boarded with the foreman, a little twin prop hopper. As we made it to the mainland we hit a strong headwind that took my breath away as we stopped in mid air and was looking down at the little diorama landscape below me. Before I could suck in many cubic feet of air the pilot who was directly diagonal to my left started maneuvers to combat the situation, full throttle, nose down, etc.. We landed safely and headed back to Ct. It wasn't till the next day I learned the next flight went down with no survivors! I know if it wasn't for the foreman requesting me to get on the first flight out I would of went down on that next flight, and as I am grateful for him doing that but I know I bumped someone else onto that doomed flight. news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1915&dat=19920305&id=SwQhAAAAIBAJ&sjid=oHUFAAAAIBAJ&pg=1257,760919&hl=en

Been here I think 4 times in my life. Just day trips with the wife. Awesome time ! I was looking for Mohegan Bluffs beach, because on the beach after you go down the long stairs, is a little makeshift beach shack. I haven't been there since 2003, but I do remember it was pretty cool to see ! People sign their names and leave little things there. Really awesome, try and see it if you go. You'll know it when you see it. Definitely going back this Summer !!!

Been there many times. Beautiful beaches. awesome food.took the ferry over. stacked rocks on the beaches. scooter all over the place. sunsets are like in the movies. Going again soon this year.

Enjoyed your production about Block Island. My family use to take the Ferry Boat there for vacation in the sixties.

Enjoyed watching your video again. Haven't been to Block Island in a real long time. Have been going on Cruises to other islands lately. Would like to return soon.
